This large house, dating from 1850s but updated with a modern and architecturally compatible addition, is in the heart of one of Maine's most distinctive communities.
The large back porch (or front porch as they say in Maine) overlooks the harbor and is perfect to entertain and to watch sunsets and the busy activities along the historic waterfront. The house is fully equipped and well appointed throughout. The number of bedrooms and baths, and large deck make this ideal for family reunions or large gatherings. .
Castine is itself a great place to visit for its museums, historic houses, great views, fine food, and many amenities (golf, tennis, boating, hiking) but is also a great jumping off place for the Downeast Maine region from Belfast-Searsport to Ellworth-Bar Harbor-Acadia National Park, but without the crowds of its neighbors.

We stayed in this sprawling historic house as a party of four adults and four small children and it could not have been more perfect for our needs. If you have never yet been to Castine, you are in for a treat. This charming, historic village has so much to offer that you will not want to leave. Upon arriving, we immediately began making friends and had many more new ones by the end of the week. We felt very welcome!
The house, itself, provides that desirable quality that large families and groups of multiple families are always seeking: flexible sleeping arrangements and rooms that provide personal space. With a combination of queen, double, and twin rooms, we were able to find just the right place for everyone in our party. Additionally, there are three different places to stage a meal and two reasonably sized sitting rooms, plus a small office space, so we never felt like we were on top of one another. Even though our children were 2,3,4 and 5 years old, we were able to let them play freely in the kid-friendly backyard. The kids loved the house and keep asking when we're going back!
Best of all, this house could not have a more superb location. It's just a half block from the water, less than five minutes on foot to the dock, and has the most gorgeous views from the back deck. We spent many an hour enjoying them! If you are seeking a location with access to Acadia, Castine is a good jumping-off point. We made two trips to the park with the kids - no problem.
If you're looking for a house with space, flexibility, and a five star location, check this one out.
