|Minimum Stay||3 - 7 nights|
Our lakefront home provides a perfect place to leave your worries behind. Fish, float, swim, eat and enjoy sunsets in our tranquil country setting, then take a short ride to Ludington or Pentwater to enjoy the amenities of these quaint towns. Our home is much more than a place to sleep between excursions on your vacation. Many guests find that our home *is* their vacation and spend days just on the property. The only complaint is that the stay was 'just too short!'
Standard Ammenities: We try to provide you with everything you need to have a worry-free vacation! Linens-- Included, Towels -- Included, Dish Soap, Laundry Soap, Trash bags... Included! The watercraft are all included. We do not expect you to clean the toilets or windows-- we do that!
The kitchen is fully equipped with Kitchen Aid pots and pans and Cuisinart cutlery. We have cookie sheets, casserole dishes, measuring cups, a mixer, a blender, a toaster, etc.. If you would expect to have it at home, we have tried to provide it here too! Please let us know if we have missed anything during your stay!
The Lake: Hopkins Lake is about 1 mile long and 1/4 mile wide-- 80 acres or so. There are 41 steps down to the water's edge then the beach gracefully falls into the lake with no drop-offs until it is well over your head. We provide life preservers for young and old. The lake bottom is sandy, with a layer of plant debris that is a bit weird between your toes (it is a lake, after all). The water is clear and you can see the bottom for over ten feet when the sun is shining. It can get a little murky if you thrash around enough. The lake has no public access, which makes it a very quiet lake. The fishing is great-- bring your own pole and tackle, and you will find bass, perch, bluegill, pike and bullnose.
The Area: We are just 10 minutes from Ludington beaches, and about 15 minutes from Pentwater. Both towns offer great shopping, dining and charter fishing. Ludington has major shopping like WalMart, Meijer, Lowes and Walgreens. Michigan Adventure is about 45 minutes South, Silver lake dune rentals is about 25 Minutes South, and the Little River casino is about 40 Minutes North.
Our family of six enjoyed a wonderful long weekend at the Canfield’s home this summer. It was truly a home away from home – and so much more restful! When we walked in, hungry and tired, we found snacks on the table and a note welcoming us. All weekend we appreciated the special little touches they left. We loved being able to boat around the lake in the different crafts provided. We spent most of our time at their house or on the lake, but we did spend an afternoon on the beach at Ludington State Park about 15 minutes away. The city beach looked really nice, too, but we wanted something a little more private. The State Park beach was beautiful – clean and quiet – a pleasant surprise since we live near the cloudy waters of Lake St. Clair in the southeast part of the state. It was so nice to be away from the hustle and bustle of the big city. People were very friendly, and it was fun to see little roadside stands out in front of people’s houses on the road to town. We even bought some maple syrup from a family that made it! Our stay was a special time for our family to relax together and we hope to visit the Canfields again.
Our family of 4 (boys 11yrs and 3yrs) stayed for 5 nights and wish we could have stayed longer! The owners provide so many basic necessities (condiments, coffee filters, bath towels and beach towels, even laundry detergent) making it so convenient!! Everything was very clean and organized. The couches and beds were very comfortable including fans in each room. Tons of toys for all ages and a pool table. They even provide Netflix! 3 decks make for tons of places to have coffee or cocktails and enjoy the great view! We enjoyed the paddle boat and the kayak the most ( canoes are also included) Our boys loved fishing off the dock while I loved watching and reading magazines. I'm not exaggerating when I say that when we told our boys we were going into town, they were not happy!! They wanted to stay at the lake house our WHOLE vacation! This lake house truly was our vacation destination providing us relaxation, activity and peacefulness all at the same time!
Great location - within easy drive of Pentwater (cute, touristy town), Ludington (great food and services in a small town), and Silver Lake (driving Jeeps on the dunes and renting wave runners for the lake). Our family picked up the sport of disc golf and played at a couple of the Mason County courses (within a few miles) and drove to Shelby to play at Flip Park - one of the premier disc golf courses in the country. We climbed to the top of Little Sable Point lighthouse, played miniature golf, drove go-karts, ate great food, and just had a relaxing time. The home is in great condition and had plenty of room for our family of five (three older teens). The view from the master bedroom was wonderful - lake view that was great to go to sleep to and wake up to the next morning. The available boats made exploring this smaller private lake enjoyable. The only two concerns some might have - noise from a nearby highway and only one full bath. The noise really didn't bother us (intermittent and only heard with all doors and windows open) and we managed fine with one shower throughout the week. The pool table in the basement got lots of use - a great bonus for our kids. All in all, one of the places we've visited that is definitely on our "would return" list. We recommend Luciano's for the best pizza we've had since leaving NY. House of Flavors offers amazing ice cream. Sportman's Irish Pub, Redolencia coffee shop, Kilwin's, Jamesport Brewing Company, and Country View Bakery (all in Ludington) were big hits with the entire family. Owners were responsive and a pleasure to deal with! Definitely recommend!
Great time at the lake! The house was roomy, bright, clean and filled with everything you need, including dishes, charcoal briquettes as well as gas in the gas grill, condiments in the fridge, and laundry detergent for the washer! We loved the Fooze-ball combo table, the pool table, and the exercise equipment in the basement. We had fun in the row boat, and our dog loved chasing sticks in the water. A great view of the lake from all 3 decks. Great star-gazing too! It's really a great deal with all the little comforts and extras. We also had a great time exploring Ludington and Pentwater.
My family and I had a wonderful week at the cabin. We were first-time renters and anxious that all would go well, so many horror stories out there. Happy to report that the descriptions and photos provided for Canfield Cabin are very accurate. Everything was clean and included many extras that really allowed us to sit back and enjoy our time there. For example there were lots of towels, condiments in the refrigerator, dish and laundry soaps, lots of dishes/pans, etc. Also the mud room was so handy to be able to keep all our golf equipment and beach stuff in, keeping the inside areas clean. Wish I had one at home!
We spent many days at nearby beaches, fishing on the lake with the boats provided, golfing, and especially relaxing on the deck with its wonderful view and nice breezes. Only one rainy day but we just headed downstairs for a couple of pool games and watched a DVD. Mostly took advantage of the kitchen but did love the PMSteamers restaurant in town.
My favorite part about the property was the layout. We have a 3 year old and also had a 4 year old and 9 month old visit us. The deck spaces are gated in various areas allowing the kids to run virtually free while providing some limitations. The downstairs area gave them lots of inside room to spread out their toys away from the grown-ups. And there is a half door that can be closed on the main floor to the stairs leading down that allowed us to let the baby crawl around freely/safely. A great setup for families with children!
Spectacular views of the lake! There's no better way to start the day than looking out the many windows overlooking the lake. We enjoyed our perfect vacation at the Canfield's; fishing, boating, kayaking, grilling, hanging out on the decks. My son caught a 25" pike and 18" large mouth bass. Even on the rainy days, we were completely entertained with the games in the house (pool, foosball, table tennis, watching tv.) I think the kids had the most fun just running up and down the stairs! Within minutes of Ludington State Park sand dunes and miles of beach along Lake Michigan.
We will definately be back and recommend to our friends and family.
Ludington is a popular destination because of its incredible beaches, quaint downtown, 1800's architecture and the amazing small town feel. You won't mind the long line for ice cream at the House of Flavors, because you feel like a part of something much bigger than yourself. You will marvel that so many people come out each day to see the Badger come and go, and as you walk the pier at sunset you will be planning your return trip and making a mental list of who you will bring along.
