The game area, which includes a volleyball court, log play houses, and horse shoe pits, provides fun for all ages. About Shannon Payne

My husband and I both grew up in the wonderful small town of Fries. Although time and circumstance moved us away, we have always made sure to come home as often as possible to our beloved Blue Ridge Mountains.

Shannon Payne purchased this house in 2009

Why Shannon Payne chose Fries

We purchased River Mist Retreat from family in 2009 so that we would have a place of our own to entertain family and friends during our visits home. We have a special connection to this property as we shared many picnics here while we were dating.

What makes this house unique

The property is truly a relaxing retreat. It's secluded with enough amenities to keep you occupied (hammocks, a fire pit, horse shoes, volley ball, playhouses, the creek, and the river). The head of the New River Trail in downtown Fries is five minutes from our property. As an old railroad line, the terrain of the New River Trail is gently sloped without hills, making it perfect for visitors off all ages to hike, bike, and ride horseback. For adventure seekers, canoes, kayaks, tubes, and bikes can be rented from New River Outdoor Adventures. Several guests have enjoyed a four hour float from the public boat landing at Riverside on Route 94 back to River Mist Retreat.

We hope that our guests enjoy River Mist Retreat as much as we do and create memories to treasure!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you very much for your special hospitality! We felt very welcome and enjoyed staying in your Misty River Retreat! Both of you are wonderful. Thanks.

Total relaxation (and a terrific bike ride)

  • 5 of 5

My wife & I had to leave our home for 5 days while our hardwood floors were refinished. Because we had to take our two dogs with us, a hotel was out of the question. Shannon accepted us with our Border Collie and Miniature Dachsund and we couldn't be more delighted. We enjoyed relaxing hours sitting by the New River just below the house, snoozing in the hammock, while our dogs played on the lawn or soaked up the sun. The house was spacious and very well equipped, and we took advantage of the BBQ on the deck and the horseshoe pit nearby. We also enjoyed lengthy bike rides on the nearby New River bike trail (57 miles, completely level -- just our speed). Shannon called twice just to make sure everything was in order (it was!). We definitely plan to return to River Mist Retreat next year!

Peaceful, relaxing, just beautiful!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful vacation at the The River Mist Retreat! We try to stay at a different mountain cabin every year...this is the only one we want to go back to now! The cabin had everything we needed and much more. It was very clean and well-maintained. We couldn't stop watching the river...and the nature all around. The weather was perfect, and the fishing was great. The kids loved the playhouses and playing badminton, volleyball, and fooseball. They loved watching the fireflies, chipmunks, and deer. Such a perfect place. Hoping to return very soon!

Perfect isolation with perks!

  • 5 of 5

It was truly a pleasure to stay at this wonderful home! With the river only steps away and the dock to fish off of it was perfect for us. It was very easy to launch and dock our kayak and a pleasure to smoore out in the evenings!

We played badminton till our arms and legs were tired then got in the creek to cool off.

The home itself was very clean and comfortable with everything needed to prepare wonderful meals to eat on the covered deck/ summer kitchen.

Would highly recommended to anyone!!

A beautiful location!

  • 5 of 5

We took a chance on trying a new place in a new location and it turned out to be the best place we have stayed in the last 12 years. The house is very cozy and and the views were wonderful. We celebrated our daughters 12th birthday here and it was perfect for her. We were able to fish and explore and do thinks she loves.

The house was very clean and well prepared for people coming who may have traveled light. Anything we needed was available.

I highly recommend this place. If you're looking for a place and you're stuck between trying to decide between this place or another. I would choose this place.

We will be coming back as soon as we can!

The owners of the place were very kind and genuine :)

Exactly What We Needed

  • 5 of 5

We are a family with 2 parents, a grandma, 2 kids (7&9), and 2 dogs who spent a week at the River Mist Retreat this summer. Shannon, the owner, takes great pride in making sure that her guests are well taken care of. Everything we could have possibly wanted was right here for us. The house was clean and comfortable with a quirky layout that added to the whimsy of our week. The property is tucked back into the trees and has so much to do it seemed like a different vacation spot everyday. We spent hours fishing on the river and hot afternoons playing in the shade of the stream. We were able to let the dogs run free and explore. Is was a peaceful, fun, and wonderful vacation. We had the best time and plan to return again next summer.
