Fries House Rental Photos and Description

House (Sleeps 6)

River Mist Retreat is a secluded river front vacation rental home located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Grayson County, Virginia. With 2,500 feet of river frontage and forty acres, it offers endless opportunities for relaxation. While sipping your morning coffee on the front deck, you can watch the mist rising off the river and spot a nesting eagle or a timid deer crossing through the yard. Many enjoyable hours can be spent canoeing, kayaking, or tubing in the river. The riverfront floating dock is ideal for launching canoes and kayaks. The game area, which includes a volleyball court, log play houses, and horse shoe pits, provides fun for all ages. Peaceful afternoons can be enjoyed lazing in the hammock listening to the gentle flow of the river and an evening campfire will be the perfect ending to each day.

Cozy enough for two, but large enough to sleep 7, this home has a master bedroom with a queen size bed, a second upstairs bedroom with a double bed, a cozy nook off of the living room with a queen size bed and a futon in the game room. The home features a well equipped kitchen, 2 full baths, a dining room with seating for 8, a living room, 2 televisions (with Netflix streaming), and a game room with a foosball table, books, and board games for your enjoyment. If you really need to stay connected to work, email, or just want to be able to surf the web, we offer wireless internet connection. Simply bring your laptop and connect.

About Shannon Payne

My husband and I both grew up in the wonderful small town of Fries. Although time and circumstance moved us away, we have always made sure to come home as often as possible to our beloved Blue Ridge Mountains.

Please call for additional information about River Mist Retreat.

Shannon Payne purchased this house in 2009

Why Shannon Payne chose Blue Ridge Highlands

We purchased River Mist Retreat from family in 2009 so that we would have a place of our own to entertain family and friends during our visits home. We have a special connection to this property as we shared many picnics here while we were dating.

What makes this house unique

The property is truly a relaxing retreat. It's secluded with enough amenities to keep you occupied (hammocks, a fire pit, horse shoes, volley ball, playhouses, the creek, and the river). The head of the New River Trail in downtown Fries is five minutes from our property. As an old railroad line, the terrain of the New River Trail is gently sloped without hills, making it perfect for visitors off all ages to hike, bike, and ride horseback. For adventure seekers, canoes, kayaks, tubes, and bikes can be rented from New River Outdoor Adventures. Several guests have enjoyed a four hour float from the public boat landing at Riverside on Route 94 back to River Mist Retreat.

We hope that our guests enjoy River Mist Retreat as much as we do and create memories to treasure!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Total relaxation (and a terrific bike ride)

  • 5 of 5

My wife & I had to leave our home for 5 days while our hardwood floors were refinished. Because we had to take our two dogs with us, a hotel was out of the question. Shannon accepted us with our Border Collie and Miniature Dachsund and we couldn't be more delighted. We enjoyed relaxing hours sitting by the New River just below the house, snoozing in the hammock, while our dogs played on the lawn or soaked up the sun. The house was spacious and very well equipped, and we took advantage of the BBQ on the deck and the horseshoe pit nearby. We also enjoyed lengthy bike rides on the nearby New River bike trail (57 miles, completely level -- just our speed). Shannon called twice just to make sure everything was in order (it was!). We definitely plan to return to River Mist Retreat next year!

Great place to enjoy the best of the region

  • 5 of 5

Shannon really wants you to enjoy your stay at River Mist Retreat, and that is apparent from the welcome phone call, gift of s'more ingredients that encourage you to use the fire pit, and the well-supplied and equipped house. The setting is magnificent and very private, yet very close to the town of Fries. There really was river mist our first morning we were there, providing some dramatic photo opportunities. We especially enjoyed relaxing in the hammocks. Our dog Ruby was in heaven, immediately jumping into the river for a swim upon our arrival and enjoying all kinds of interesting smells on the banks and in the woods.

My husband & I both loved River Mist! We got exactly what we were looking, quiet, fishing & a place to freely walk our dogs. We will be repeat guests. I highly recommend this location for those who are seeking a clean, safe retreat. When I walked in, the house felt homey, even including a photograph of the owners on the bedroom dresser. I felt like I was in a home, not a box-type rental house. The owner, Shannon, even called to make sure we arrived safely and even left us a welcome gift. And the place was absolutely spotless! I cannot handle bugs, and it seems obvious that the owners take the proper steps to ensure a pest-free environment. Additionally, the kitchen is well stocked, and linens and towels were abundantly available. You will not be disappointed during your stay at River Mist! Thank you, Shannon! Peace & Blessings

Perfect vacation spot!

  • 5 of 5

This was absolutely the best vacation my family has taken in a long time. The house was very well equipped. We were happy simply spending time by the campfire and fishing - no need to even leave the house. It was so peaceful and quiet and our dogs loved it as well. The owners let us know they were just a phone call away, should we need anything. We did attend the Hillsville Flea Market/Gun Show while we were there and it was quite an experience. The first day, we walked 6.92 miles checking out all the vendors. We would highly recommend River Mist Retreat as a vacation spot for both young and old.

Wonderful Retreat!

  • 5 of 5

My family spent a week at River Mist Retreat and we enjoyed it so much! Even though it rained quite a bit while we were there, we still had a great time. We swam, did some fishing and tubing, made s'mores and camp pies at the firepit, and just enjoyed our downtime from our busy lives in the Washington, DC area. We made a couple of trips into Galax to eat and go to the movies. There was a bowling alley we intended to try, but didn't make it. We found the house to be just as advertised. It's a very nice place with everything you'll need in the kitchen. Beds were comfortable. The master is very roomy with a great closet! We had no problems at all during our stay, but I reached out to Shannon once with a question, and she responded very quickly. We're planning to book again next year and will try some other adventures (zip lining, kayaking, etc). I highly recommend River Mist Retreat!

A wonderful place to visit

  • 5 of 5

My wife, son and I rented the home for 4 days last week and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We kayak fish and the home is located right on the New River with easy access to the water. We kayaked from the house and paddled a mile to the first set of rapids with no issues. The fishing was very good with several 15-17" smallmouth bass, one right off the dock on our last morning. The customer service by the owner was exceptional with great communication. The home offers much for relaxing on the river bank in chairs or a hammock. Also the home is very well equipped with all you need to cook or grill. Many outdoor options are nearby including the New River Trail which is beautiful. We have stayed in several places in the Blue Ridge but this one is a favorite. Will be back during football to see the Hokies!!
