Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Marilyn,

Our family had a wonderful time, and are already talking about staying at the Lodge again next year. A special thank you for the ping pong table, which provided hours of entertainment. The commercial kitchen was also great, and of course the main gathering space with the beautiful fireplace was wonderful.

The only maintenance item I'm aware of was that one of the black chairs at the smaller dining table had a loose front leg, which seemed like it might give out if someone sat on it at the wrong angle, or a little too abruptly. Otherwise everything worked well.

Thanks again,

Rachel

Family Reunion

  • 4 of 5

Our family rented the Riverside Lodge for one week to host a family reunion. When we arrived we found it a pleasant surprise. It was mostly exactly as advertised, a large country home setting. It suited a happy family reunion perfectly. We did, however, find that the kitchen needed some updating. The ovens were rusty and one didn't work, also the dishwasher was a bit of a problem. It would have been better if we could have used ALL the appliances on site. No matter, it worked for our crowd for the most part. The rental ladies, Marilyn and Joanne, were very helpful. All in all, it makes for a good place for any occasion hosting a moderately large group of people. Being centrely located on Vancouver Island was also a plus.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the constructive feedback. We strive for continual improvement so that return guests can continue to enjoy the Riverside year after year, and in that regard the dishwasher has been promptly tended to. For clarification the ovens are Vulcan Professional Bakers series (non convection). The exterior are high polished stainless steel with a very large stainless (polished and not rusted) flat top with 6 adjacent cooking elements. There are two ovens which are true bakers ovens with stainless racks (not rusted). One is the oven and the second is a warming oven (used more for storage). With the years of use the bottom of the oven appears rusted and its surface is very worn because of the nature of its material and discoloration due to high heat and spills over time. While the oven is by no means new, we thought it would be important for readers to know the entire context of their condition and the kind of ovens they are. Thanks again from the Riverside.

A spectacular setting for an intimate wedding

  • 5 of 5

We were pleasantly surprised with how perfect this venue was given that we booked site unseen. Planning our wedding from abroad meant that we chose our venue on specifications only (it had to house all of our guests for a whole week). The lodge was beautiful (even better than the photos on the website), and a spectacular setting for our wedding. It felt very secluded and quiet but is conveniently not far from the shops in town.

The owner was very quick to respond to every email and couldn't have been more helpful with each enquiry. When we arrived we were welcomed, shown around and given clear simple instructions about all of the utilities and check out procedure. The lodge itself was clean and spacious with plenty of facilities for each of our guests.

I would highly recommend this venue as a getaway and intimate wedding venue.

Lovely spot & perfect for our wedding

  • 5 of 5

We rented the property for 1 week to accommodate our wedding/retreat and the entire experience from booking, payment, checking in, stay and checking out was truly exceptional.

The Manager (Marilyn) was very responsive during the entire process and provided helpful information about Port Alberni. She was really easy to work with and provided great customer service. The Inn Keeper (Joanne) provided a detailed orientation during check in and showed up on time for check out/inspection. The lodge is well appointed with everything you could possibly ever need during your stay. Restrooms have shampoo/body wash and towels/face clothes. Kitchen is the best part - fully stocked with every appliance, pot/pan, cutlery, tool and stemware you could imagine along with a nice big fridge & freezer. Lots of comfortable seating inside and out and the firewood/kindling is all prepped for you. The lodge is fairly well maintained inside and out and it is a short walk to the river (it has a small bank). Within 10 - 15 min drive to all major amenitites and the Beaver Creek Market down the road is very convenient for odds/ends.

I'd recommend this property to anyone looking for a casual, rustic, venue for a family reunion, corporate retreat or wedding. The only negative comments I'd share for more discerning guests are - the bed linens didn't match, there were plastic flowers/dried arrangments used throughout the lodge, there were a few dust bunnies/cobwebs in the window sills, the BBQ was dirty and needed to be cleaned before use. For us, these things didn't matter one bit because we liked the rustic appeal of the lodge but I wanted to share in case another traveller was expecting a prestine/boutique hotel type lodge.

We LOVED our stay at the Riverside Lodge and are already planning our 5 year reunion!! Lovely, magical place that is really unique and great value for the dollar.

Local shout outs - If you need a butcher, Rick at Double R Meats is great. Joanne at Taylor's Flowers was very helpful and her flowers were very high quality. I'd recommend EM Spa for any treatments and Marilyn arranged table/chair rental for us from a local supplier which were delivered on time.

All the best.

Thank you!

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for your feedback! We strive for continual improvement and with this kind of advice we can do just that. Thanks very much for your kind words and comments about the facility, staff and service. Our laundromat service and change over days fell on a closed day for our service provider. Normally they are all color co-ordinates, The BBQ and window sill dust - our fault! An oversight from our housekeeping team and we feel badly about it....our apologies. We are so glad that you enjoyed your stay and that the Riverside delivered the "magical" feel that it is well known for. We look forward to seeing you again. Warm Regards from the Team at the Riverside!
