Native Canadians desiring a touch of the real Hawaii.

We chose this beautiful location in Hawaii for it's true authenticity and peaceful lush setting. When you wake up here, you feel that you have been transported to the Hawaii of days gone by. There is a great variety of activities from diving, swimming, snorkeling, sightseeing, and shopping. We are located in the country with the convenience of close shopping.
While staying in Kalapana, the country atmosphere is augmented by the close local cafe, convenience store and Kava bar. We can see the ocean on all sides and the volcano flowing into the ocean from the meditation room. Drive just a little while and you can go to the most beautiful tidal pools and hot ponds. Up the hill to Volcano National Park, or to the other side of the island to more beaches and scenic wonders. Sit on the beach sun tanning while looking at the snow at the Mauna Loa observatory.
We are back in Ohio, but we continue to smile due to our wonderful experiences on the island.
We loved staying at your home in Kalapana. It was a fabulous home away from home. We were particularly impressed with how well stocked the kitchen was. Whatever we were looking for, you had it! We also appreciated your sharing of other items, such as flashlights (and batteries!). The house was extremely relaxing, comfortable and clean. We appreciated the way the cross-ventilation worked so that minutes after entering the house, it was breezy and cool. The meditation room was the perfect place to start the day with some yoga - and of course, a great place to see the glow of the lava flow at night. (By the way, we would have written a note in your guest book, but the book is now filled. We enjoyed reading the suggestions of places to visit both in your owners' book and also in the guest book.
This is a beautiful house in a quiet residential neighborhood with complete privacy. It has all the amenities and more. It is walking distance (15 min) to Uncle Robert's market and restaurant and to the ocean as well. The owner was very accomodating of my changes in plans as well. The house is very reasonably priced, and I highly recommend it!
Spent one night here and wished my stay was longer. Perfect place for my family.
I would say that this is a great deal for the money if you appreciate a remote location. It is near some very interesting natural sites. It would rate five stars from me if the squeaky doors were oiled. The homeowner provided good directions and a map.
My husband, sister, and I spent five nights in this charming house. The property was well-maintained, secluded, and it was very exciting to see the glow of the volcano from the top of the stairs too! We made fast friends with the geckos and the rooster who patrolled the grounds - a very friendly fellow! The house cooled quickly after opening windows, and we only needed to use the fans one night during our stay. Off-the-beaten-path is just what we needed after spending our days touring the Hilo side of the island. I recommend arriving during daylight the first day of your stay, to ensure you can see the road signs. Everything was well marked, but it's very dark on the island after sundown (not many street lights). It was difficult to leave, but so glad we opted to stay outside the city. Would recommend this place to anyone looking for a peaceful retreat. Also, if you're in Hilo, check out the Hawaiian Style Cafe - go hungry - portions are as abundant as the hospitality on the island.
We spent 4 days in Hale Ka Ikena Nani in December, while it was -3* back in Colorado. We really enjoyed the seclusion of this area that truly felt like we were away from it all. The house was clean and had everything we needed for a few days of sightseeing and relaxing. We enjoyed the meditation room and being able to walk to the lava beach and the wonderful little village of Kalapana – what a great find. We enjoyed good food and local music at the Kava bar on Wednesday night. Well situated for trips into Hilo or to Volcanoes National Park, this house was just what we were looking for to get away from the tourist mainstream for a few days. Thanks!
Clean, comfortable. Dogs barking next door got old real fast.
We are in close proximity to the Red Road with its stunning coastline views, Kehenna black sand beach where you can swim with a resident pod of dolphins, Kalani Oceanside retreat where you can take yoga classes, book a massage, or for a small fee enjoy the pool, sauna and hot tub. Enjoy a surf at Issac Hale Park the local surf spot and relax in geothermally heated waters at Ahalanui warm ponds. The nearby Kapoho tidal ponds will take your breath away as you snorkel in pristine waters. Visit the Hawaiian Village, just down the road, known as Uncle Roberts where you can walk out over an old lava flow to a newly forming black sand beach and drink the traditional “awa” at the Kava Bar while you chat with friendly locals. On your way out stop at the the Kalapana Cafe for a creamy Haupia (coconut) milkshake, or ono(delicious) fish burger or grab last minute necessities at the Kalapana Convenience store .
