Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 nights

About the property

House: 2 Bdrms, Kit, LR/Porch, 1 Bath (Sleeps 4-5); Guest House available

The stunning Japanese style house, with its guest house, is located on the beach by the small fishing village of Cabuya. The sun rises directly in front of the house over the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Nicoya. Costa Rica’s first national wildlife reserve is located a short distance to the south, at the tip of the peninsula. Provisions are available in Cabuya, and several excellent local eateries provide a variety of cuisines. Montezuma, with its beautiful beaches, many restaurants and activities, is just three miles up the beach to the North. There are special spots to swim and explore between Montezuma and the Wildlife Reserve. Dos Iguanas was inspired by the clean and simple style of traditional Japanese architecture. The house is a sincere and successful expression of a natural philosophy that invites surrounding scenery into the living spaces. Your stay will most likely include a visit by the local tribe of howler monkeys. Ask about spillover space in our guest house.

Space: The main house has one large bedroom upstairs with a queen-size and a single bed. Downstairs is a kitchen, bathroom, eating area, and a second room with a single bed. Both houses offer views of the beach and sounds of the breaking waves. If the monkeys don't wake you, the birds will surely welcome you to your day.

If you are looking for a simple, pure but elegant style of living, away from the intrusions of TV, doorbells, unwanted phone calls and endless errands, Dos Iguanas will fit the bill. You will truly feel you have been AWAY. The living is al fesco; you may be visited by hummingbirds, parakeets or even toucans. An iguana or two will surely pass by as you dine on the porch. Here you are one with nature: there is no escaping it! Neighborhood fishermen will be glad to take you out to hunt your supper or bring back their fresh catch to you. In fact, they will even prepare your meal!. Homade jellies by Nena, from local fruits, are for sale at the nearby rivers' edge at Nena's home. Cabuya, just up the road, is a typical small Costa Rican village. There are Tico style restaurants, the local Cantina with Costa Rican Beer, a church, grocery store, a fabulous bakery and even a library. The first-ever National Park is down the road for your hiking pleasure.

Peaceful and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed every minute spent in this great house. Perfect for our needs. The instructions to get to the house were very clear. And Cindy, the manager, was welcoming, kind, and available, should we have needed help with anything – but we didn't ;-)

The house was clean and in order when we arrived. It had everything we needed, even a mixer for our morning smoothies! :-)

Comfy hammock and beds. Great vacation! Thank you so much! :-)

Two Months Escape from Cold Old England

  • 5 of 5

This is our second long stay in Cabuya and our love of it is undiminished.

Sean s house is lovely in a great location and well maintained . We did not have a car but with a convenient bus service and the local bakery ,supermarkets and fisherman supplying good quality fish , shrimp and lobster we wanted for nothing.

The trees in the garden offer plenty of nice shade and encourages lots of wild life.

The house is well equipped and very comfortable

Amazing place !

  • 5 of 5

We had a really great stay ! I understand why the owner loves that place so much.

Great walks on the beaches, snorkelling around the cemetary island, hiking in Cabo Blanco, or just playing in the waves in Montezuma, everything was great ! We saw most of Costa Rica s fauna in the backyard : iguanas, two kinds of monkeys, squirrels and hummingbirds, and an anteater even woke us in the middle of the night. We even could have some nice bathing at high tide directly in front of the house. At low tide though, it is rocky so you have to wait a little before you go swimming.

Communication with Sean were very efficient and he has a contact in the village who quickly solved our only problem about the washing machine.

Wifi is excellent, for those who want to stay in touch with the outer world...

There is a small convenience store about 5 minutes walk from the house and very good and cheap restaurants in the village.

A 4WD car is probably preferable to get there, but not mandatory.

Amazing experience

  • 5 of 5

The entire experience was unforgettable! Sean was very attentive and went above and beyond answering our questions before the trip. We arrived late, but followed the instructions and were able to get in without help from the housekeeper. However she arrived shortly after our phone call to show us around.

Our 10-day stay at this property was PERFECT! the house is truly unique, very comfortable, the location is ideal - close to the grocery market, a few eateries, and off the main road, which made it secluded and tranquil.

We came to practice silent yoga, and in search for privacy, but yet - experiences. We got it all! Instead of guided tours, we had a neighbor's dog showing us around. She helped us explore different places every day - took us to the island, to the river, to the Cabo Blanco national park. On the last day she wanted us to meet her owner, but we couldn't - we were still practicing silence.

The beach is rocky, so don't forget to bring the swimming shoes. Then you won't have to look for a nice entry - the spot right in front of the house is good for swimming early in the mornings and in the afternoons. The location was so private that you are surely to feel on a deserted island most of the time. And yet - just a few hundred meters away there is life with a few bars, music, extremely nice people. And Montezuma is only 7 km way.

If you are into yoga - there is a place in town that would organize yoga classes and fire ceremonies for you.

But if you come to connect to the nature - all of it is delivered to your door: the monkeys, the chickens, a ton of beautiful birds and huge butterflies, of course the iguanas and so much more!

Many thanks to the owners and the housekeeper - we truly felt like a family, being treated with such kindness.

Amazing place! We are sure to be back for more!

Connect to the real Costa Rica

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from an absolutely perfect stay at Sean's home in Cabuya. First, let me say that from our first interaction Sean was extremely accommodating to our needs. We had been travelling so our schedule was changing and Sean was always quick to reply with the answer we were hoping for. We had initially booked 7 days but soon opted to extend this to a full two week stay and we are so happy we did!

The house is unique to any place we have stayed before. Our first night it took a bit getting used to the open air/inside combinations and it seemed like a lot of doors, but we quickly got the hang of it and came to love the layout. We wanted to do plenty of yoga in Montezuma and were worried it would be a difficult commute without a car, but the 7kms to town proved to be a highlight. We rented bikes some days, walked others, and took advantage of the frequent and comfortable bus that runs between the two towns.

The house is perfectly situated on the ocean, and though it is not ideal for swimming in the back yard, great beaches were only a short walk any direction. The walk to the Cabuya Island at sunset was a highlight of our trip. We would wake up in the upper floor with cool ocean breezes floating off the water and into the house only to be greeted by the most spectacular sunrises every morning! We called the back yard the monkey highway as there seemed to be 24/7 traffic of howler and capuchin monkeys constantly passing by our windows. It was the lush fruit trees that dot the property that they were after and we enjoy the star fruit and manazana agua as much as them.

Cabuya itself has every and more you need with two small grocery stores, a bakery, and a handful of quiet restaurants.

This is a perfect getaway for someone looking for the convenience of Montezuma mixed with the quiet, rural feel of authentic Costa Rica that is getting harder to find. We left feeling relaxed, grounded, and looking forward to our next stay at Dos Iguanas.

Absolutely perfect way to experience Costa Rica!!!

  • 5 of 5

We had three adults and a two year old staying in the main house. It was the perfect home base for our adventures in the area. You have your own beach, as well as resident lizards and monkeys. Hikes to the island at low tide, and Cabo Blanco Preserve just down the road. Access to restaurants and markets right in Cabuya, and anything else you need in the nearby towns. And if you enjoy woodworking you will really appreciate the home's construction. All the necessary instructions and details were provided, and we were promptly contacted by the owner and property manager when we arrived, as well as throughout our stay. I really can't say enough about the whole experience. If you are looking for a place truly off the beaten path and an amazing way to experience the nature and people of Costa Rica, this home is for you. We are already planning our return.
