About the property

Cottage, 1 Bedroom , 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2), North Shore Retreat

A guest comment says it best. 'If you want a beautiful hideaway, this is it!! The grounds are wonderful, like a private park. Its quiet, relaxed and absolutely a wonderful retreat. Close to the main road yet far enough away so you never hear traffic, beaches a mile or so away and many good restaurants as well as grocery stores nearby. We liked it so much we extended our stay and will always cherish the memories of our time there. Truly a place of the “aloha spirit.”' - Guest comment

Imagine a vacation set in the magnificent North Shore of Kauai, on two private acres, in a bright and airy cottage, and convenient location. Plan a day trips or short drive, pack the chairs, towels and cooler bag. Drive about half a mile to reach the main road and you are on your way! When it is time to return "home", come through the entrance, up the drive and to your Kauai cottage with full view of the gardens, a private hot tub, a gas grill for preparing a meal, and a private lanai. Check the night stars or walk to the end of the property to peak at the water. The only house rules are: park by the cottage, be respectful of neighbors, and be kind to the environment. You will find what you need for relaxing, cooking and even a smart TV if you like.

Hale Kokio is at the end of a quiet country road, on two private acres bordered by mature plantings. As soon as you arrive on the grounds, you realize that you are in paradise. Hale Kokio is the perfect setting for your Hawaiian holiday, be it a honeymoon, special occasion or well deserved getaway.

The cottage is bright and airy with an open floor plan. Enjoy the lanai, featuring a private hot tub. The fully equipped kitchen is well outfitted for those who wish to prepare meals.

The two acres surrounding the house are yours to explore. You will find tropical gardens, a beautiful night sky, or a comfortable shaded spot to lounge under the monkey pod trees. Enjoy spectacular views of the sunset from the property.

Hale Kokio is perfect for North Shore activities while remaining a convenient distance to points East and South. Start your day with a trip to Kilauea Town and its bakery, general store, 'healthy hut' or other fun shops. Three beaches are within a 5 minute drive. Anini Beach is just ten minutes away. Hanalei, with famous bay beach, vintage plantation architecture, and eclectic shops is just a little further north. Continue further to Haena, tunnels and a look at Bali Hai. Find the trailhead off Ke'e Beach for a great hike.

Numerous white sandy beaches, Larsen's, Pilaa, Secret Beach, Anini, and Rock Quarry(Kahili), are within ten minutes from Hale Kokio. Be sure to grab the beach towels, chairs and snorkling equipment that we provide.

About Eleanor (NY) Rob (Kauai)

Our family is interested in gardening, fishing, photography and music and generally being near the ocean. In our travels, we discovered Kauai is perfect for these activities. Some family members call Kauai home, others of us visit as often as we can. Our community is welcoming, lifestyle is simple and the beauty of the island abundant. What more can we ask for, walks on the beach, cultivating our gardens, sharing harvests with friends, music by the fire, preparing meals of fresh fish and local produce.

Eleanor (NY) Rob (Kauai) purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Eleanor (NY) Rob (Kauai) chose Kauai

We visited Kauai a number of times before our decision to purchase Hale Kokio in 2006. The property was in the perfect location, showcased the natural beauty of the North Shore in a neighborhood that was developing in authentic island style.

The grounds were so pretty and the design was perfect for additional planting and cultivation. We all decided that this was just the right place for us.

What makes this cottage unique

Hale Kokio is private, comfortable and welcoming. We handle all aspects of your stay, adding a personal touch. We know the island well, have family in Kauai and are happy to share what we know about the island.

Our private hot tub is a much appreciated feature. Views of the sunset from the grounds are an extra special experience. The night sky is amazing

Beautiful and Calm

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our seven night stay. The grounds are impeccable and the trees were in full bloom; we had constant access to freshly picked tangerines! The cottage is cozy, comfortable and has everything you might need to stay comfortably. All you need is to pick up some food and you are set. The outside Jacuzzi is heavenly. After a long day of hiking it was a welcome reward to soak in the tub. The location is awesome and it is so peaceful and tranquil (except for chickens but you can't get away from those anywhere!) We would totally book here again.

Comfortable stay on beautiful property.

  • 5 of 5

We loved our 7-night stay. Upon our arrival we discovered a gift of fresh fruit and tropical flowers. The house is very clean and had everything we needed. The deck is lovely and comfortable, with a great view of the garden. Our host, Rob, gave me a tour of the grounds and showed me all of his tropical fruit trees. I have a background in floristry and plant science and enjoyed the beautiful gardens very much. There are many beautiful birds in the yard as well. The only improvement would be a more comfortable bed, or at least a memory foam topper. I woke up very achy every day due to the uncomfortable mattress. I know that the host, Rob, is very interested in making the house comfortable and in making improvements. A new hot tub was delivered while we were there. I would love to stay here again sometime.

Owner's Response: We greatly appreciate your review. Thank you for your generous review of Hale Kokio and your remarks about the gardens. Great to know that with your trained eye that you enjoyed our efforts. We focus on organic gardens and sustaninable practices. We listen to suggestions for improvement and address those as soon as is practical. This means we will address the comfort of the bed. By the way, the new hot tub is up and running. We will be watching the new border of hibiscus also - as you are likely aware they will grow quickly in this island paradise. We look forward to yur return to Hale Kokio in the near future. Mahalo

Romantic and charming Cottage in Kauai

  • 4 of 5

We are nature lovers and not very attracted by all inclusive resorts with all the noise and traffic that come with them. We have found our little paradise at Eleonor and Rob's house. It was as the photos and the written description and even more. There was a lot of fruit trees on the property and we were allowed to pick some: grapefruits, avocados so good when we arrived from one of our treks. The house is strategically well situated: not far from groceries if you decide to cook some of your meals, and restaurants. Not far from some good swimming beaches as well as the Kolalau Trail and tunnels. We felt very secured and the spa was appreciated. Rob and Lisa were friendly and ready to help us in any way. We recommend the property without any hesitation.

Amazing! Beautiful! Romantic! Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

As we drove up to the property I was filled with so much excitement I felt like a little kid getting presents on her birthday, clapping my hands and saying "yay"! I was amazed by how beautiful the property was and the perfect cottage that was hidden in a tropical forest that included flowers, fruit trees and plants that surrounds the cottage giving you privacy. The cottage is perfect for two people and it had all that we needed to make it our temporary home for 8 nights. Having a hot tub was a bonus and it was great to be able to use the beach chairs that was available for use. It was so helpful to have a washer and dryer at the cottage as well. It was perfect and we loved it.

Very nice, quiet and secluded.

  • 4 of 5

Overall the cottage was very nice, clean and fit the description of the owners and previous guests. There are several problems: The hot water in the bathroom sink was inconsistent ranging from hot to cold without touching any other faucet. For this reason we did not use the shower that may or may not have worked if the water source was the same as the sink (solution: ocean swim each day). The hot tub, which is small but nice, continually had a problem with the heating/pump functions and a failure (FL) would occur frequently. This is an old tub. We could not figure out how to work the TV, which was actually a good thing. The frequently used deck sliding screen door is extremely old, continuously stuck and will soon break by someone's proper use. It's time for replacement as that was a significant source of frustration and anxiety. In all the cottage is very nice but the owners need to spend some time living in the cottage to see what the problems are. Lastly the coffee pot heating base hadn't been cleaned in a verrrry long time; disgusting, but I cleaned it before using. All in all it's a nice place for 2 and if Kilauea, seclusion and plenty of nice beaches is what you want, this cottage is very acceptable and recommended. I wish I was back there now!! (5 stars when the screen door is replaced)

Owner's Response: Thank you for the feedback. We strive to take great care of our guests and the property and respond just as soon as we hear that a repair or attention is needed. We do ask that our guests call us to report anything that is not in working order. We attribute our overwhelming positive reviews to that process. We have two tiers of contacts, on island and remote. In this instance there was no information exchanged during your stay so that opportunity was missed. We have investigatied the items and all is functioning as it should. Thanks for the summary statement that says what was needed to get to a five. We are there, a new Smart TV is in place.
