About Don Ayers

I am from the Show Me state originally and always longed for an outlet to the sea. I was until recently a licensed real estate broker in a ski area in California. My sport is sailing and I have sailed all over the world. When I first came to the Florida Keys in the early 1970's, I knew I would be back over and over again. The ambiance is unbeatable!

Wonderful vacation!

  • 5 of 5

The Osprey Nest is in a great location and has much to offer. We loved that it was within walking distance to many places, with the Islamorada Brewery right across the street! The marina was perfect for the 21 ft. boat we rented and the sunsets at the dock were gorgeous. I felt like we had our own aquarium at the dock. We saw stingrays, a shark, manatees, and very pretty fish. I even snorkeled there. The grill worked great on the beautiful patio. The bed in the bedroom was perfect and I had a great night's sleep every night. We met so many nice people who stayed in other rentals on the property and know we will keep in touch and hopefully stay there at the same time again. Don was very responsive to any questions we had. We will definitely stay at the Osprey Nest again!

More than ever expected!!

  • 5 of 5

My better 2/3 and me spent a week in The Osprey Nest, it was more than expected by far.. We normally rent a private home and were a bit worried about having others to share the property with since there are other units on the property, but the atmosphere was perfect and we made some great new friends during our stay. We hade one of the best trips ever in over 20+ years of vacationing in the Keys. The protected boat basin was perfect and we had no shortage of fighting 100+ pound tarpon off the jetty of the boat basin. A great location and perfect layout for a picture perfect getaway. We certainly will be back in the future and appreciate how helpful and easy Don was to work with and arrange our vacation!

As usual, an awesome experience!

  • 5 of 5

We had been renting the Osprey Nest for 5- 6 years, but haven't been back in 8 years.

Well, we just returned from "The Nest" and we are happy to say, it is more beautiful than ever before. Don certainly has invested a lot of time and money to beautify this gorgeous vacation retreat. The plantation shutters are gorgeous and allows for privacy, if you so desire. We were very lucky to have the greatest weather and were able to enjoy the deck just to sun and relax and enjoy our "beverages." The view is just magnificant. Just to sit down by the dock and watch the sunrise or sunset is a site to behold. Having the

beautiful marble sitting area out on the bay is breathtaking! What can we say - you can really see the effort made by Don to please his renters in every way. The bathrooms are spacious and clean and having a washer/dryer in the Nest is great! Don has made it a comfy/cozy enviorment for a couple, or for a family. We can't wait to go back and make

new memories next year. Privacy and safety of all renters are first and foremost in Don's mind and the security door locks really made us feel safe & secure. What can we say,

we hope everyone falls in love with the Osprey Nest as we have. Thanks Don - keep up the good work!

The rental is actually even nicer than the photos here show it!

We arrived to this very nice property after hurricane Sandy late at night after a long and frequently interrupted journey. With help of the exact description given beforehand we found the property without problems even at night. We had been advised in writing to strictly park our car only in the designated area for our apartment, but when we arrived, the parking was taken. Being hesitant if perhaps due to the storm the previous renters would not have been able to leave, we went up the stairs to check, but everything was dark – however there was a sound inside. So we tried the doors anyway – we had been advised to enter and instructions had mentioned the entrance being left open and the keys being inside. Well, both entrances where locked but by chance the owner had given us the key-code – just that the light was not sufficient to enter it, so that we had to go back to the car to look for a flashlight. Once inside, we fortunately found the apartment empty – but the fire alarm buzzing. Even that late at night, we called the owner and where advised to just disrupt the alarm.

Early next morning we had a rude awakening when very noisy demolition works on the property next door started at 07.30 AM – we would have preferred to know about them in advance, also that they went on for six days a week from 07.30 AM to 05.30 PM nearly without interruption, shaking the whole house (perhaps one of the reasons the fire-alarm went off). With only Sunday without demolition, we unfortunately had to stay away from the apartment for most of the time. I think whoever bought the property next door will construct a new house there, so the noise may go on for a while.

With daylight we found the beautiful terrace badly victimized by the storm, so after breakfast (regrettably indoor) we started to remove the fallen dry foliage and recollected the chairs blown over the whole terrace and cleaned them and the table. The stains from mildew remained however – a service team coming to remove them a couple days later removed the stains, but not the water they used to do so, so the stains started to form again after some days and the still water attracted breeding mosquitos – so that we had to have another go at the terrace to be able to use it.

The terrace is beautiful and extremely big – it will be difficult to find a comparable one! It would have been optimal if it could have been better used, but with just the base for the umbrella and no umbrellas available (apparently other guests lef

Owner's Response: Normally my guests arrive on Saturday and check-in during daytime hours. I have the maids clean just prior to a new guest's arrival. In this case, the guests came in late at night a day later than normal so the maid locked the doors. If the guest had touched one of the buttons on the digital door lock key pad they would have lit up for ease of use. I supply all guests the door code. Most do not even desire keys. It was a surprise to all of us owners of the property that a demolition permit was issued for removing the home next door (Oct 2012). A new home has since been constructed so it is assumed any noise will be limited to children enjoying their pool. I have a service which takes care of the property and power washes the deck when needed. Sometimes after a storm, like the hurricane mentioned, these service companies can be overwhelmed. I have not had other complaints and believe they do an excellent service for both me and my guests. As a retired real estate broker of 35 years in a ski resort, I understand the value of maintaining a rental property to a high standard and strive to do so on a consistent basis

Beautiful Setting for R&R

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I joined my cousin and her husband for a week at Osprey Nest. Our experience was wonderful! We had breakfast either at the waterfront or on the deck every morning and dinner at the deck every evening. We took full advantage of the charcoal grill; outdoor lighting was adequate for after sunset grilling and eating.

We were happy to join the neighbors who gathered at sunset each evening for drinks and snacks and conversation. We learned about the best places to eat and received lots of insider recommendations on what to do. Such a friendly place! We were delighted when a young manatee showed up to entertain us just at sunset.

Even in early February the water was warm enough for swimming. We also enjoyed ocean kayaking and found the rental company (within walking distance) most accommodating. We also enjoyed running across the highway to Debbiy Do's for wonderful homemade soups and sandwiches.

Osprey Nest was well appointed and comfortable. Although it was air conditioned, we opted to open the windows and use the ceiling fans. Since it is on the second floor, there was a wonderful ocean breeze keeping things stirred up most of the time.

The Murphy Bed was extremely comfortable and totally adequate for adult use. It was a little heavy and so we left it down most of the time. Except for make bathroom access a little tight, it wasn't a problem.

The kitchen had everything we needed except a cork screw ... and we bought and left one for the next visitors. The ice maker kept us well supplied, and the blender was great for creating icy beach drinks.

I was a little disappointed in the lack of good walking/bike riding paths. There were places to walk and ride, but not "pretty places" and walking along the highway wasn't at all pleasant. We walked five miles east one afternoon along the highway. The path ran out pretty quickly, and it turned into quite a hike!

I also wish there had been a bit more information available about local eateries and activities; however, the neighbors filled us in.

Don (the owner) was most helpful and accommodating. He was quick to respond and very helpful. I would not hesitate to highly recommend this place ... and I do hope we can return one day.
