Pollença has located in the north of the island in a fertile valley at the foot of the 330m high mountain Puig Maria with its monastery and the 170m high Puig de Calvari. Today the city lives mainly from tourism. it is also known as a city of art, culture and music. Every summer, here's a great music festival is held, which drags on for weeks and the name 'La Patrona' carries. In addition, early August is a historical festival organized as a reminder of how the Christians, the Moors conquered and finally conquered the island back to about 3 centuries.
The central point of the narrow old town with its winding streets, the busy Plaça Major at the main church Nostra Senyora of Angles, dedicated to the patron saint.
Approximately 200m northwest from the main square, the long stairway, leading up to the 170 meters high Puig de Calvari begins.
The ascent to the Puig de Calvari is romantic, but sweaty. 365 stone steps lined with cypress trees lead up to the hermitage. Next to the chapel there is a cafe to rest with views of the city. Spectacular also the view of a platform is right next to the church over the valley to the sea.
Further afield, about 1.5 km on the road to Palma, it goes up to the Puig de Maria. The curvy and narrow road leads not to the monastery zoom, but ends before. There is also no parking, but only a few rest stops halfway. They should be set therefore in any case on a longer walk.
On every Easter Monday the locals flock to the Puig de Maria, to pay homage to the saint.
Market day is always on Sunday mornings.
