This two-bedroom/two-bath villa on a hillside overlooking Cruz Bay is the perfect location for watching the yachts and sailboats cruise in and out of the bay. Owned by a sea captain, the house features stunning sunset views across Pillsbury Sound to St. Thomas. An extensive network of decks down to the pool level offers multiple opportunities for socializing or privacy.

A five-minute walk takes you past the gourmet grocery store and into town for shopping and fine dining. A five-minute drive takes you to the first of a string of gorgeous National Park beaches.

Captain’s View is the perfect St. John accommodation for one or two couples. The two king bedrooms have private baths; they’re air conditioned and equipped with satellite TV. You can stay connected with high-speed WifF (most of the time!).

About BJ

Ten years after sailing my classic ocean racer to the Virgin Islands, I bought what was at that time a plywood cabin on a sparsely populated hill above Cruz Bay, the main port of entry on St. John. St. John is arguably the finest Caribbean island with beautiful beaches and fabulous views. Since then, the house has grown into a wonderful rental property with incredible views of the harbor, sound and St. Thomas in the distance. Sunsets are incomparably beautiful and the morning water colors are shades of turquoise that are hard to believe. The convenience of walking just minutes to the grocery store or to restaurants and shopping in town, plus the privacy of being at the end of a little road, surrounded by undeveloped land, equals the perfect vacation retreat. I'm sure you will love it as much as I do!

Why BJ chose Cruz Bay

The incomparable view of the harbor, the stunning sunsets, the early morning palette of blues, would sell this location alone. Add to that the privacy of a dead-end road and the five minute walk into town, and you have the perfect spot for a vacation house.

Evening meals on the verandah, with the breeze coming down the undeveloped hillside, the twinkle of lights on St. Thomas, the wafting of Caribbean music from town, all make Captain's View a great place to stay.

Never expecting to return to the same destination, we have now spent 15 years enjoying BJs accomodations at both Harbor View and Captains View. Captains View offers a spectacular view of Cruz Bay and St. Thomas, magnificent sunsets, great for relaxing breakfastsand chill out evenings. Centrally located, within walking distance of shopsand restaurants. The interior is spacious, spotless, with a beautiful decor. We cannot wait for our next stay.

Amazing rental, perfect location, outstanding service!

We stayed at Captain's View for 14 glorious days in Feb 2015! This is our second visit to St. John, third rental, and we will never stay anywhere else from now on! This is it! We rented a Jeep at STT and got a bulk of our groceries before we left St. Thomas, but the location is so close to the center of town that you wouldn't need to. In fact, the tenants who stayed in the lower unit did not. Dolphin market is less than a 5 minute walk away. The location is close enough to town, yet far enough away from all the activity that it felt safe and it was surprisingly quiet! The unit was very well stocked from a large stock of towels, beach chair, flash lights, coolers, grill, ipod/iphone speaker hook up (we used pandora the whole time), and binoculars (which provided hours of harbor watching entertainment), and a perfectly timed mid-stay maid service. The two bedrooms were very spaceous and the a/c units were perfect! I had read other reivews that the a/c units weren't sufficent, but they actually worked great for us. The beds were firm and very comfy (my husband is a mattress stickler and he approved!). We ate breakfast and dinner on the covered porch everyday. We saved all our shopping bags and bagged the ice from the ice maker, packed fresh fruit, sandwiches, snacks, and beers in the cooler for a full day of adventures everyday. When we returned to Captain's View, we turned on the a/c in the bedrooms, jumped in the pool, and enjoyed cooking in the open kitchen (didn't feel secluded from the rest), grilling and dining with a fantastic view on the covered patio. Lastly, the service was outstanding! There was a window that didn't shut and I wanted to inform them in the beginning so they didn't think we broke it, and the next day they were ready to send someone out. We had a couple old broken beach chairs and they replaced them the next morning. Lastly, we forgot a phone at the house and the next day, they emailed to say they found it and were going to send it. Supurb!

We loved our stay in Captain's View

Wonderful place to stay with spectacular view of Cruz Bay with St. Thomas in the distance. The home has everything we needed to make our stay comfortable. It is an easy walk to the restaurants and stores of downtown Cruz Bay. It is in a quiet neighborhood. It is much more affordable than most of the condos in Cruz Bay. The staff in BJ's office are wonderful and very helpful. We will definitely return.

St. John Cruz bay

April into May 2014.. This is our 7 or 8 time in captains view, we love it here. We come in May and dec. love the covered deck and awesome views and awesome sunsets! Very close to town and the market. Always have felt very safe here. Like our second home. BJ is great she is very nice and will do all she can to make your stay great. She has become a great friend Thur the yrs. the new pool is great. Great views great house and close to town. Would highly recommend. Linda and Rick from Spartanburg sc

Ideal in every way

My daughter and I shared a somewhat last-minute mother-daughter vacation in St. John, and were fortunate enough to find a rare vacancy at Captain's View. We felt SO lucky--this spacious two-bedroom was both elegant and comfortable, convenient and quiet. Every morning we ate breakfast on the wide porch overlooking the bay; the kitchen was very well equipped and we could have eaten there, but we wanted to sample the local restaurants..... We never felt the need to rent a car (neither of us loves driving, especially on the "wrong" side of the road); taxis are easily available to any part of the island, and we spent most days hiking or in the water. The walk to town was quick and easy; and yes, the walk back up (especially the last few feet) was demanding--but I'm a 70-year-old with mildly arthritic knees, and I made it with no problems--probably good for me! BJ, the owner, graciously drove us to the ferry on our last morning. I'm determined to make it back someday, and I don't want to stay anywhere else!

Excellent view and value

You can't beat the location of this villa. It's just minutes from everything in town. And the views are outstanding. The driveway is steep but nothing that anyone coming to this adventure-filled island should be concerned about (but folks with disabilities would find this difficult).

Unbeatable location and views

We have visited St. John a number of times and knew we wanted to stay close to the restaurants and night life of Cruz Bay. Captains View was the perfect choice. Not only were we able to walk to town but we had probably the best view from our balcony. It was a treat to watch the town wake up in the morning while enjoying a coffee on the deck. Later in the day the activity of day charter boats jockeying by customs was entertaining and the sunsets were fantastic. The walk to and from town was manageable as long as you are in reasonable shape and helped to work off some of the extra calories we enjoyed at the restaurants. There is lots of room at Captains View and the amenities are not luxurious but certainly more than adequate. Because of the location we were able to eliminate the car rental and made do with the Vitran bus, taxis and day trip on the water. We will definitely stay at Captains View on our future visits.
