Seasonal Activities: During summer you will enjoy the property's views, decks and meadow. There are lots of fun family activities to enjoy in the area - from antique fairs to outdoor concerts, farmers markets to dinner cruises, amusement parks to sandy beaches - there is plenty to do in this pristine area of New England.
The winter will provide plenty of opportunity for all winter sports. There are gentle trails adjacent to the property and a challenging family mountain just 5 minutes away plus countless other mountains nearby. One of our favorite family activities is night tubing at Pats Peak. Nearby Sunapee is a super family mountain with a great kids' ski program.
Autumn, of course, brings us some of the most beautiful scenery in the states. New England foliage in October is a must-see. We suggest riding the quad up Mount Sunapee and taking in a spectacular display of color and beauty. From there you can hike to peaceful Lake Solitude. New this summer, 2012, Sunapee has opened an exciting adventure park with zip lines, ropes course and Segway tours. Call ahead for reservations - they book quickly! 603.763.3500.
History Buffs: This stone barn sits on property originally owned by John Hay. Hay was Abraham Lincoln's personal secretary and Secretary of State under Teddy Roosevelt. In the early 1900's Sunapee was a bustling vacation destination and Mr. Hay built a gorgeous home here, complete with spectacular gardens and stunning views. His son took over the property and in 1910 built a gentleman's barn made of stone, which housed sheep, cows and goats. We purchased the property in 2003 and turned this beloved (but unused) barn into a retreat. The remnants of another old barn's stone foundation is now a large sunken courtyard surrounded by birch trees... perfect for playing croquet, snoozing in the hammock, or enjoying a picnic. The kids love to pick flowers in the meadow, swing on the zip line, climb huge boulders, make forts along the stone walls, build fairy houses in the woods, search for wildlife - and we have plenty! Black bears, fox, porcupines, a fisher cat, turkeys, deer and a ground hog!
The Latest Updates: Sunapee View Bed & Breakfast is accepting bookings! Just next door to the stone barn is the home formerly occupied by the caretaker of The Hay Estate. This lovely spot has been nursed back to life by my parents, George and Linda West who are enjoying their retirement in great style up on Mount Sunapee. The Pacific Northwest style home is now a modern B&B with spectacular views. This is not your typical chintz-covered Vicotrian inn. Expect bright colors and modern styling. Enjoy breakfast by a cozy fire while watching the morning skiers shoosh down the slopes. Or, in the summer, lounge on the patio under a shady beech tree overlooking the apple orchard. My Mom is a gourmet cook who is famous for her pies, sauces, hearty stews and casseroles made from fruits and veggies grown in her backyard gardens. George is a born entertainer - full of jokes and beautiful songs. He is a Doo-Wap singer and performs a fantastic version of 'Still of the Night'.
VIP, linens are the responsibility of the guests.
Family of 6, completely in L.O.V.E. with the stone barn in Sunapee. You'll see why when you visit. It's AMAZING.
Vanessa purchased this house in 2003
It allows us to have our extended family up for Thanksgiving and other special events. Everyone gets a bed and there is plenty of room for card games and other activities for adults and children.
The energy is extraordinary. The stone barn and neighboring John Hay Estate have so much history. The area is incredible. The nature is spectacular. It'll be a vacation you'll always remember in a truly unique and elegant home.
The Stone Barn, the Milk House, and George and Linda West’s Bed and Breakfast next door provided a nearly perfect setting for our family’s first reunion. We were there the week of July 11, 2015 – the 100th anniversary of our mother’s birth. There were 25 of us ranging in age from seventy-four to four; we went our separate ways during the day and gathered for big big suppers every evening. What a beautiful space for us all, and what amazing wonderful hosts George and Linda were for the four of us lucky enough to be in the B and B. (The people in the Stone Barn got Linda’s yummy muffin leftovers from our breakfast, if they got up early enough.) The whole week was such fun that the next generation down from the Old Ones are already planning a second reunion. Our Mom would be so proud.
(The only blip on this experience was a mysterious stain that appeared on a stair step: we don’t know whether it was there before we arrived or not. So a walk-through with someone representing the owners before settling in would be good.)
We had such a fantastic time at Well Sweep. The house is gorgeous and welcomes crowds with grace and ease with an open floor plan. When there were slight glitches (pizza oven and water filter) they were dealt with immediately. The Sunapee Inn next door is also a gem. We loved staying there too. Linda and George (Inn owners) treated us like family. The rooms are beautifully appointed (great color schemes) and the breakfasts were scrumptious. My family had an unforgetable 10 days at both places. Can't wait to visit again. Thank you.
One of the loveliest vacation homes I could ever imagine. We rented it out for a family reunion and every man, woman and child loved their stay. Plenty of well kept accommodations with nicely appointed touches in every room. A huge open living space upstairs that includes the kitchen, dining room, living room, and play area allowing large numbers to congregate comfortably together. Gorgeous master suites. One can tell when you arrive that it is not only a rental but a home. There is a large family/game room downstairs that's fun to spend time in, too. It's minutes from Lake Sunapee and amazing views. Don't pass this one up! Hopefully, we'll be going back again next year.
Just as lovely is the beautifully managed B&B located just next door, Sunapee View B&B, in case you should have family overflow. Linda (the rental owner's mother) and her husband George have done wonders in renovating an old farm house into a charming, hospitable and relaxing inn. Everything has been chosen with an eye toward beauty and pampered indulgence. Linda is an excellent cook and the hearty breakfasts were beautifully presented and tasted out of this world. Can you tell we had a good time? Okay, 'nuf said. Do some research and go!
The Barn is a very nice house with a tremendous amount of space. I stayed there twice this year for two separate business retreats. While we enjoyed the facilities very much, our security deposit was withheld BOTH times. The first time (October 2009) the owners stated we scratched the floors. The second time (May 2010) our deposit was withheld because she said we allowed "bugs and critters" to enter the house after we vacated.
On both occasions we treated the house with great respects. These were business meeting with no kids.
Neither time did she call or email to discuss before holding back the money.
In the context of the overall cost of renting this home, losing all or part of the security deposit is not a major financial hit, but it is a petty annoyance that just leaves a bad taste in one's mouth (twice!).
We had an amazing stay last year during President's week at this incredible retreat. Our group included two families with six children, ages 2 months to 7 years - there was plenty of space for both families on the two levels and many activities for the kids - both indoors and outside. This home is exquisitely appointed with an incredible kitchen, guest rooms and bathrooms. The bunk rooms was a particularly special treat for the kids! We loved sitting by the enormous fireplace in the evenings after a day of skiing and ice skating. The owner provided an extensive list of things to do in the surrounding area. It was a week to remember!
Amazing stay! Great location- close to the mountains and the lake. Our whole family was able to comfortably enjoy a family reunion. The kids really liked staying together in the bunk rooms. Especially loved the pizza oven in the kitchen!
To answer the questions, the listing was accurate, it was really clean with almost new furniture and household items, dealing with the owner was easy and effortless (answered ALL of our many questions) and I would definitely recommend the barn to my friends (family already enjoyed!).
This historic and luxuriously renovated stone barn is located minutes from Mount Sunapee's base lodge and the State Beach Lake Sunapee. Our property is adjacent to hundreds of acres of conservation land, hiking trails and The Fells' historic gardens and museum.
Skiers have several mountains to choose from - Okemo, Ragged, Pat's Peak, Stowe, Mad River are all between 20 and 90 minutes away. Gorgeous X-C ski trails abound. Free ice skating.
Summer and autumn visitors will enjoy kayaking on any of Sunapee Region's stunning lakes, hiking countless hilly trails, viewing breathtaking vistas and vibrant foliage, swimming in a pristine lake with sandy beaches. Visit New London's quaint and stylish town center, take in an off-Broadway show at the Barn Playhouse, dine at one of the area's many restaurants, explore the abundant craft fairs and farms that are open to the public. This is classic New England living at its finest.
Other Activities: We will forward you an extensive and detailed list of activities in the area. Not enough space on this page!
Ski: Just 5 minutes away, Mount Sunapee is an ideal family mountain with an excellent ski school. Located nearby are several other mountains including Ragged, Kearsarge, Pat's Peak, Okemo, Mad River, Whaleback, Stowe, and the list goes on. There are also several cross-country ski courses nearby. At the house we have X-C skis and snow shoes that you are welcome to use. There are great trails you can explore adjacent to our property.
The mountain is slated to open Thanksgiving weekend. If they get snow early, they will open early.
