Great Place

  • 5 of 5

Property was as advertised. Owner responsive to all questions. Well maintained and clean. Looks even nicer than pictures. Great for our family of nine. Mom loved the kitchen. Wife loved the master suite and king bed. Kids want to know when we can stay again. Wish they could fit more than ten so I can bring the rest of the family. Mahalo.

Terrific Stay!! Can't wait to go back!

  • 5 of 5

We had such a great time staying at Taj Ma Hale. We were there with two families, and the bedroom setup was so ideal, since there are two really comfortable master bedrooms with luxurious bathrooms, along with the other three smaller bedrooms for the kids.

The kitchen was spacious and well stocked, and there was enough room for a few people to cook in the kitchen at the same time. The second sink was really a plus.

I do wish there were a larger dining room table, as it was a bit tight when all of us sat down together for meals, but we appreciated the old Hawaiiana style of the table and a lot of the furniture around the house.

We also wished there were bicycles to use, but we ended up renting them, and I would suggest that for other guests. It made going into town and exploring Hanalei a lot of fun.

We would definitely stay again.

Fun Vacation

  • 5 of 5

We first went to the Taj Ma Hale in October 2012 and the second time was in 2013. We so much enjoyed your home -- thank you for letting us stay. It is set up very nicely -- the kitchen has everything we needed to cook. The bed and bathrooms have plenty of towels and sheets and the house comes with a washer and dryer. We loved that it is walking distance to the beach and there were plenty of beach things to take with us. It is so peaceful in Hanalei and the island has so many things to do. We appreciated having wifi at the house and were glad to know that if anything went wrong we had numbers handy to call the manger or housekeeper. We loved the list of places and restaurants that were recommended. We are returning for our third time this October and are very much looking forward to another great vacation. Thanks so much for your lovely home!

Sorry -- NOT Quiet

  • 2 of 5

We stayed at this home in November of 2015. Seeing the house on vrbo with the caption "quiet" brought our stay right back to me. The house is great, laid out nicely, well stocked, etc. The management is excellent, very professional and responsive. I would give it five star except our vacation was ruined by the skateboard ramp that had been recently constructed and was being used by a full-time resident's children and friends next door. Before school, after school... all day on the Holiday and weekends. The constant skateboard noise was awful and I can't believe this home is still listed as being in a "quiet cul de sac". I use vrbo ratings and consider them very carefully when booking a unit and unfortunately I can only believe it is fair to post this as a warning for future renters.

Owner's Response: We are pleased to hear that you would give the house a five star review if not for the noise issue, because that will not be a problem in the future. The cul-de-sac is indeed very quiet. Many homes in Hanalei are located on streets that get quite a bit of traffic noise until late at night, and many of our guests are especially appreciative that the house is located where there is very little pedestrian or vehicular traffic. This makes for a wonderful spot, especially for families, where kids can play outside safely, while still close to the beach and town. You had mentioned that the skateboard ramp had been recently installed. In fact, the neighbors had installed that skateboard ramp years ago, however we have not received a single complaint other than yours. After reading your post, we contacted the neighbors to discuss the matter. They were very concerned that the ramp had disturbed anyone, however they insisted that your complaint had to have been an exaggeration. We were pleased to hear that they had removed the ramp in question, and replaced it with another one that is farther away from our home, and is constructed with a plywood material that is significantly quieter. Their son has never been allowed to use the ramp before school. Further, they have volunteered to share their phone number with our guests, and if any noise coming from their home is disturbing one of our guests, they would happily cease it. They are sensitive to the situation because their guest house is a vacation rental, too. We really do appreciate your input. We send an evaluation form to all our guests after their stay so that we can do our best to make sure our guests have the best stay possible. We hope you’ll consider staying with us again.

Nice...but count your towels!

  • 3 of 5

Enjoyed two weeks with our family in Taj Ma Hale. Nice location a few blocks away from Hanalei beach which was convenient for the kids. The owners thoughtfully decorated the house including hanging a feng shui bamboo flute in the ceiling rafters.

A word of caution: The owners are very particular about the towels – providing a price sheet listing replacement costs for damaged, stained or missing towels. With four bathrooms and beach towels, you’re responsible for over 60 towels. Upon arriving we read all the guidelines together as a family. To minimize “risk” we even stored all towels that we thought we wouldn’t use. No white towels were brought outside and the beach towels were counted after every beach visit. Quite a surprise to receive deductions from the security deposit for towels. With a large family, we clearly could have been at fault. Next time, I would get agreement with the housekeeper on the starting quantities in each of the six categories. If your numbers don’t match up, you pay dearly.

And don’t expect any issues to be fixed promptly. During our second day, we found that the fan for the indoor gas stove didn’t work. We called in the problem and were told someone would fix it. Nobody showed up during our 2 week stay. We coped by turning on the ceiling fan while opening the kitchen windows to clear out the gas fumes.

Owner's Response: Mike, thank you for your review and for staying with us. We do want to provide all ten guests at the house enough high quality bathroom and beach towels for their stay and we do count the towels before and after each rental. When they are forgotten at the beach or are lost or damaged, we do need to replace them and charge our guests. We would disagree that we make our guests pay dearly to replace them. Part of the cost involves paying our housekeepers to drive to the store and purchase them, more than an hour's drive. We are sorry we were unable to fix the stove fan for the gas range during your stay but our handyman did come by and made the attempt with a part that did not fit. We had to order the correct part from the Mainland which took over two weeks and have since completed that fix.

Hanalei Bay, ranked one of the top ten beaches in the world, is a great place for walking, jogging, swimming, surfing and boogey boarding. Snorkeling at Tunnels Beach is a short drive away. Our deck is a great place for bird watching.
