Makamae House-Paradise on the Big Island

Bedrooms 3
Half Baths1
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Our house is relatively new-it was completed in July of 2004. It has excellent privacy and is near numerous things to do and places to see. The house is close to Volcano National Park. It is also very near an excellent snorkel area (less than ten miles). Other nearby attractions are a 'hot pond'-a swimming pool with warm water heated by a lava hot springs. Lava Tree Monument is very interesting and is immediately adjacent to Leilani Estates.

The house has a huge covered deck or lanai which is 10x40'. We eat all of our meals on the deck which has a very beautiful view over the back portion of our property. One additional feature of our house is that it has a master bedroom and master bath at each end of the house, which makes it very nice for two couples. Between the two ends of the house are a small bedroom with bunk beds, a 1/2 bath, the living room and kitchen/dining area.

the best house we have stayed in in Puna

  • 5 of 5

The best house; was private, secure, and oriented to catch the trade winds. the breeze would blow through the house, keeping it cool! Wonderful garden. well stocked home with lots of equipment for snorkeling, etc. We had a great time and would stay here again when we return!

Very nice for decent price

  • 4 of 5

The house was very nice. It was so neat to watch all the gekos. Was actually able to catch a few that got inside the house. We was NOT a fan of the gigantic cockroaches. Wish there would have been box fans because it was so warm during the 2 weeks we stayed.

Great Home & Good location to explore the surrounding sites

  • 5 of 5

Home is as pictured and owner, John, was great to work with. Responded quickly to e-mails and very helpful.

Home has 3 bdrm with 2 master suites. Each has a queen and it's own bathroom. The home is in Leilani Estates and you feel totally secluded with nothing but the surrounding bush/jungle around you. At night, you get to experience the sounds of the bush/jungle as you drift to sleep and prepare for your next day's adventure.

Within a short drive to fun places such as: Kapoho tide pools, Ahalanui warm pools, the quirky & interesting town of Pahoa plus Kalapana and the access to see the current lava flow.

W&D came in handy as nothing really dries quickly on the Puna side plus there was extra provided items that came in handy such as a cooler, beach chairs and a few water noodles.

Great place if you are looking to get away from it all and hear nothing but the sounds of nature around you but still be close enough to some local attractions.

Very spacious house, but very remote

  • 4 of 5

Our family of 4 stayed in a hotel room on Oahu and in Kona before arriving here. The space at the house was incredible. There are neighbors, but the lot is very large and secluded. My wife felt a little uneasy the first night (too many episodes of Criminal Mind), but she got used to it quickly. My daughter enjoyed looking at all the stars at night. All in all, a very pleasant stay. The house has everything you'd need. But the BBQ has seen better days.

Just a few words about the location. It's very remote. I'd recommend a GPS. It's about 15 min to the volcano viewing area (where you have to bike or hike 4 miles to see the lava hit the ocean). It's about 30+ min to Hilo - check out Zippy's for great malasadas. It's about 1 hour to the volcano park. No good beaches around. Almost all beaches are covered in lava rock which doesn't make the most pleasant experience. Water shoes are essential equipment.

One more thing, the internet is very fast, once I figured out the correct password.

Salt Lake

Lovely private home with great secluded property.

  • 5 of 5

Our family stayed here for six nights and we had a great time! The house was clean and bright with a beautiful surrounding yard. If we have the opportunity we would stay here again without hesitation.
