I loved this house. It has a great open feel whether you're downstairs are upstairs in the loft type master bedroom. It was so quiet and felt secluded.
The pool was heated, which was great since one of the days we were there was too cool for a beach day.
The huge screened in porch has a big table and chairs where we would have our meals.
I noticed in the review above that they had issues with the TV which we never did. Kids enjoyed movies and shows whenever they wanted. While it did say not to use the fireplace, I don't understand why you would since it's summertime.
We will definitely be staying there again.
Overall we enjoyed our stay here because of the pool and the Union Pier location; however, we were disappointed in the condition of the house. The house is in much need of repair - and not just because it is a cottage. There were many easy things to fix that just haven't received the attention they need - the screened in porch and every screen door had a ripped screen, light bulb covers were missing, a cabinet face was missing, there were dirty and missing blinds on windows, there was an exposed rusty screw where gate was missing, and we had to call to have the refrigerator light replaced, shower liner replaced and ant problems addressed (to which they were very responsive). The balcony on the second floor had spindles that were very far apart so we couldn't use the balcony because we feared for the safety of our two kids. There was also little privacy. The "master" has no door to the room or to the bathroom - so don't count on having any privacy while you take a jacuzzi bath or use the master bathroom. One of the other rooms has a glass door and a see-through fireplace. Speaking of the fireplaces, while they advertise the fireplaces, it is clear that you are not allowed to use them. Another issue is the TV. There is a Dish Network system which is certainly finicky in bad weather but even on clear days it struggled to get any more than 3 or 4 channels and those 3 or 4 were not consistent. This means you essentially have no TV available during your stay. Finally, the walk to the beach is more than 2 blocks - while there may only be one stop sign, the distance is more like 4 blocks and easily a 10 minute walk for adults. Certainly doable, but something to consider especially if you have young children and a lot to carry.
Union Pier is located in the center of eight quaint lakeside towns that make up an area known as Harbor Country. Often referred to as the 'Hamptons of the Midwest', Harbor Country is a highly acclaimed tourist destination and second home market which in recent years has been a direct target market of the highly visible 'Pure Michigan' multimedia advertising campaign. Harbor Country is romantic and picturesque with miles of sandy unspoiled beaches, majestic sand dunes, pristine forests and acres of vineyards. The towns are quaint and family friendly and are populated year round by a mix of locals, second home owners and visitors. Local shops, art galleries and antique stores appeal to the sophisticated collector and the casual shopper alike. Union Pier is approximately 75 minutes from downtown Chicago, 40 minutes from South Bend, IN and 3 1/2 hours from Detroit.
Other Activities: Harbor Country is home to numerous award winning wineries and restaurants shich regularly offer tours and tastings. Outdoor activities include golf, boating, kayaking, swimming, fishing, bicycling, hiking, antiquing, cross country skiing, ice skating and snowmobiling.
