A wonderful week in Oaxaca

  • 5 of 5

6 of us from all over the U.S. met for an unforgettable week in Oaxaca. I had been to Oaxaca before and wanted to share it with my friends. I found this amazing house online and it became for all of us a perfect island of peace and beauty in this wonderful city. After spending a day exploring the city or the neighboring villages, it was great to come back to this house to rest, relax and enjoy each other's company. The photos don't do justice to the spaciousness and the beauty of this house. It's very well maintained, with many plants and trees in the central courtyard, surrounded by comfortable parlors on the ground floor and spacious bedrooms on the second. The layout gives everyone as much privacy as we could want, with plenty of common space where we could gather and enjoy being together. The kitchen is a gem, very open and inviting, with everything we could want for preparing our own meals. (But almost always we went out to eat, because the food in Oaxaca is amazing!) The location is perfect, right in the heart of the historic district, within walking distance of everything, but very quiet and separate from the hustle and bustle. We reluctantly left at the end of the week, but were already planning our next trip and look forward to staying here again.

Sublime Sanctuary

  • 5 of 5

A mixed group (relatives, friends, couple, singles) of us spent a week here and it was fantastic! The house was so comfortable and pleasant to return to after exploring the area each day. We would go to the nearby mercado each morning for Oaxaca cheese, fresh fruits, and pastries to start our days. There are so many restaurants within walking distance. We hired tour guides for two of the days and would highly recommend both of them! Luis Ramirez took us to Monte Alban, El Tule, a mezcal producer (with lunch), and a fantastic weaver. Check him out at luisramireztours dot com. We also toured with Juan Montes-Lara (oaxacatourguide dot com) to black clay pottery and wood carvings. You can't go wrong with either of them! Both know the history of the area and were so happy to share their knowledge with us. Both also picked us up promptly at the appointed time and delivered us safely back. This house is on a busy street, but just pop through the door into the fabulous courtyard and tranquility awaits! None of us ever felt insecure in our travels, and we logged lots of foot miles. This is the perfect hub for touring the area. The kitchen provided everything we needed for our breakfasts and snacks. The restaurants were so fantastic, we ate dinner out every night! Arturo welcomed us to the home and was available to us if we needed him. You cannot go wrong with this rental unless you don't do stairs. The bedrooms are all upstairs, accessed by spiral staircases. We had no problems, but it could be difficult for travelers with young children or folks with disabilities.

Beautiful Hacienda Style House that takes advantage of outdoor living

  • 5 of 5

This house is in an excellent location for exploring the historic heart of Oaxaca. You step into the door off a busy street, and are met with a tranquil interior courtyard, beautifully landscaped and full of wonderful "outdoor living" opportunities. The kitchen is gorgeous and well-stocked and is separate from the rest of the house. Two bathrooms are also in a separate building in the courtyard. So, wherever you go in the home, you travel through the beautiful courtyard. The house was clean, nicely decorated and was perfect for our group of 8 couples traveling together for Dia de los Muertos. The caretaker, Arturo was gracious, kind and very helpful. The owner is also very responsive. I agree with previous reviewers that the 4 spiral staircases that lead to each separate bedroom can be challenging, and with no handrails, can be a bit intimidating. Trips down the stairs to the bathroom in the middle of the night certainly presented some challenges and concerns that people would fall. Renters should just keep this in mind for people with stability issues or other physical challenges. We also experienced a few nights of very loud music from the nearby "mixology and social club." We believe the events to be related to Dia de los Muertos, so the noise is probably not a factor most of the time. I don't think you can find a better location though, and the house is truly beautiful, lovely, clean and inviting. You are just a few blocks from Santo Domingo and some great restaurants (we liked Pitiona, Zandunga, La Biznaga). We also loved Catedral (amazing meal!). I would highly recommend this house to other travelers. It is a great way to experience Oaxaca.

Beautiful, generous home in the historic center

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Cinthia's beautiful home for 2 weeks and it was nothing short of luxurious. Her caretaker, Arturo was wonderful and extremely helpful and Elena, the house cook taught us how to make tradition Oaxacan dishes such as posole, memelas and green mole. The location was right beside the local market, which we visited every day and the kitchen was fully outfitted, allowing us to cook all kinds of wonderful foods. The plant life in the home is truly spectacular and every room is authentically and tastefully decorated. Each room is quite private and the bathrooms are very clean and lovely. I can't think of a more delightful place to come home to in the city.

great location, good condition, weird layout

  • 4 of 5

First off this property has a great location, It is within walking distance of the great restaurants, the zocalo, botanical gardens. The interior court yard is very tranquil and inviting, the kitchen is modern and well equipped, the representative, Arturo, couldn't be more accommodating. However this is a remodeled property and the layout is a bit strange. All the bedrooms are on the second floor accessed by narrow spiral staircases. One Bath is located inside, the other two outside across the courtyard. I would not recommend this property to handicapped or physically impaired people.

Comfortable, Accessible, Enjoyable Holiday Home

  • 5 of 5

All seven of us travelers enjoyed our stay in Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico during the Day of the Dead Celebrations, and more so than we had expected! Even my wife Cori and I who had previously spent a week in the house on Tinoco Y Palacios, enjoyed this holiday more than previously.

Sure, the Day of the Dead celebrations throughout the area played a large role, but the foundation of our visit was this comfortable, accessible and enjoyable home, and, in addition to this residence, the tour and activity recommendations received from the owner were absolutely great.

The house is well situated for easy walking to any place in central Oaxaca, it is a comfortable place just to lounge around, and the kitchen is great being in that it is not an integral part of house, but a great place separate from the rest of the place for coffee and breakfast in the morning, cocktails in the evening.

From the recommendations, three of us, and one a chef from the New Orleans School of Cooking attended Nora Andrea Valencia’s (www.almademitierra.net) cooking class. As it turned out, I attended her class during my last visit. Nora received very high marks from all of us, and particularly the chef!

From another recommendation, we all engaged Juan Montes-Lara (www.oaxacatourguide.com) as our guide for three days’ of touring the area. Very well educated, highly experienced, very personable, always flexible, and presents himself and the information as a professional. As it turns out, one of our guests is a licensed tour guide/tour guide trainer from New Orleans and had nothing but praise for Juan’s performance as our cultural, educational, and historical instructor.

The owner's representative on the ground in Oaxaca, Arturo, performs a great service. Personable, responsive, and engaging. Arturo will address any needs regarding the house.

Cori and I are already planning to return to Tinoco Y Palacios during fall 2017 to mark her 50th birthday!
