We chose this beautiful location in Hawaii for it's true authenticity and peaceful lush setting. When you wake up here, you feel that you have been transported to the Hawaii of days gone by. There is a great variety of activities from diving, swimming, snorkeling, sightseeing, and shopping. We are located in the country with the convenience of close shopping.
While staying in Kalapana, the country atmosphere is augmented by the close local cafe, convenience store and Kava bar. We can see the ocean on all sides and the volcano flowing into the ocean from the meditation room. Drive just a little while and you can go to the most beautiful tidal pools and hot ponds. Up the hill to Volcano National Park, or to the other side of the island to more beaches and scenic wonders. Sit on the beach sun tanning while looking at the snow at the Mauna Loa observatory.
We are back in Ohio, but we continue to smile due to our wonderful experiences on the island.
We loved staying at your home in Kalapana. It was a fabulous home away from home. We were particularly impressed with how well stocked the kitchen was. Whatever we were looking for, you had it! We also appreciated your sharing of other items, such as flashlights (and batteries!). The house was extremely relaxing, comfortable and clean. We appreciated the way the cross-ventilation worked so that minutes after entering the house, it was breezy and cool. The meditation room was the perfect place to start the day with some yoga - and of course, a great place to see the glow of the lava flow at night. (By the way, we would have written a note in your guest book, but the book is now filled. We enjoyed reading the suggestions of places to visit both in your owners' book and also in the guest book.
Clean and very well kept. Very spacious for 2 BR, would accommodate a family of 4-6. Owner has thought of all needed amenities. Very Private location and central to Puna activities. We'll come again. Mahalo Tracey!
This was a beautiful property that was perfect for our visit to the Hilo side of the Big Island. The house was spacious, clean, and in a quiet area. From the backyard, you can hear the ocean crashing against the sea cliff. From the upstairs yoga room, you have sweeping views of the volcano and can see the ocean. This place is the perfect jumping off point for lounging on nearby black-sand beaches or hiking Volcanoes National Park. There is a charcoal BBQ grill available for use at the house. There is no air conditioner here, and the house gets quite warm, even with the widows open and fans turned on. Overall, we would recommend this beautiful property as a great place to stay for your East Big Island vacation.
This property was really nice to stay in, I'm pretty sure its been built quite recently. It was crazy driving to the property, the first time we drove there was the middle of the night and you turn down this road with very thick vegetation and think where the hell am I. But after spending a week there the house is located in the best location in all of Hawai'i. The south western corner is so beautiful, dense forrest, near the ocean with lots of tide pools to snorkel and really cool people. This was the best time we had in Hawai'i after going to the three major islands.
I stayed here for a week in March, and I can't imagine having stayed anywhere else. 10-15 min drive to two swimming beaches (not supervised). Kehena is a clothing optional beach (usually around half the people are clothed.. I saw three turtles and a school of hundreds, if not thousands of fish). Lodging is also very close to the Kalapana lava flow trail, which is a must see. Tracey is an excellent host, very communicative and leaves clear instructions. Couldn't recommend enough!!
House is great and yoga room is a nice addition. Off the beaten path but you can walk to the "new beach".
This was a beautiful retreat! and very quiet, as far as human and traffic noise... the coqui frogs and birdsong, as well as the ubiquitous cocks a-crowing, pleasantly replaced the latter :) The house was clean and spacious and had more than everything we needed to cook our meals and entertain ourselves. We were out exploring most of the days and we came home to extremely hot conditions, soon remedied by opening up every one of the many windows. Meanwhile, the lanais were cool enough for us to enjoy our meals and evenings unwinding... the coolest thing was being able to see from the meditation room the plume of smoke arising from the lava pouring into the ocean, as well as the faint glow of lava along the side of the mountain at night. Also, we were within walking distance to the market and spent a few hours there taking in the local fare and music where we met lively and friendly locals... a wonderful experience... we highly recommend stopping to get a cup of "Chipper" which is a delicious freshly roasted coffee made with whole coconut ~ it's out of this world!! We also had our first taste of fresh cane juice (so refreshing!) at a stall along the way to the market and, whilst chewing on a piece of cane, realized we were talking to the maker of the CD we'd watched the night before (provided at the house) about the 2014 lava flow that threatened Pahoa and devastated Kalapana. It was really incredible to speak to people who experienced the event first hand. Just a few minutes away by car is where people go in to see the current lava flow and there we rented bikes for the 7km round trip journey which was AMAZING! We wish we could've stayed at the house for at least a few days longer... 4 nights wasn't enough for us to see everything we wanted but we are glad to have had the experience we did... we shall certainly return for more in the future!!!
We are in close proximity to the Red Road with its stunning coastline views, Kehenna black sand beach where you can swim with a resident pod of dolphins, Kalani Oceanside retreat where you can take yoga classes, book a massage, or for a small fee enjoy the pool, sauna and hot tub. Enjoy a surf at Issac Hale Park the local surf spot and relax in geothermally heated waters at Ahalanui warm ponds. The nearby Kapoho tidal ponds will take your breath away as you snorkel in pristine waters. Visit the Hawaiian Village, just down the road, known as Uncle Roberts where you can walk out over an old lava flow to a newly forming black sand beach and drink the traditional “awa” at the Kava Bar while you chat with friendly locals. On your way out stop at the the Kalapana Cafe for a creamy Haupia (coconut) milkshake, or ono(delicious) fish burger or grab last minute necessities at the Kalapana Convenience store .
