About William

One of our other passions is music. I was involved with the Guardsmen Drum and Bugle Corps for 26 years, as a marching member for 10 years and 16 as a choreographer and director. My whole family was involved in one way or another. My sister Celeste and Paul were members while sisters Claudia and Regina, followed and helped with management. My father was very active as director and my mother sewed flags and followed us every where. In 2015 I had the honor to be inducted in to the Drum Corps International Hall of Fame.

My son has followed in music and was a member of the Green Thunder Percussion Ensemble and has been taking piano lessons for 15 years.

I am currently president of Ray's Hvac, a heating and air conditioning company that my father Ray started in 1956. My mother and brother Paul work for the company as well.

My son and I have 3 dogs: Minnie Pearl, a Jack Russell/Pomeranian, Magnolia, a Fox Terrier, and Mr. Conrad, a Border Collie. Both Minnie Pearl and Mr. Conrad were rescued from visits to Ireland.

We are involved along with my sister Claudia with Young at Hearts, a senior pet rescue and adoption organization. My son also volunteers at the Animal Care League of Oak Park.

My son and I are parishioners at St. John the Baptist in Winfield, and I am also a member of the Human Rights Campaign.

We starting doing vacation rentals in 2001 with our thatched cottage in County Kerry, Ireland. Cottage Mary Rose is named after my mother. She went with me on my first trip there and has been back many times.

- William Harty,

The Davis House,

William purchased this house in 1999

Why William chose Glen Ellyn

Our last old treasure is the Davis House in Glen Ellyn, Il. It is a 1892 historical land mark. I fell in love with Glen Ellyn as a young man working for the family business. I would come down Main Street to make pick ups from some of our vendors.

When I first saw the Davis House, I knew this home was a diamond in the rough. The house built in 1892 originally owned all of the surrounding land...consisting of around 8 acres. Originally built by a German family, it is considered a Gambrel style home. We found German Chicago newspapers in a wall in the basement.

The Davis family from England were the 3rd owners. In 1929 they began to sell off the land and put a short road in behind the existing home. They built 3 Sears bungalows for their children and named their new street Davis Terrace.

The house originally faced Western Ave. so when we moved here there was no real front and the old garage was in what was now the front yard. The original clapboard siding had been covered over with aluminum siding. We had all of this removed and duplicated the original cedar. We added the front porch an turret to give this wonderful landmark home the grand look that it deserved.

Winner of renovation of the year 2002. Granted Landmark the same year!

USA Today Travel named Glen Ellyn as one of America's Most Picturesque Small Towns as their selection for the state of Illinois. It is a charming, picturesque welcoming community that offers a big city amenities with a small town feel.

What makes Glen Ellyn picturesque? Its historic downtown filled with locally-owned shops, unique restaurants, a restored 1920's movie theater and seasonal events are just some of the many attributes that draw visitors to our award-winning community. Glen Ellyn has a quality of life that is unique for a Village including its cultural, entertainment and recreation opportunities unique to the area.

What makes this house unique

The house is nestled in a great historical neighborhood off of a quiet street on a cul de sac. Walking distance to parks, town and the train which will get you to the heart of Chicago in under 30 minutes. Woodfield Mall, one of the largest in the states is a 20 minute drive away. The house is embracing and has the spa like feel with the whirlpool tub and rain shower. Beautiful private gardens and gracious indoor and outdoor entertaining areas.

The home has a front porch, deck and screened porch. An incredible place for outdoor entertaining. The large European kitchen has a LaCanche triple oven stove, one of many European imports. The large French Farm table seats 6. There is a library directly off of the kitchen. A grand piano graces the music room which has French doors overlooking the large deck. Most of the lighting has been imported from Europe. The turret of the house enables you to see all four directions from the parlor or upstairs Master bedroom sitting room. The master suite also has an ensuite bath with large walk in rain shower and separate Ultra Bath Whirlpool. The south facing windows fill this room with lots of natural light.

Beautiful Home With Many Updates

  • 5 of 5

The Davis House is a truly beautiful home in a very nice Chicago suburb. If you enjoy architecture and old craftsmanship you will truly appreciate this house. There have been considerable updates made throughout the home (kitchen, baths, etc.) that provide modern luxuries and amenities while also maintaining the historical feel of the home. The Davis House is spacious and can easily accommodate larger groups and multiple families looking to rent a home together. Given the era in which the home was originally built, there are certain features that can be somewhat challenging depending on circumstances. Namely the staircase is rather steep and has a number of steps in order to access the 2nd floor (where all of the bedrooms are located). We were traveling with our 2 young children and 2 dogs so the staircase provided a bit of a challenge but was certainly nothing that prevented us from enjoying our stay or moving freely throughout the home. For guests traveling with adults or slightly older children this should not provide any difficulty, but for guests with more limited mobility it should at least be a consideration so there is no disappointment upon arrival.

William was a great host and very responsive to any and all questions before, during, and after our stay. The house was clean and had everything we would need on-site (including a high-chair, pack & play, kitchen utensils / cookware, and a bevy of additional items to make our stay more convenient and comfortable). Overall we had a great stay at the Davis House and enjoyed our interaction with the home as well as the host. Thank you!

Owner's Response: We have had many older guests that have not had any problems with the stairs. They are carpeted for steady footing with a solid hand rail. We do offer a sleeping option in the downstairs library with a half bath.

Lovely Victorian home in a great neighborhood

  • 5 of 5

Thank you William for allowing my family the enjoyment of your warm and historic home. We were very comfortable and enjoyed time in the indoor and outdoor areas. Your garden will be so beautiful when in full bloom too. Your kitchen was spacious and equipped for our needs (except for maybe sharper knives). Loved your quiet neighborhood in Glen Ellyn and it was minutes away from Wheaton where we attended my niece's graduation at Wheaton College and all the ceremonies plus a day trip to Chicago. Our four day visit was perfect for our family. Warmest aloha, Felice and Ed

Perfect house for our family reunion

  • 5 of 5

Five members of our family stayed in the house and hosted other extended family members as they came for meals, music, conversation, and just being together. Everyone loved the home. It provided invitational space, warm energy, a wonderful piano, and the spacious kitchen we required. Our host was available if needed and the house was in excellent condition. I'd recommend this rental to anyone who appreciates a large historic home with lovely special touches.

Mixed feelings

  • 2 of 5

This is a beautiful old home in a great area. However, it is in a state of disrepair and in need of a good scrubbing. We spent much of our first two days cleaning-washing bedding, towels and dishes. The pillows and comforters were smelly, and we borrowed some from the people we were visiting. That said, we did manage to get get things ready for Christmas dinner, and ended up having a lovely time. The neighborhood is wonderful, and there are some great restaurants close by.

Owner's Response: The Davis House which was build in 1892 has original wood work, doors, mouldings and floors. It may lack perfection in ways but think about it...people have walked these floors and been embraced by it's walls for 126 years. It is a labor of love. And of course requires constant attention. Most guests love and respect the history and character. Our house keeper takes great pride in her work and has for a long time. We always make sure that every thing is in order and cleaned from the floors to every fresh linen laid upon each bed. As well as the towels and dishes. We have plenty of extra clean dishes, glasses and towels. As the owner I inspect the property prior to it's use and this was no exception. As always upon arrival we contacted them to let us know how things were and if the needed any thing. We did not receive a reply. If we had heard of any complaint they would have been addressed asap. We love taking care of guests and are very mindful of their needs. Many of our guests return. We look forward to having you as our guests. Yours Sincerely, William Harty,

Not totally as advertised

  • 3 of 5

We rented the house for a long weekend to attend our son's wedding in Naperville. The house was large with a well equipped kitchen. Upon our arrival though we found that there was not the number of beds that were advertised. The listing indicated there was a twin bed in the library but there was none. All the bedrooms were on the 2nd floor andn I would not recommend it for older adults. Therefore, one of our guests had to rent a hotel room. We contacted the owner about several concerns regarding the lack of beds and other problems and received only a brief voicemail that did not address all the issues. Communication with the owner was very poor, and that has resulted in our rating of a 3.

Owner's Response: The Davis House does have the versatility of sleeping a guest in our main level library. We offer a hotel style single bed. This is very accessible and is just on the other side of the door of the library and of course was there at this time. We had been contacted by the guests and the bed had not been mentioned. The call was in regards to the TV and we responded promptly to guide them. We are very responsive to our guests and are always available to answer any questions. We have had many "Older Guests" that have been able to navigate the staircase quite well. The option of the library is a great option. The other beds in the house include a California King in the master. In the master sitting room there is a single day bed. Bed room 2 is quite large and has a Queen bed and a Full size sleeper sofa. The 3rd bed room has a Full bed. We take great pride in all of our vacation rentals and look forward to having you as a guest at the Davis House. Yours Sincerely, William Harty,
