Mendocino House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-4)

This 1860's home is large and comfortable. Although rustic, beds are all new and very comfortable, and it is one of the only homes in the entire area with a path directly to the beach from the large back yard.

Great for a couples or a family. Everything is within walking distance, including coffee, restaurants, ice cream, two beaches, whale watching, live theater, shops and site seeing.

For that true needed relaxation the Mendocino beach house is the place. Just watch the waves from your deck as you drink some local wine, have a picnic lunch, or take a walk down the special beach path and explore the caves and look for shells and sea glass. Rented only once a month. Great for 4 weeks or more!

Guestbook comments from the owner

The Mendocino beach house was in an amazing location, we walked to everything in town and through the backyard down to the beach. We could see and hear the ocean from the house. There wasn't a dedicated driveway/garage available, but an area in front of the front yard's fence where several cars would be able to park. Although we did not meet anyone in person at the house, you can feel the history of it being a favorite family getaway house for many years just by walking inside. For us, that was a positive -- lots of interesting artifacts, eclectic lamps, antique appliances, older dvd and board games, even old records, and yes art, filled it with charm and lent a homey, lived-in vibe. I wouldn't call it cluttered, but a minimalist might be uncomfortable with the plethora of driftwood on the patio. I felt totally at ease with many memories of my own childhood beach trips! The kitchen and 2 bathrooms are small with older amenities but fully functional. Life in the house definitely centers around the large living room with a fireplace, large back porch, and huge backyard with a firepit. We spent several hours there just looking at stars :) The house felt like it could handle a big family but I think because of plumbing and the drought the owner prefers to limit guests. Overall, we had a wonderful time and definitely hope to return to stay here again.

A magical summer

  • 5 of 5

We rented the beach house for 2 magical months, summer 2016. There are views from every room in the house. The location is perfect, walking distance to everything in Mendocino. There is a path right from the backyard to the beach. The house has plenty of room and a relaxed atmosphere. I would definitely stay here again

Historic and artsy retreat!

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay in this historic cottage by the sea! The house is filled with artistic expression both inside and out . There lots of wonderful windows that make it feel light and airy and offer pleasant views of the sea and yard . The beds were comfortable and we had everything we needed for a wonderful time. Thank you Gary for sharing this special place.we would definitely recommend this to a friend. It is a old gem of a house . Great for those who appreciate a home with old house charm. Wonderful path down to the water too...and walking distance to everything.

Very thankful I stumbled upon this treasure.

  • 5 of 5

First, I want to say that the owner Gary and his son were awesome and thank you both for an unforgetable experience in such beautiful place. The home was one of the oldest houses in Mendocono, situated right at the beginning of Main street! But not so you can see any crowdscor anything. What a treat to be able to walk "home" from the Mendocino hotel after a wonderful meal. Or anywhere in town for that matter. It was in a very quiet place where you can hear the waves and smell the Ocean. But even better, down a well maintained and easy path to one of the best beaches I have ever had the pleasure of seeing. It is the mouth of the Big river feeding into the ocean, so you have both the Ocean and a piece of the river to enjoy. Very few people were ever there, and its so huge I never felt like it was not a private beach! I even got to watch a pod of Dolfins one day right off shore feeding on a school of small fish. The sunsets were so beautiful. And the stars at night! Wow! I saw a meteor hit the earths atmosphere and/or "shooting stars" every single night of my stay...never knew there were so many stars! They seemed so huge too, and the moon seemed twice its normal size! The sun shone bright each morning through the large sliders and warmed up the house so toasty, allowing lots of light to pour through. The charming room upstairs with the dormer windows looking out to the ocean on one side, the quaint church steeple on the other was my favorate. The COZIEST loveseat on the planet was my favorate place to read and doze off in the afternoon. Oh! and in the front windows, an historic cemetary...added an awesome touch one night during a quick unexpected thunderstorm. Haha.

I dont want to spoil the surprise, but will just say that if you rent this home there are at least a couple hundred amazing surprises that make this a very special home that was filled with love and happy times. It is apparent everywhere you go. The very large backyard has REAL secret gardens, full of enchantment for my six year old niece. She will remember this home and our stay fondly for the rest of her life I am sure. As will I.

Five Weeks of Heaven

  • 5 of 5

We always escape to mendocino, but finding a long term rental is hard to find. This home is specifically set up this way. We stayed for 5 weeks, and wish we could stay longer. Took a couple of workshops at the art center, walked to the beach, went to the farmer market, read a book, napped a lot, and watched the ever changing scenery. We tried out all the sitting benches located throughout the yard and enjoyed everyone one of them. Can't wait to come back next year.

Great location - Fabulous and Funky

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful location for a vacation get-away. It is a 3-minute walk to more than a dozen restaurants, and you will love the gorgeous view from the back deck, with a hidden path that leads you to the beach. The entire house is filled with art, and you will feel like it's your own home after a few days of relaxing and sightseeing. If you are looking for fancy, you can find newer homes in a different town, but if you want to relax and enjoy a beautiful and comfortable home in the perfect location, look no further. This property is even better in person. We loved our visit and will come back next year for sure. Thanks!
