Our family vacation was a complete success, mainly because the house, pool and owners were outstanding. We plan to vacation there many times in the future. Because we were able to get the large home, we were able to have our four grandchildren and one nephew stay there with my husband and myself. We never wanted to leave. The children had room to play inside and out and there was never an issue about the noise because we had this great private wonderland. Horses to feed and pet were one of the highlights for the kids. I would recommend this Home Away to anyone that loves the outdoors, privacy and room to play. The house itself was terrific for me, I loved the Victorian appeal, the large kitchen counter and cooking area made a quick job of preparing and serving meals. Our family says THANKS to the friendly owners and we hope to see you again very soon. Janice, Gil, Justin, Daryl, Dara, Sydney, Destiny, Cari, Jeffrey, Spencer and Wendi (our Pomeranian).

Lovely, Clean Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Outstanding house. VERY CLEAN. Backyard was very relaxing and right next to horses which the kids loved. Pool service came and did a pool cleaning.

Starbucks/Panara/Chili's/Grocery about a mile away.

Owners were wonderful to deal with via phone. We did not meet them in person. Lots of suggestions and advice about the area.

The house has a "cottage" feel even though it is large. Three separate sleeping areas so lots of privacy.

Wonderful Family Retreat

  • 4 of 5

Jan was a wonderful host, the houses had everything we needed. We rented the larger and smaller cottages, so we had the run of the entire place. My family loved it so much we are already planning to return next year. The only drawback was the outside area as the chairs, tables, barbecue grill all need to be replaced. I live in Florida so I know trying to maintain furniture in the hot Florida sun is difficult, but perhaps a different type of chair such as the ones without cushions would be a better choice. Power wash around the pool would also make the outside more inviting. Overall felt the landscape, the homes, the pool made for a great stay.

Owner's Response: What a remarkable sense of timing. Fred and I arrived a few hours after you all checked out to deliver new outside furniture, umbrellas and a barbecue grill that had been purchased several weeks ago to be installed during the first period this year where we could perform scheduled maintenance without interfering with our guests. We had blocked out this week for ourselves on the calendar of both homes some time ago. The pressure washing was completed two days ago, along with other routine projects that we tackle every spring and fall. We generally pressure wash in September, to prepare for our winter season after a long, wet summer. But because of the extended rains of Biblical proportions over the past several weeks, our housekeeper advised we should do it sooner rather than later. It was a pleasure to have your group stay with us and we look forward to your return next year. I only wish you had mentioned these issues when we spoke the day you departed, and you would have discovered that all of your recommendations were already in motion -- right down to the cushionless chairs. Great minds think alike! Best wishes, and thank you for your thoughtful remarks. Regards, Jan

Beautiful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

The house was spacious and very accommodating. Jan was a great hostess. The house was clean and perfect when we arrived. The only thing I would do is make the pool area screened in. I suggest this as the pool and area around the pool was very hard to keep clean cuz of the trees and dirt. The kids enjoyed the area and we all did not want to leave. We would visit this place again. Thank you for making our stay awesome.

Owner's Response: Springtime brings both unique beauty and challenges to Country Retreat, as the hawks, owls and other raptors who nest in our trademark grandfather oaks are fledging and beginning to fly -- as are the ropes of oak pollen that are abundant this time of year. There is something to be said, both pro and con, to the merits of a pool cage, which might keep some of the trees' bounty off of the deck and out of the pool. But it would then collect in great and inaccessible quantities on the roof of the cage. The structure, itself, would create a barrier to viewing and experiencing the nature and wildlife guests have come to enjoy. The open pool area creates more work for our dedicated caretakers at certain times of the year, but having an unobstructed and expansive view of oaks draped in Spanish moss against a cobalt sky is a trade-off we hope is worthwhile. Thank you for your kind remarks. We're happy you enjoyed your visit and would be delighted to host your family again. Jan

What a wonderful place to stay. A spacious house on a very nice piece of property. There are lots of nearby activities yet off the beaten path and very quiet.

Jan is also a wonderful host totally committed to her guests having the best experience possible. I highly recommend the Country Retreat and will certainly return when I am in the area again.
