Had a wonderful time; owners were easy to work with, and we discovered a new part of Paris

  • 5 of 5

I was initially apprehensive after realizing that the map shown on VRBO wasn't accurate, however it turned out to be a lovely area to get to know. Rue Mouffetard was a great street to be near; the markets and fresh vegetables, fruits, sausage, cheese, bread, ice cream, etc were just lovely, and provided several delicious picnics. My family of 4 (2 adults, 2 teenagers) stayed 4 nights in July; it was warm, and the street can be noisy, and a fan would have been nice, but it worked out very well for us. The stairs are a trek, but we thought it added to the charm. It's also close enough to the metro to make everything pretty convenient, though the walk to the Seine through the Jardin Des Plantes is lovely as well. We'd happily go back.

Not as advertised

  • 2 of 5

This flat is not in the place it appears on the map! If you plan to visit museums etc on foot choose a different place. It is near a small square St. Medare and is a 30 minute walk from the Seine. One climbs 65 worn wooden spiral steps, slippery and very narrow, to reach the door, making the courtyard not worth using even if it had any seating. The flat is one room with a kitchen made out of the entry way. The kitchen had minimal kitchenware--small undefrosted fridge and a few utensils. No way to cook a real meal. On our arrival the floor was soaking wet. The towels were tiny and very old and stained, as was the one dishrag. There is one bed but the other, a convertible sofa, is impossible to sleep on with metal frame poking through thin foam. The lady who let us in didn't introduce herself but seemed very nervous and we had to pay our balance in cash ( deposit was by PayPal). The street has a very noisy nightclub but we left the windows open anyway as it was very stuffy otherwise--the fan the owner said was in the cupboard could not be found. There is plaster falling from the bathroom ceiling, and the shower is too small to turn around in. Phillippe took a few days to reply during our stay, then had an excuse for each of our concerns -- and we never met him. Would not recommend unless you can't find anything else.

Owner's Response: I have no control of the localization of the apartment on Google map. Indeed, the studio is located a little bit further south in the 5th district. It is 15 minutes walking from the Seine and close to the metro station Censier-Daubenton and to the Pantheon. The spiral stairs (wooden and charming) is the one of a picturesque building (XVIII century) of the heart of Paris. Nevertheless the apartment is completely modern and equipped with everything to cook. The bed and the sofa bed are of high quality and were changed 10 months ago. The towels were new too. There is absolutely no nightclub in the street which is little and quiet ! There are very few nightclubs in the 5th district where there are especially universities, schools, monuments, gardens, typical restaurants and cafes, shops and markets. The floor was slightly wet because it has just been cleaned. The guests had to arrive at the end of the day afternoon but they called me to check-in much earlier. I accepted to please them, that the reason why the floor was still wet. The lady was my wife who is always very polite and helpful. Actually, I had and I have an honest answer to all these surprising assertions !

Happy place to stay

Thank you so much for the flat. It worked out well and cetainly contributed to a lifetime of wonderful memories!

We got to see and do everything that we had set out to do! Location is in walking distance of a lot. We took an uber to the rest.

I found Phillipe to be fair and honest, and everything was as he said it would be.

Happy with my experience.

My husband and I spent 6 nights. The apartment was clear, very clean and well equipped. The bedding was quite comfortable. It is also well located and in a safe and quiet area. The proximity to the many major sites and gardens is perfect for exploring Paris. The apartment is well served by the public transportation(metro, bus, RER). Nearby the apartment, there is the Mouffetard quarter with so good bakeries, butcher's shops, cheese markers, wine merchants. The area is full of typical french restaurants and cafes. Philippe and Marine were extremely helful with recommandations on where to go, how to get there and where to eat and drink. When we booked we were worried about bedbugs because of the previous reviews. Philippe certified that the problem was solved and he told the truth. There was absolutely no bedbug. We plan to return to Paris this winter and we would definitely stay here again and recommand the apartment to our family and friends.

Great Neighbourhood - Bed Bugs Persist

  • 1 of 5

Though we loved the neighbourhood, the apartment is plagued by bed bugs and requires a professional and thorough treatment. The owner was responsive to our emails. Unfortunately, the pest situation is beyond spot treatment. I am sorry that I can not recommend this unit.

Owner's Response: No, the problem does not persist any more. It is solved since the beginning of July. Indeed, on this summer Paris knows a problem of bed bugs ; and I have had it in the unit. I was very surprised when I discovered this problem. So, on June 17, I made a professional come to exterminate them. This first time was not enough. Thus, I made come another one ( on July 7), who expanded a very strong biocid in all the volume of the unit. Then, following this intervention, I changed all my bedding. Since this day, on July 7, I never saw one bed bug in the unit ; and I hosted three times new guests. They did not speak me and complain about bed bugs. This unfortunate period belongs to the past; and with the new bedding, the unit is more comfortable than ever.

Bed Bug report #2, dirty apartment, great location

  • 1 of 5

We arrived probably just after the previous reviewer left, but unfortunately did not know that they had discovered bed bugs. I broke out with severe bite marks and did not figure out it was bed bugs until after reading the reviewers comments. We arrived May 22, so obviously the apartment was NOT cleaned of the bugs. It was also quite dirty. The usual comments on this apartment were all true as well. It has over 60 stairs and is not for large families. The Washing Machine leaks. The map is incorrect. I notified the owner it was incorrect after we booked and he sent me the address and I learned it was very different that it appeared in the ad. He has not corrected it which seems deliberately deceiving. I will report this to the web site company. Across the street is a Jewish center, which is cool, except that with the threat of terrorism high in Paris they have a sub-machine gun carrying guard 24/7 in outside of their front door, which is very disconcerting when entering and leaving the apartment. The neighborhood is excellent and the metro is fairly close. The building is old, creaky, and the owners did not clean the bed bugs out and did not warn us. Very unprofessional. I would not recommend this place to others. The owner also required we pay our balance due in cash upon arrival. I recovered from the bed bug bites during out next leg of our journey in Italy.

Owner's Response: This guest takes support on the previous review to justify this one. However, he did not come in the unit after the previous reviewer (30 May), but before (22 May). During his stay, why did he never phoned me or emailed me to complain about bedbugs ? He waits for one month to complain about supposed bedbugs and to write this review ! Isn't it curious ? He dares accusing me of deceiving guests about the map, but I can't modify it. Moreover, the location of the unit is only slightly moved on this map ; and I indicate on the announce that the unit is located nearby Censier-Daubenton metro station and Mouffetard street. It is easy to find it on Google map. The unit is bright and clean ; the building is picturesque, not creaky. The washing machine works perfectly. Obviously, this guest did not like "le vieux Paris". Is it a reason to write an inequitable review ?
