As a Native New Yorker I'm partial to the geographical flora and fauna and vacation getaway experiences that are indigenous to New York State. So The Berkshires, The Catskills and of course The Long Island Beaches are special places to me. My first time on Shelter Island was incredible not just because of the New England feel, the hilly, small town roads, the native plant and wildlife that prompted me to fall in love with this special island. It was Celina and Tom's charming and extremely lovely home that solicited intense affection from my family and me. The cozy living space accented with cozy pillows, knitted throw, and a formidable collection of board games was only outdone by the fire place accompanied by all the required encoutrements to create and maintain a fantastic, crackling blaze. Anchored by a neat middle island counter with plenty of seating for family/friends to gather to have a communal breakfast or plan beach activities - a more formal dining set for six is close by. The well equipped kitchen pulled it all together as a backdrop all with a captivating view from the large picture window which almost brings the outdoors inside. All three bedrooms were comfy with good closet/storage space, ceiling fans and a/c. It is clear that someone is paying close attention to things like textiles and a rather tasteful eye for detail (if things like thread count actually counts for you). This was clear to me with noticeable touches sprinkled throughout the space. That kind of eye isn't lost on me.
The outdoor space was almost like another oasis. My son thought the tire swing was the best invention ever while my haughty spouse and I were partial to the hammock and Adirondacks chairs positioned around the property. The (heated, sigh) swimming pool and jacuzzi were nicely enclosed with native bushes and trees giving it an air of privacy and that screened-in patio with plenty of seating and ceiling fan truly sealed the deal for us as we all dreamed out loud, plotting our return. Celina, the host, was fabulously attentive and very responsive.
This place is a true treasure. Incredibly comfortable home with everything we could need on hand. Ceiling fans in every room make the place so cool and breezy that we barely needed the a/c despite the heat. I've never rented a house before and went with very low expectations- brought my own towels, sheets, utensils, plates, and needed none of it as everything was clean and comfortable and lovely. The screened-in porch was a delight. My kids had a blast watching the deer in the early morning and early evening, and the tire swing was a HUGE bonus and total surprise! My daughter lost her mind with joy to discover that. and us grownups relished the hammock and the plentiful and very comfy chairs and sofas. The pool was perfect- my crew has little tolerance for cold water so the heater was fantastic and the hot tub another treat. The views of the massive and gorgeous property were spectacular and there were wonderful views from every room. I can't stop raving about this house and the property and the location was fantastic as well. Nothing was more than 5 minutes away. We fell in love with Whale's Tale for mini golf and I am still dreaming about Commander Cody's fried scallops. I grew up going to the Hamptons and had never been to Shelter Island and was thrilled to experience this treasure- beautiful and even on Labor Day weekend not a crowd or single incident of traffic to be found. Celina was extremely helpful, very responsive to questions and returned my security deposit within one day! Only thing to note is that the laundry and second bathroom are in the basement, and that was a bit tricky to find- it's the door in the screened in porch! I can't recommend this property enough and am already plotting my next stay here. Thank you so much, Celina and Tom for making our stay just glorious!
This house was wonderful. The kitchen was fully equipped with spices, paper goods, sunscreen, bug spray -- everything you need but don't necessarily want to pack. The pool and hot tub were the focal attraction for our clan, but the screened in porch and ample supply of board games were very much appreciated. My girls loved the family of deer who visited twice daily, and the close proximity to town and beaches was also a hit. The owners are incredibly responsive and helpful. I cannot say enough good things about this place! I would only add: the Clam Chowder at SALT is the best on the island!
This house is wonderful--located on a big leafy property right by Bootlegger's Alley. My three friends and I arrived for a full week stay and we had wonderful walks down to the beach, jogs along Brander Parkway and large dinners cooked on the very large gas grill in the backyard. Also: sitting in the hammock, and taking dips in the pool and hot tub.
A small modest, but very endearing house is how I would describe it. Be prepared for some serious R&R.
If you love Shelter Island, you will also love this house!
A magical place you can only get to by ferry. There are no stoplights.
