|Minimum Stay||5 - 7 nights|
With its nearby beach, gorgeous ocean views, upscale amenities, and secluded location, it’s no wonder that Villa Mariposa is once again TripAdvisor's Top Vacation Rental for Ojochal. Again and again, our guests rave about our jungle paradise on the Costa Ballena in the Southern Zone of Costa Rica, and we’re sure you’ll fall in love with it too.
OUTDOOR LIVING AT ITS BEST!
The spacious poolside terrace is one of the villa’s best features. French doors open onto a shaded living area, a separate sun-drenched deck and stunning views of the ocean. With plenty of lounge chairs and natural breezes, it’s a restful place to savor your morning coffee, sunbathe, or get caught up in a good book. All the while, you’ll be awed by the hummingbirds, Scarlet Macaws, and incredible blue butterflies—just a few of the species that populate the tropical garden and surrounding jungle. When you’re ready for a dip, the private pool boasts scenic views of the Whale’s Tail and the coastline up to Manuel Antonio National Park. The estate is gated and completely private; there are no neighbors in sight!
GUESTS WHO LOVE OUR VILLA
This one-story villa has a natural flow to its design, and with three bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms, and an optional fourth bedroom, it provides plenty of space for extended families or several couples. It's also an amazing option for a honeymoon couple to claim as their own. The central dining and living area is flanked by two large bedrooms, including the master bedroom. Both have French doors that open onto the terrace. You’re literally steps away from the pool and you can view the ocean from most every room of the house.
The master bedroom is especially luxurious. It boasts views of the ocean and the pool, an en-suite bathroom with an oversized glass block shower, a plush queen-size bed, and a walk-in closet. You’ll feel pampered during your stay.
DESIGNED WITH ATTENTION TO DETAILS
Every detail was considered when designing Villa Mariposa and the comfort of our guests. The villa has teak-beamed cathedral ceilings, custom handmade cedar doors, cabinets and furniture, and a fully-equipped kitchen with granite countertops and stainless steel appliances. The kitchen opens onto the outdoor terrace, so you can easily dine alfresco while watching the sunset. The house was built 800 feet above sea level and is cooled by natural breezes. In addition to all this, Villa Mariposa was built in 2009 and retains the look and feel of a brand-new vacation home.
SECLUDED LOCATION CLOSE TO THE BEST BEACHES, RESTAURANTS & ACTIVITIES
When it comes to location, the villa couldn't be better situated. We’re minutes from the Coastal highway and Ventanas Beach—a virgin strip of palm tree studded sand hidden in a secluded bay. The surrounding cliffs and ocean caves add to the beauty of the area, and you can walk through the ocean caves at low tide.
The villa is also minutes from the village of Ojochal, renowned in Costa Rica for its international cuisine and world-class dining experiences in the jungle. You will find Canadian, American and European expatriates living there in a cooperative culture with the villagers. We include our restaurant recommendations for some of the best French, Italian, Thai, German, Swiss, Indonesian restaurants on our website and in the villa information binder. The binder also includes our scrumptious secret recipe for sea bass which you can prepare in the gourmet kitchen and enjoy with chilled wine on terrace overlooking the ocean.
If you’re looking for adventure, experience zip-lining or take a horseback tour through the lush rainforest to Nauyaca Falls, where you can swim in the natural pools or jump from the falls. You can also get close to tame toucans and Scarlet Macaws at Don Lulo’s home, where the tour stops for a typical Costa Rican fare. It makes for a very memorable photo op!

We are from Toronto and were looking for warm place with natural beauty and a great community of people where we could enjoy the winters and eventually retire. Like many of the world travelers who come to live here we fell in love with this remarkably unique community of Ojochal with so much to offer. We are minutes from Costa Rica’s most beautiful beaches exceptional restaurants, dramatic landscapes, impressive national parks, and activities that satisfy our sense of adventure.
Ellen purchased this house in 2009
We love our gorgeous ocean view of Ventanas beach and body surfing in the ocean there. It’s one of the most spectacular and pristine beaches in Costa Rica. We adore great food and it’s wonderful to be living minutes away from Ojochal, which is becoming the culinary center of Costa Rica, and dining out at 5 star French, Italian and Thai restaurants in the jungle.
We value our privacy and love the luxury of the private pool whether we are swimming in it, floating on it, lounging beside it or looking over it at the ocean view. It makes for a very intimate setting which is also wonderful to experience and share with good friends.
Villa Mariposa, Ojochal, Costa Rica
Even months after our week at Villa Mariposa, photos of our stay there bring back the tingle of heightened senses. That can’t be said for an all-inclusive.
When we turned off the costal highway up the steep road that led to our villa, the changing evening light added to our excitement. The higher we climbed the more I knew our Villa would be in a special place. I was right.
The property manager, Ben, met us in the courtyard, then stood back as the four of us walked through the elegant main room through to the french doors that lead to the pool terrace. There we stopped, awestruck by the impact of the surreal pink glow of the entire sky, the view clear to the ocean, the shimmering pool, and the crazy wonderful noises of creatures in the jungle surrounding us. Actually, tears welled up in my eyes. “For us?” I thought? “Just for us … for a whole week?” My job has put me in many luxurious rooms. But Villa Mariposa stands apart. Our 16 year old daughter was having the same reaction. Our 19 year old son forgot to be cool, and I could see my husband, a photographer, already sizing up the landscape. Ben was smiling, like, everyone reacts like this when they arrive.
It was all we could do to politely listen to the few instructions Ben had for us. Within seconds after he left we were splashing and giggling in the pool. And that’s pretty much how it went for the rest of the week. In the day we did all the normal Costa Rican things close by: exhilarating zip lines, muddy ATV tours for the boys, luxurious spas for the girls, clean beaches, specialty restaurants, etc. And every time we came back to the Villa, in fact, every morning waking up, we found ourselves transfixed by the patch of paradise that Bernie and Ellen have created.
Ellen and Bernie have set things up so there is nothing to do but explore the local towns to buy groceries: A fully appointed kitchen, spacious rooms, comfortable furniture in lovely colours, and beds and bedding of exceptionally good quality. Gone were the surly teenagers and pre-occupied adults. We all ate well, slept well and truly rested.
Throughout the entire week the magic of our surroundings - the quality of light, the fragrance, the busy creatures morning and evening - recharged us. Villa Mariposa counts among the loveliest places we’ve stayed.
Had a wonderful week at this Ojochal property. Perfect for our family of 6 with plenty of room for all. Spent many hours in and around the pool and on the patio. Loved looking for the toucans every evening as they made their way through the property each evening. Many birds to enjoy all around. The managers of the property were very accomidating and helped arrange tours and a meal to be brought in for our first night. Highly recommend!!
We had a great time, location was good, we loved the whole area, teenage kids had lots of activities. Property manager and owner communicated extremely well with us since day one. We felt save and had a vacation feeling the whole time.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Villa Mariposa. Three people shared the property from Oct 31 to November 12. We had plenty of space and everything we needed. There was a lot of rain during our stay so we didn't use the pool as much as would have liked but the covered patio was great so we could still spend our time outdoors when we were at the villa. The landscaping and view was beautiful. The beds were comfortable. We had to do laundry while we were there - sheets, towels, etc. as there were no extras so the onsite washer and dryer was great. The location had both pros and cons. It was quiet and secluded, which is great if that's what you're looking for but we felt a bit isolated from any night life or amenities. It was an hour to walk down the hill (or 15 min to drive on a very rough, windy road) for which there is a great restaurant with an amazing chef (Fernando) at the base of road where it meets the highway (Vista del Mar I think it was called) but no other amenities near by. It's a short drive to restaurants in Ojochal and 15 minutes to Uvita from the highway. If you go out and have a few drinks you really have to think about the sunset time (5:10 pm during our stay so very dark early evening) and the long drive back home after a night out. Or you just stay in, but that gets pretty boring after a night or two. This was the only downside during our stay. We wish we had booked a property that would have been in walking distance to amenities - beach, pubs, etc. As opposed to always having to drive 20-30 minutes one way to anything. The BM grocery markets in Uvita are decent and you may come across a pop up frutera as well. We didn't see much wildlife in and around the villa as we would have expected either. However, the area is fantastic - Quepos, Manuel Antonio Park, Dominical, Uvita, Ojochal. There were beautiful beaches, restaurants and activities. We enjoyed Ventanas beach and Manuel Antonio beaches the best. From Uvita there is a waterfall a short distance from town where you can go swimming which wasn't mentioned in any of the reviews we read at the villa. Jungle ATV tour and Osa Canopy tour were a lot of fun. It was not a good time of year for snorkelling and diving because of the rain, rough waves and poor clarity in the water. Overall it was a great trip and we hope to return again soon!
My family and I were very fortunate to spend 6 weeks at this Villa. It's a perfect set up for short term and long term renting as well! We couldn't of asked for anything better. The view we experienced each day was simply amazing PLUS from time to time we got to see the whales jump and play.. Magical gardens full of fruit, many different types of birds and butterfly's frolicking about! The location is perfect; allowing you the experience of life in a tropical rain forest while pristine beaches only minutes away! Don't miss out on the opportunity to stay and such a wonderful place..
My husband and I spent 11 days at this villa and we couldn't get enough of the view. The grounds surrounding the villa are beautiful and attract a lot of butterflies, including the blue morphos. The villa was as pictured and location was perfect. A four-wheel drive vehicle is a must to get to it, but it's worth it. The best restaurants in Costa Rica (in our opinion) are less than 30 minutes from the villa - Exotica, Citris, Lookout, House of Ginger and more. You're also within 30 - 60 minutes of some of the best tours - ATV tour, whale watching, Sierpe (taking a boat from there to hike in Corcovado National Park), hiking in Piedras Blancas, whales tail, white water rafting, zip lining, snorkeling, canyoning and repelling, and for the non-adventurous, a small reptile zoo and several beaches. This is our third trip to the Ojochal area and I'm sure there will be fourth.
The Costa Ballena, on the south Pacific coast is renowned for its dramatic landscapes where the mountains meet the ocean. This is the real Costa Rica with the gorgeous and secluded Ventanas Beach only 10 minutes from the Villa Mariposa and the village of Ojochal with international restaurants and all the amenities all within 15 minutes. Located 30 minutes south of Dominical and 25 minutes north of the Palmar Sur airstrip on the picturesque and well paved Costanera highway. You can fly into the international airport in San Jose and drive or take a 30-minute scenic flight over the mountains and along the coast to Palmar Sur airstrip. From there we can arrange to have a 4x4 rental waiting for you and then drive the 25 minutes to Villa Mariposa. There are more daily flights to Quepos, only 1 hours drive to the villa. Alternatively, with the recent competition of the new Caldera highway to the Pacific coast many guests drive the 2.5 to 3 hours, not including stops for the amazing views, on newly paved highway or take a private VIP shuttle from San Jose Airport. A 4x4 is strongly recommended for access to the villa and the beaches. For a complete map and insiders guide to the Southern Zone inquire or visit our website link at the bottom of this listing.
