Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 2 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-7)

The Vermillion Farm is a 60 acre escape from the world. We purchased the property in 2008 and fully renovated the vintage farmhouse. We kept all of the great vintage details, but updated it with all of the luxuries that you'd want. We have a great dining area surrounded by windows looking into the woods and across the valley.

The living area has plenty of space to relax and you can enjoy the vintage console radio. The three bedrooms have great furnishings as well, and you'll love the views from every window. The views are rolling, beautiful and seem to go on forever without another house in sight. The lower level features a great TV area with a large flat screen HDTV. We have also added a second all tile bathroom with top of the line fixtures and glass walls.

Outside, there are groomed grass trails that lead you through the woods and native wildflower prairie. Without a doubt, it's peaceful here. We've seen an abundance of wildlife and have planted a native prairie.

Drive into town in the evening for a dinner in one of the many great restaurants in Valparaiso. On Saturdays you may want to wander up to Chesterton for their outdoor Market.

Come out for a few days or a few weeks. We're sure you'll love it.

About Fred

My wife and I are both designers. I am an architect specializing in high-end residential projects and my wife is a fashion designer and singer/songwriter who spent years in New York City before settling into country life. We love to travel and are influenced by beauty both local and global. We loved creating this beautiful place and often stay here ourselves. Our objective was to make the place spare, peaceful, warm and inviting. It's great now, and we are continually adding amenities for future visits. If you like good design and the beauty of the outdoors, we think you'll love our place.

Fred purchased this house in 2008

Why Fred chose Indiana

Vermillion Farm is located near our house, and we purchased it to preserve the amazing landscape that is all around.

What makes this house unique

We have outfitted the house with all of the modern luxuries plus a great fun mix of vintage pieces. You'll feel a world away from it all. Hike on 60 acres of trails and native wood and prairie, soak in the tub, or tune in the vintage tube radio and kick back and relax. If you need to get out, we're just a short drive into Downtown Valparaiso with great restaurants, or a quick jaunt up to the dunes.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Vermillion Farm was a wonderful winter hide-a-way for our family. The

home was very clean and quaint. The bathrooms got an A+ from our

daughters! The windows afforded wonderful views of deer and the

wooded terrain. Just steps out the door and we had several great

sledding hills to ourselves! We loved the kitchen/dining area where

we spent lots of time preparing many delicious meals. Thank you for

opening your home to us and our 3 family dogs who equally enjoyed the

winter time adventure at Vermillion Farm! It was just want we

needed to re-energize ourselves for the start of the New Year!

This was a beautiful property with an older well maintained home. Farm style atmosphere with no neighbors in site. located right on the edge of town with less then 5 a minute drive to everything. The house was well equipped and has a nice garage. I plan on staying here again soon.

all good but mattresses on beds

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our stay and were reasonably comfortable. The house was cozy and warm and all appliances worked well. However the mattresses on the queen bed and two twin beds are really old and worn out. the land surrounding the house was beautiful, even in the snow.

Owner's Response: We appreciate this feedback as we’ve never had a complaint about the beds. Kids usually sleep on the twins so it was good to know that it was time to replace the twin beds. As for the queen bed, it must be a matter of taste, as we went out to some people who have stayed at the house multiple times (most recently in February) who love it. It is a Vera Wang for Serta natural latex bed on a tatami frame. Most people tell us it’s like sleeping on a cloud. However, we are seeing if we can fit a new bed in what we call “The Wood Room” and that would have a firm mattress. We do strive to make everyone’s stay as comfortable as possible!

Clean, Cozy and Wonderfully Located

  • 5 of 5

Of all the wonderful things about this property, its location and surroundings tops the list. We stayed here for reunion gathering and it couldn't have been any better. The house itself has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The grounds are great to explore and provide insulation to the outside world. It is about 5 minutes away from anything you need but you felt like you were away from it all. We kept the windows open all the time so waking up in the morning to nothing but a few birds singing was so relaxing. I would return to stay again. The owners are great and communication was quick.

Perfect Hideaway

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed here for a week while visiting Valparaiso for a family wedding. We could not have been more pleased. We had young children with us and could not have imagined a hotel situation for that long. This rental offered all of the comforts of home including our preferred lifestyle of daily walks and nature explorations, crafts and game activities for the kids, and shared family meals. We loved our time here and the owners were completely respectful of our privacy, always notifying us if they were going to be on the property. It really was a dream come true in the midst of what otherwise would have been a high stress week! Thank you for a lovely stay. We will definitely reach out to stay here again if we are in the area!

Peaceful retreat for our family vacation

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at the farmhouse with our 15-month-old son for a week this fall while in IN for a wedding and business. What an awesome house and property - perfect for our little family getaway! The house was beautiful, comfortable, and had lots of useful amenities for traveling with a toddler. The property is equally stunning. We spent a good part of each day exploring the barn area (and the cool old tractors!) and trails. The farmhouse was peaceful and quiet yet a 5-minute drive to anything we needed. On top of it all, Leslie and Fred were excellent hosts. They were welcoming, attentive, and very respectful of our privacy. We will definitely be back!

"Our" farm away from the city

  • 5 of 5

This marks our fourth summer visiting "our" farm in Valparaiso for a week. Fred and Leslie have created such a fantastic relaxed atmosphere, from the cozy home to the tree swing to the grassy walking trails lined with wild blackberries. It's the type of place where you can hear traffic but not see it, where we can let our kids run wild in the yard which they rarely can do in Chicago, where you can wake up to deer in the side yard and make s'mores every night. And it's a quick drive to downtown Valpo for dinners out and ice cream treats. The home itself is decorated with a modern-slash-retro-cabin curated style that could easily be featured in Apartment Therapy or design*sponge. Every year we enjoy coming back to see Leslie's latest improvements and vintage finds.

The Vermillion Farm is the kind of place that we wish that we could own someday. We would spend all summer at this VRBO property if we could!
