We chose this beautiful location in Hawaii for it's true authenticity and peaceful lush setting. When you wake up here, you feel that you have been transported to the Hawaii of days gone by. There is a great variety of activities from diving, swimming, snorkeling, sightseeing, and shopping. We are located in the country with the convenience of close shopping.
While staying in Kalapana, the country atmosphere is augmented by the close local cafe, convenience store and Kava bar. We can see the ocean on all sides and the volcano flowing into the ocean from the meditation room. Drive just a little while and you can go to the most beautiful tidal pools and hot ponds. Up the hill to Volcano National Park, or to the other side of the island to more beaches and scenic wonders. Sit on the beach sun tanning while looking at the snow at the Mauna Loa observatory.
We are back in Ohio, but we continue to smile due to our wonderful experiences on the island.
We loved staying at your home in Kalapana. It was a fabulous home away from home. We were particularly impressed with how well stocked the kitchen was. Whatever we were looking for, you had it! We also appreciated your sharing of other items, such as flashlights (and batteries!). The house was extremely relaxing, comfortable and clean. We appreciated the way the cross-ventilation worked so that minutes after entering the house, it was breezy and cool. The meditation room was the perfect place to start the day with some yoga - and of course, a great place to see the glow of the lava flow at night. (By the way, we would have written a note in your guest book, but the book is now filled. We enjoyed reading the suggestions of places to visit both in your owners' book and also in the guest book.
We had a pleasant stay and found every thing to be in order, clean and relaxing. Loved watching the geckos.
My family has really enjoyed this place. It was smaller than I thought it would be from the pictures, especially the meditation room, but it still suited us well. Aside from the dogs next door who yelped and cried the whole time the owners were away, it was a very quiet and peaceful place. The coqui frogs got quite loud at night, but we couldn't really hear them when we were inside with the doors closed. A few things FYI things to mention is that there are no pans or dishes for the oven other than one small 8x8 pyres, which we didn't discover until after doing all of our shopping. She's so well stocked with everything else in the kitchen, even Tupperware which was a nice surprise, I was quite surprised by that. Having a family of six, the tiny little Pyrex and the little toaster oven weren't near enough for our pork chops, taco shells, cookies, etc. Also, we rented 4 DVD's only to get back and find out the Dvd player didn't work. The snorkel sets were nice, but they were filthy, so bring bleach, also, she has a cooler we were looking forward to using, but it too was really gross, so we just filled up a bag with the ice packs she had (really nice to have). There were plenty of towels and toilet paper, even for the 6 of us. We stay in a lot of places, and it is very nice and rare to have everything you need for that first night or two before having time to go to the store. There were a lot of little things that she's put thought into having there that made it extra nice, like the binoculars that we used a lot! We're wishing we'd planned to stay here a week instead of going to Kona for a couple of days. This part of the island has by far been our favorite spot out of all of Honolulu and the Big Island. We'd definitely come back to this house again.
I loved this place. The little room up top was amazing. Full of windows, sleeping in the fresh breezes, waking to the glow of the volcano at night, the moonshine, during the day seeing the water and the steam from the lava fall was just fantastic. It reminded me of being in a fire lookout tower. I also liked that you cant see any neighbors (though you will hear them driving past on the gravel road, or their dogs barking and howling periodically). The back deck and yard are super private. And the main house is nice and big and open and clean. Kitchen is not super stocked with gear, but was plenty for what we needed, and pleasant to work in. One strange thing about this particular stay we had (and why I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5)was that the kitchen sink hadn't been rinsed of cleanser and the tile floors were still wet and the whole place smelled strongly of chlorine bleach when we arrived (from cleaning I suppose) and the floors didn't dry at all for over 2 days, so that was a bit creepy on the feet for a while! Even after they dried, some mornings they were damp again from humidity. We stayed here for a week and loved it.. And the longer we stayed here, the more we liked it and didn't want to leave! Very comfortable and relaxing home base. FYI: wifi allotment is very limited here, they just have a wireless cellular network, so don't expect to use your laptop much, and no streaming. Verizon works here, and AT&T (I believe) but T-mobile only a little. Definitely check this place out!
We recently stayed at Tracey's rental. When we drove into the driveway, we were surprised at how large the house is...with plenty of lanai space! Lots of windows, nice air movement...and additional fans if we wanted them. Plenty of space...two futon bed/couches in addition to the bedrooms! The house is bright with the windows, but very private...surrounded by trees including a monkey pod!
Our son slept in the meditation room. Each day though, I would go up the stairs to his room...there are big, big views from up there. You can see where the lava is making it's way to the ocean (all you see is a long, telltale smoke trail)...and you can see the big steam plume where it empties into the water. Sunsets are amazing too!
We rented bikes close by and biked around...only $20-30 a day.
A perfect walk from her house is to the little church that has narrowly escaped lava twice (they moved the church both times)...it is open every day and is worth a visit. The inside paintings are pretty awesome.
This house is handy to Hilo (saw a movie there and ate at Cafe Pesto...yum!)... and isn't far from the excellent fish restaurant (in a strip mall in Pahoa)...also close to snorkeling...Volcano National Park...great location really.
Tracey was great to work with, super reasonable, accommodating and understanding when we had to contact her. We would reccommend this rental and hope to stay again ourselves! Thanks Tracey!
My family had such a wonderful time here! If your'e here on a Wednesday night go to uncle Roberts AWA hale right down the road. They have the night farmers market; lots of vendors , ono food, live Hawaiian/reggae music and a bar. They serve kava in the little grass hut next door :) We stayed to midnight it was a blast! Kaimu beach right down the road is also beautiful and a must see. Took the family also to volcano national park which is about a 45 minute ish drive from here but worth it! The highlight of the trip was driving to the end of the road a few minutes from the hale, we got there to find parking at around 630 pm. Make sure you have some good trek shoes, water and flashlights. The hike is 8 miles total to and back, they have bikes you can rent also and little food vendors at the entrance...We walked but it was worth every mile and every step! Please go if you can! You get to see Pele in all her glory as she pours into the ocean...Go at night and see her beautiful red glow and her power. Tracey is wonderful and so is her hale...Plenty of everything here especially the aloha and the hale and surroundings are beautiful and it's so peaceful out here. If you want to experience Hawaii you won't be disappointed.
I stayed in this house for two nights with my husband, sister and brother in law. I was responsible to choosing where we would stay on the big island. I am very pleased to say that everyone in my group was very pleasantly surprised by the home and how beautiful it is.
The beds were comfortable. Everything we needed was available. We really enjoyed the comfort the home offered and the relaxed spaces all around the house. I spent one early morning in the meditation room watching the sun rise through the back window waiting for everyone else to wake up. It is so peaceful. We spent most of our time outside enjoying the beauty and sounds. The chickens that run around the yard all the time are great and the little kitty cat that visited is so unbelievably sweet. We named her Tiny Tina. The name just seemed to fit her. The cute little gecko's were amazing to watch too.
We found the kitchen to be equipped with everything we needed and the laundry right on the back deck was a great amenity.
If we had not been so tired from our adventures we would have taken advantage of the games that were available in the closet.
This was the first time I had ever used a VRBO and I will definitely be using one again on my next great adventure.
Thank you for letting us stay at your wonderful, beautiful home.
We are in close proximity to the Red Road with its stunning coastline views, Kehenna black sand beach where you can swim with a resident pod of dolphins, Kalani Oceanside retreat where you can take yoga classes, book a massage, or for a small fee enjoy the pool, sauna and hot tub. Enjoy a surf at Issac Hale Park the local surf spot and relax in geothermally heated waters at Ahalanui warm ponds. The nearby Kapoho tidal ponds will take your breath away as you snorkel in pristine waters. Visit the Hawaiian Village, just down the road, known as Uncle Roberts where you can walk out over an old lava flow to a newly forming black sand beach and drink the traditional “awa” at the Kava Bar while you chat with friendly locals. On your way out stop at the the Kalapana Cafe for a creamy Haupia (coconut) milkshake, or ono(delicious) fish burger or grab last minute necessities at the Kalapana Convenience store .
