Pam and I bought this property in 2000 after living on island 5 years and built Little Palm Villa in 2006. It is situated with big water views of Coral Bay and
receives nearly constant trade winds year around and even is blessed with the katabatic winds that stream down the hillside in the early evening.
Robert Redinger purchased this villa in 2006
Little Palm Villa was built as our personal residence and we have decided to share it with visitors to St John during the periods that we are off island with stateside family.
Our private fresh air shower is perfect for growing orchids and usually has one or more in bloom. For those not comfortable with a shower under the sky the Master bedroom has a lovely tiled and private shower in the mstr bdrm bathroom.
We stayed there this year for two weeks, beginning Feb. 13th, 20ll. WE LOVED IT THERE!! Pam and Bob are wonderful owners, and we felt very priviledged to stay in their home. The kitchen (newly built) is spectacular and very well stocked with dishes, pots, etc. The appliances, dish-washer, fridge, microwave and stove all worked well. The stove temperature dial is in celcius rather than the farenheight that our stoves at home have , but the conversion chart is on the side of the fridge. The burners are gas, with the coolest glass wind-shield we have ever seen! The tables, dining and patio are wonderful for seating at many locations. Living room has a
nice flat screen T V on cable -- gets all channels . The guest bedroom / office is off the kitchen, and has a comfortable queen size bed . The master bedroom on the lower level is huge, and exceedingly comfortable. Both full size baths are great, especially the upstairs one, which is full of live orchids and is screened to the outdoors, SO BEAUTIFUL AND SPECIAL. The best part of this home is the screened porch, which is enormous, with great views of Coral Bay harbor. It has a really cool telescope, two full patio tables which seat a total of 10, and really nice, comfortable outdoor furniture. The padded lounge, loveseat and chairs are wonderful. The living area has a full bar, with two refrigerators, one for wine. This small fridge is really cold, great for beer and soda. We found the Wi-Fi to work well and was hand y for us during our stay. Washer and dryer are conveniently located off the master suite. Steps down are screened in and easy to navigate. Trade wind breezes keep it comfortable, and are strong at times. The only down side was that the road up this year had major wash outs from the heavy rains in October. We were told repairs and some paving are planned for this summer .In the evenings we noticed no-seeums came out on a fairly regular basis. This is not unusual on the island of St. John, and we have seem them at other properties we have rented for the past 15 years. We certainly enjoyed our stay at Little Palm and someday would love to return there.
St. John is a unique place. We have visited--at last count--16 Caribbean islands. None compare to St. John. The fact that 2/3 of the island is National Park is the big draw. And Coral Bay, despite its remoteness, is the perfect locale. Coral Bay is its own community. We saw the same people at all the different places we visited, making the experience feel like "home". And when in Coral Bay you really don't need to go anywhere else. After arriving in Cruz Bay, we never went back there except to depart. Coral Bay is that complete.
Little Palm worked out great. It's a wonderful property. It is extremely well laid out, comfortable, and well equipped. And the views are spectacular. It is easily accessible to the many beautiful beaches of St. John (good idea to rent a Jeep). There are many great restaurants in Coral Bay, so you really don't need to venture anywhere else. Our favorite beach is Salt Pond Bay, where the snorkling is wonderful with turtles, squid, rays, and the entire spectrum of colorful fish.
One note about Little Palm is that it is owner-operated. This means that the owner is on-island. This became a key when we awoke one morning to no power. (It turned out to be an outage to the whole area, not just Little Palm, and it didn't last very long). We contacted the owner who dropped everything to delve into our problem. We were very appreciative of this, as you never know what to expect when something like this happens, so the fact that the owner was available to help deal with the problem was a great comfort.
St. John is truly paradise, and Little Palm is the perfect getaway. We WILL be back!
Terrible place. The screens have 3 foot holes in them so the place is full of bugs. The air conditioning does not do anything because there is no way to close the windows. There is an electrical problem so the ceiling fans in the living room do not work. We contacted the owner about fixing the fans and the holes in the screens during our stay he did not respond. We had to cut our stay short and move.
We have been to St. John on numerous occasions and have stayed in different rental properties, but we always come back to Little Palm. This hideaway never disappoint us. We love the openness of the rental. The cool breeze on the deck along with the beautiful view of Coral bay is perfect for an evening of relaxation. The location on Coral Bay offers us a more laid back pace than found on Cruz Bay. It has everything we need including a washer and dryer, internet (although we tend to shut that part of the world out while we are there!) and a television that never gets turned on:) There is an air conditioning unit in the bedroom, but we never seem to need it since the house is high enough to get a good breeze in the evening. We don't mind the beautiful 15 minute drive over to Cruz Bay for our groceries and if you are a runner, the workouts on Coral Bay don't have as many hills to climb! Because this Villa is on Coral Bay, it offers us access to some of the beaches that are not as populated by the Cruz Bay crowd and the hiking is beautiful on this side of the island. I would highly recommend a jeep to access the house. We usually rent ours on St. John.
My wife and I stayed 8 days here on our baby moon vacation and found the villa to be a great value. Kitchen is well appointed for cooking meals in, and we made several lizard friends there, just keep it cleaned up or the ants will flock! Washer and dryer were very handy too since we packed light. Access from Centerline road was doable in a Toyota Yaris by just maneuvering around the few high rocks in the access road. We arrived after dark and had no trouble finding it with the clear step by step directions provided.
The master bedroom did have a portable air conditioner in it but we found that it had little impact since the windows were only screened. That is the ONLY thing we would have changed, and I'm sure most of the year the temperature is perfect. We just happened to come at the hottest time of year. Even so, the breezes in the open floor plan of the main level were wonderful and kept the afternoon temps comfortable.
Wifi worked perfectly for when we needed to look up places to go. Coral Bay in my opinion is the best place to stay if you're planning to spend time exploring the island as you can easily go east, west, or south to most anywhere in <20 minutes. Some rental properties included kayaks and I wish Little Palms had as well but we made due by bringing our inflatable kayak so we could explore and snorkel around Henley Cay, Whistling Cay, Mermaids Chair, and get to the Caneel resort beaches without paying for a rental or admission fees.
I'd absolutely recommend the villa to my friends & family!
We found Little Palm Villa exactly what we needed. Plenty of well screened decks, great kitchen for cooking for entertaining several local friends and ideal dining area for catching the breeze in the evening. We were especially thankful for the laundry facilities because we packed very light. Our only morning debate was whether to have coffee in bed or on the deck.
The location of the house and view were great. We have been to the island many times so we opted to meet Buck, the manager, at Skinny Legs to escort us to the house. He met us with a friendly wave and led us to the property which is located about 5 minutes from downtown Coral Bay. Buck showed us the ins and outs of the property and was wonderfully friendly. The house fits a family of four comfortably. The house needs a little tender loving care to get it back in shape. Its screens are in bad need of replacement as there are large holes everywhere and in some places, they have hot glue gunned new pieces of screen over these holes. Some appliances, like the toaster oven, were not working and the gas stove had to be lit by lighter and was missing a knob. The office functioned as the second bedroom but its’ roof leaked and dripped down onto the bed each time it rained. The mattress was so soft that my two sons rolled to the center of the mattress. The master bed was fine. At night we often had unwanted critters (roaches) that would fly across the house. Because of the openness of the house the kitchen had small ants that came through the window screens and were ever present on the countertops. We have lived in Florida so we were well versed in how to store food so that the critters can’t get at it but this house put us to the test. The wireless internet was not functioning, some doors had peeling paint and the safe was rusted shut. The house was priced very reasonably which attracted us to it but in going to the island again, we would not consider staying in this unit.
