Newer two story, modern guest cottage attached to historic 'Cistern House' on ½ acre close to Zilker Neighborhood. The 'Cistern House Annex' is within walking distance to the back gate of Barton Springs Pool, Lady Bird Lake hike and bike trail, Umlauf Sculpture Garden, Long Center, and movie theatre, restaurants and coffee shops. Hardwoods upstairs, stained concrete down, open kitchen with custom cabinets, stainless appliances, natural light in every room – even the walk in closet. Upstairs bedroom has feel of treehouse with wall of casement windows and custom blinds, overlooking 100 year old Oaks. Duplex is attached to main house by a solid stone wall, creating both a sound barrier and one of a kind wall of natural cut stone in the living area. Historic 'Cistern House' and Annex: This property, with its 100 year old Oak trees, feels like you are in the country, yet you are within walking/biking distance of all the fun things about Austin. The 'Cistern House Annex' is attached to the historic 'cistern house' that was once an actual cistern that supplied water for the local farms 100 years ago. The property was featured in a 1953 article found in the Austin History Center because the original structure was naturally air conditioned from the caverns under the house. There is still a well piped through the roof of the main structure. The modern apartment was added in March of 2009. The owner is a potter and in addition to working on the property in his studio, he keeps the apartment furnished with his latest pottery creations.

Walk to the Best of Austin's Activities: A fun evening from this apartment would be to:

1. Walk or bike around the Lady Bird Lake trail (either the 3 1/2 mile, the 4 1/2 mile loop or the entire 10 mile loop) to the world headquarters of Whole Foods Market to dine in one of the many restaurants inside or on the rooftop.

2. Walk or bike to the back gate of Barton Springs Pool for a dip in the natural spring fed pool.

3. Walk or bike to the famous Alamodrafthouse movie theatre for dinner and the latest movie.

4. Attend the latest shows at the Long Center or enjoy the new Butler Park water features.

5. Walk to the Umlauf Sculpture Gardens

6. Walk or bike to the many restaurants and coffee shops lining Barton Springs and Lamar.

7. In five minutes be downtown, either at the new 2nd street restaurant area or to enjoy the nightlife on 6th street, including the famous Esther's Follies.

8. Enroll in Car2Go and have a car available to you within the central part of Austin - this lets you walk somewhere and drive back.

9. Guests enjoy a 10% discount at Barton Springs Bike Rental, which will pick you up and drop you off when you are renting bikes from them.

Local Attractions: During the day, explore the state Capital, Bob Bullock History Museum, Austin Museum of Art, University of Texas art museum, or LBJ Library. We are retired professors who enjoy sharing our lovely city with others. This photo was taken from the roof top of Whole Foods Market while listening to some great music. The guest apartment was built in 2009. There is a pottery studio on the premises where the beautiful pottery in the apartment is produced by Stan, who is a well established ceramic artist.

This is an incredibly unique property. Anyone who knows the area, knows this property because it is built adjoining a 100 year old cistern - that now functions as the kitchen, dining area and living room for the owner's house. The property is surrounded by towering trees on the 1/2 acre lot. It is close to the entrance to the greenbelt, and within walking distance of Barton Springs and the Hike and Bike Trail - along with many restaurants, coffee shops and entertainment venues.

First Austin Adventure - Not Our Last @ Cistern Annex!

Incredibly smooth reservation, check-in; Vicki was super helpful by providing detailed information about the Cistern Annex and surrounding attractions and food recommendations. We had a 2 year old with us, and it was perfect to have her upstairs in her pack & play sleeping, while we were downstairs enjoying wine & a movie. The HUGE backyard was wonderful and serene; we would have loved a tour of their pottery studio, but unfortunately they were out of town. We still peeked at their incredible work though :) It as our first time in Austin (coincidentially during SXSW), and the Cistern Annex was exactly what we were looking for and lived up to the hype. It was in a fantastic neighborhood, close to everything, and absolutely comfortable from beginning to end. HIGHLY recommended!!!!

Absolutely perfect!! An Austin Gem!

We loved this spot! It 's a perfect location and has everything you need for a stay in Austin. Decor is stylish and the architecture is so Austin! We said we could live here! Eleven year old boys slept on the downstairs futon - worked great - and enjoyed the back and front yards! Bed was so comfortable and the upstairs has such a cozy feeling with trees out every window. Wish we could have toured the pottery studio but our schedule was packed. I will not rent anywhere else in Austin - i will most definitely stay here! Thanks for making this such a lovely place!

Beautiful, quiet, peaceful, relaxing

This place was absolutely the best! It is very close to everything fun in Austin yet far enough back in the neighborhood to be very quiet. No road noise at all. The house is super cool and the apartment is just as cool. Very comfortable inside with lots of light. The owners are very friendly & the pottery is awesome. He really does good work. Thanx to both of them for a wonderful weekend!!! We will do it again!!!

We loved staying at the Annex apartment. Vicki and Stan are so nice and welcoming - offering suggestions of things to do from a local perspective. The amenities in the house are perfect. All of your needs are anticipated. We can't wait to go back.

Comfortable, Tasteful, Superb Location

The Cistern Annex was quiet, comfortable, and relaxing. The unit is equipped with everything you need in the kitchen, indoor and outdoor living spaces and bathroom. The location is ideal for enjoying the outdoors in the Zilker Park /downtown/UT areas, and convenient to the highway for excursions to other parts of Austin. Our hosts were gracious, responsive and accommodating. We highly recommend this unit.
