Cabuya House Rental Photos and Description

House: 2 Bdrms, Kit, LR/Porch, 1 Bath (Sleeps 4-5); Guest House available

The stunning Japanese style house, with its guest house, is located on the beach by the small fishing village of Cabuya. The sun rises directly in front of the house over the Pacific Ocean and the Gulf of Nicoya. Costa Rica’s first national wildlife reserve is located a short distance to the south, at the tip of the peninsula. Provisions are available in Cabuya, and several excellent local eateries provide a variety of cuisines. Montezuma, with its beautiful beaches, many restaurants and activities, is just three miles up the beach to the North. There are special spots to swim and explore between Montezuma and the Wildlife Reserve. Dos Iguanas was inspired by the clean and simple style of traditional Japanese architecture. The house is a sincere and successful expression of a natural philosophy that invites surrounding scenery into the living spaces. Your stay will most likely include a visit by the local tribe of howler monkeys. Ask about spillover space in our guest house.

Space: The main house has one large bedroom upstairs with a queen-size and a single bed. Downstairs is a kitchen, bathroom, eating area, and a second room with a single bed. Both houses offer views of the beach and sounds of the breaking waves. If the monkeys don't wake you, the birds will surely welcome you to your day.

Connect to the real Costa Rica

We just returned from an absolutely perfect stay at Sean's home in Cabuya. First, let me say that from our first interaction Sean was extremely accommodating to our needs. We had been travelling so our schedule was changing and Sean was always quick to reply with the answer we were hoping for. We had initially booked 7 days but soon opted to extend this to a full two week stay and we are so happy we did!

The house is unique to any place we have stayed before. Our first night it took a bit getting used to the open air/inside combinations and it seemed like a lot of doors, but we quickly got the hang of it and came to love the layout. We wanted to do plenty of yoga in Montezuma and were worried it would be a difficult commute without a car, but the 7kms to town proved to be a highlight. We rented bikes some days, walked others, and took advantage of the frequent and comfortable bus that runs between the two towns.

The house is perfectly situated on the ocean, and though it is not ideal for swimming in the back yard, great beaches were only a short walk any direction. The walk to the Cabuya Island at sunset was a highlight of our trip. We would wake up in the upper floor with cool ocean breezes floating off the water and into the house only to be greeted by the most spectacular sunrises every morning! We called the back yard the monkey highway as there seemed to be 24/7 traffic of howler and capuchin monkeys constantly passing by our windows. It was the lush fruit trees that dot the property that they were after and we enjoy the star fruit and manazana agua as much as them.

Cabuya itself has every and more you need with two small grocery stores, a bakery, and a handful of quiet restaurants.

This is a perfect getaway for someone looking for the convenience of Montezuma mixed with the quiet, rural feel of authentic Costa Rica that is getting harder to find. We left feeling relaxed, grounded, and looking forward to our next stay at Dos Iguanas.

Absolutely perfect way to experience Costa Rica!!!

  • 5 of 5

We had three adults and a two year old staying in the main house. It was the perfect home base for our adventures in the area. You have your own beach, as well as resident lizards and monkeys. Hikes to the island at low tide, and Cabo Blanco Preserve just down the road. Access to restaurants and markets right in Cabuya, and anything else you need in the nearby towns. And if you enjoy woodworking you will really appreciate the home's construction. All the necessary instructions and details were provided, and we were promptly contacted by the owner and property manager when we arrived, as well as throughout our stay. I really can't say enough about the whole experience. If you are looking for a place truly off the beaten path and an amazing way to experience the nature and people of Costa Rica, this home is for you. We are already planning our return.

Great Chill-Out Place

  • 5 of 5

We arrived (14th Feb. 2015 ) at Dos Iguanos, following a fantastic 11 day coast to coast road trip across the north of Costa Rica. Our first impression upon sight of the property was that we had made an excellent decision, both with the house and also the location.

The larger of the Dos Iguanos is bright, airy & large, the upstairs bedroom area being a particularly good space. The kitchen & appliances were adequate for purpose and the patio absolutely suited for outdoor living. There is plenty of shade on offer here both on the patio and in the garden. The downstairs bathroom was large having both a bath & shower.

Walk 40 metres through the unspoilt natural garden and you find the pebble beach with small areas of sand, backed by amazing pieces of driftwood. If the tide is in swimming is easy, if out, the beach is very rocky and aqua shoes allow you to still wander around in the rock pools. We were visited in the garden by howler & capuchin monkeys, iguanas and squirrels plus numerous birds, whilst pelicans, frigates and herons could be seen at the beach.

Cabuya is a great virtually unspoilt fishing village, 4 or 5 "restaurants" of which Marvins was our favourite. Two local supermarkets provide most daily needs although fresh meat is best brought in from Cabano. A small second hand book shop plus a gift shop completes the shopping options. Roads are unpaved and most people walk around or hire bikes. Cabo Blanco Reserve is just 2km away & its 6 mile round trip hike to a fantastic beach complete with wildlife spotting on the way, is a must do.

Finally, our booking through the owner Sean went without a hitch and manager Cindy was on hand to deal with any issues arising during our stay. We left feeling relaxed and well rested although a little sad we weren`t staying longer.

Great getaway

  • 5 of 5

Everything about Dos Iguanas was perfect. Beautiful location on the beach, living at the canopy level for close-on views of the troops of howlers and capuchins moving through on a daily basis, great birdlife, and comfortable hammocks for relaxing and watching it all. Cindy coming by to make sure everything was fine and share fun evening conversations was another treat. Blenders, fridges and coffee pots with great restaurants a walk down the road and a kitchen when we wanted to stay in. Rarely been anywhere where the people in town were so friendly. And the houses at Dos Igaunas are so beautifully built. The patios and hammocks and open dining with pass-through kitchens, the open upstairs with the sliding screens really made you feel part of the site. We rented both houses and the ability to move back and forth while still having great places for each of us to stay in was perfect. The two dogs that adopted us for the whole stay made it feel even more like somewhere we were living rather than visiting. The ability to hike in Cabo Blanco and Curu, and ride on the beach in the moonlight with Marvin from El Pinto just topped off the stay. Definitely a place to come back to.

Fabulous Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5

Dos Iguanas is wonderful. Our family (four adults and three children) rented both houses for our vacation and had a really great time. The accomodations were very nice. The kitchen and linens were clean and well stocked. Being right on the beach was a lot of fun. Sean (the owner) was very helpful and responsive before our trip in helping us with our questions and planning. Cabuya is a great town, and we enjoyed being located centrally between Santa Teresa and Montezuma. The bakery in Cabuya is wonderful as well as the frozen fruitas at Jenny's Coyote Café. We would definitely stay here again.

Tranquil Tropical Treasure

  • 5 of 5

We loved our time at this Costa Rican gem of a property. We only wish we had planned to stay longer. Our days were filled with total relaxation in the comfort of the remarkably built beach house, exploring the natural splendor and listening to the abundant wildlife surrounding, cooking fresh local food, swimming at high tide and taking the time to soak in all the pure beauty.

We highly recommend this property and hope to return one day soon.
