The romance of a classic knotty pine beach cottage with white water ocean and beach views far up the Sonoma Coast is available at The Beach Cottage. This very warm, cozy and somewhat quirky cottage is decorated in authentic vintage 'beach'; colorful, joyful and fun. Bask in the views of sand, surf and Salmon Creek where it meets the sea. Watch the sun set on the ocean from your front row seat by the (gas) fireplace. Get lost in the ocean’s symphony as it crashes to shore. You can take a 5 minute stroll to the beach through our tiny hamlet on narrow streets filled with wonderful old beach houses. Take a few moments as you walk by Salmon Creek to feed the geese. Go beach combing or tide pool exploring. The kitchen has everything necessary to create dinners of fresh seafood from the marina. Or go out to eat...there are several wonderful local restaurants. To do or not to do...that's the question at The Beach Cottage!!
Important Note:: Please be aware that dogs are not allowed on Salmon Creek beach in order to protect the Snowy Plover, an endangered local bird. However, dogs on leash ARE allowed on the following beaches, Doran (a safe, fun place for both children and pets), Bodega Dunes, just south of Salmon Creek, Wrights Beach and Portuguese Beach, both just a very short drive north of Salmon Creek. Also, doggies ARE allowed off leash in the dunes right here around the village where they can run and run and chase all those things real and imaginary that dogs like to chase.
For local art try Ren Brown Gallery in Bodega Bay or Hand Goods in Occidental. For the best bread you've ever had stop in at Wild Flour in Freestone, about 15 minutes inland through the delightful town of Bodega (where Alfred Hitchcock filmed 'The Birds').
Local Restaurants: For clam chowder you can't beat Spud Point Crab Co. on Eastshore Rd by the marina. Our best local restaurant for intimate dining, excellent food and delightful owners is Terrapin Creek Cafe. Bluewater Bistro at the clubhouse in Bodega Harbour has great views and Thursday night jazz. The Duck Club (Bodega Bay Lodge & Spa) on the way out to Doran Beach has a terrific menue in the main dining room or try the happening Drakes Lounge Bar area. On Friday nights the local wine shop, Gourmet au Bay, has happy hour so come enjoy some wine or beer while you sit on the back deck and enjoy the best harbor view and picture perfect sunsets.
If you like to get outside there's so much to do...if you prefer to hunker down in a cozy cottage there are lots of books and games to keep you occupied. However you spend your time at The Beach Cottage you'll leave relaxed and eager to return.
We are an artist and a general contractor who have been living and working in the Bodega Bay area for over 19 years.
Diana Bundy purchased this cottage in 2004
We chose this property mostly because it's across the street from our permanent residence which makes it perfect for our families to visit with all the grand children. We've lovingly upgraded the home but have been careful to maintain its unique beachy-ness and vintage, warm feel.
This cottage was everything as described, and more! I felt at home as soon as we stepped in. Quaint, cozy and comfortable.
I really appreciate the pricing the owners have set. You don't have to be a millionaire to rent a beach cottage :)
Also, they give a discount if you bring our own linens, making it even more affordable. And their allowance of dogs was so nice, I loved having our pup there with us to enjoy our ocean weekend.
I will, and already have, recommend this cottage experience to all my friends, family and everyone who reads this review.
My husband and I want to thank you VERY much Diana. You have done an amazing job with your cottage :)
The cottage is cozy and comfortable. I think it is perfect for two adults ( a couple) and maybe two small children. The second bedroom is really a sleeping alcove with no door and no floor space apart from the double bed mattress which rests on a board. The kitchen is well equipped, (bring your own fry pan) with the necessities, including a good toaster oven and microwave. I loved the living room with a cozy couch and two comfortable rattan chairs. It looks out on a small fenced yard, deck, and in the distance, salmon creek and the ocean. A half block from the cottage there is a quiet, flat , smooth ,walking path that goes towards the town of Bodega Bay for a mile , which ends at a Mexican restaurant . The dogs and I loved this walk. Salmon Creek is a quiet community about 2 miles from the town. It has no traffic and no businesses. The beach looked lovely but no dogs are allowed on the beaches of Salmon Creek The cottage was clean and homey. It even had a small flat screened TV and cable service for viewing as well as a DVD/CD player with many old movies. I plan to come back soon.
We come to this wonderful cottage every year, our next dates are coming up in September. I can't imagine a more perfect cottage that says "hey, I'm here at the beach!" I do strongly disagree with the previous reviewer; he/she must have been in a very bad mood when writing that.
For me (and my husband) the cottage has everything we could ask for: comfortable, artistic furnishings, well-equipped open kitchen, plenty of seating, views to the Salmon Creek and Pacific Ocean (white water views), a back deck and yard with ocean views. Without feeling in the least bit crowded, the cottage offers 2 very separate bedrooms, each with a double or queen bed. The bathroom is roomy and cute as can be. The owners are very friendly and always responsive to their guests needs. Can't wait to get back there next month, with our "Fido", who is always welcome too.
We made a reservation for 4 nights in July but we stayed 3 nights and forfeited the 4th day/night due to our dislike of this cabin. We also cut it short because we could not leave our adult dog alone in the cabin so we were confined but we had agreed to this ahead of time so we take responsibility for that decision. This is a very SMALL cabin – maybe 700 - 750 square feet. It is a very visually “busy” with an enormous amount of clutter, knickknacks so it was not soothing with all this stuff everywhere on walls, shelves etc. However, what really forced us out was the furniture as relaxing proved to be impossible as no seating was comfortable for relaxation purposes. (Wicker chairs are notoriously uncomfortable and the one loveseat needs to be tossed out.) Also, a previous visiting pet appears like it had thrown up in the far corner of the living room and the cleaning crew had neglected to see this. (We did report this to the owner.) If the weather is cold and you want to watch a movie, there is a tiny television with satellite. There is no Internet, no telephone, no laundry. The view of the ocean is visible, weather permitting. But, next to the view of that ocean is a very battered/ugly fence and 2 broken, pink plastic flamingoes lying on the ground. The backyard is unpleasant in appearance due to lack of care/ missing aesthetics. The front bedroom is tiny and has a double bed and a tiny table with a lamp. There is no way to “walk” to the closet because the room is so small you have to crawl over the end of the bed to get to the closet. There is no door on that bedroom. The larger bedroom has a door but is also small and it is also very hard to get to the closet due to crowding. There was no place for suitcases. The kitchen is so small only one person can walk in. There is no dishwasher. The bathroom is fairly large but there is an old rusted sink and the faucet makes a loud screeching noise. The bathroom window is dirty. The shower is tiny (not large as stated in the description) and there is no ventilation so there is mildew in the shower. The light switches are in odd places. If you are looking for comfort/relaxation and your desire is traveler-friendly enhancements and an aesthetically pleasing space where you feel nurtured this might not be the place for you. The two stars are for the ocean view, and the walking trail at the end of the street plus the clean towels and sheets the owner will provide for an extra charge.
This relaxing, comfortable beach house was the perfect size for four people. The location couldn't have been better. There was a beautiful ocean view from the living room and a sweet little back yard to BBQ.
The owner was so sweet and inviting.
It's a short walk to Salmon Creek beach. One of the most beautiful beaches in the area. There is a new bike/walking trail the begins at the end of the block and goes to the Community Center. An easy ride/walk.
I can't wait to go back!!
My fiancé, our dog and I stayed at this piece of heaven over the weekend. I will try to put into words how it calmed our souls. The view from the back deck is amazing. We star gazed, watched the birds, and just listened to the heartbeat of the ocean. I am currently going through rigorous chemo treatments for cancer, so this was a much needed break from the regular day to day schedule. Diana and Michael were very warm and accommodating. Diana is an amazing stained glass artist and seeing her gift all over salmon beach is exciting. If you want a place where you can unplug from the electronic world we live in... this is the spot. I am so thankful they have opened their home to the world to enjoy. Thank you so much... Kelli and Don.
Strolling to the beach is a delightful walk thru an unspoiled, vintage beach hamlet without a highway between you and the ocean. You can beach comb for miles along the coast. The Beach Cottage is quiet and peaceful where you can hear the ocean and shore birds calling. Sit on the new rear deck and watch exquisite sunsets or sit on the front deck and watch the sunrise over the hills to the east. Ahhh, life at the beach....
