The 'Gingerbread House' was designed by J. Alvin Shadinger and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a Tudor-French Norman cottage completed in 1931 during the times he was designing similar cottages in the Diamond Head area and was Mr. Shadinger's personal home for many years. The house has been a location for several movies and television series. It has recently been remodeled and is located just across the street from Kahala Beach. We have just had our salt water pool installed and we love it as much as the ocean across the street!

The Gingerbread house is built on 3 levels with split A/C and has 4 bedrooms, with queen size luxury pillow-top mattresses adorned with Italian bedding. The downstairs bedroom also has a queen sofa bed for additional comfort and additional sleeping quarters. Tasteful art and accessories compliment each bedroom as well as flat screen televisions. The downstairs bedroom has a lovely view of the backyard fountain and pool. The hardwood floors throughout the home have been refinished and the living area is appointed with modern furnishings which give a clean, understated look letting the beauty of this one-of-a-kind cottage and it's natural surroundings sparkle. The kitchen is designed with professional appliances featuring a Viking gas range, Sub-Zero refrigerator, separate ice-maker and wine cooler, and dishwasher. The dining room seats 8 and is located just a few steps above the living room and indoor bar area.

The beautifully landscaped back yard features a pool, black tiled spa, covered lanai and a separate gazebo to make this a great home away from home in Hawaii. Just minutes away from Kahala Mall, Hanauma Bay, Ala Moana Shopping Center, and fine dining. Complimentary wireless internet service.

$5,000.00 deposit is required upon acceptance of reservation with remainder paid 60 days prior to arrival, along with a refundable $3,000 security deposit.

Reservations made less than 60 days before arrival will require a shorter payment schedule, which will be detailed in your reservation agreement.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Just 20 minutes from Honolulu International Airport we are in one of the most affluent neighborhoods in the State, just minutes from Kahala Mall, home to Whole Foods, Macy's and Long's Drug store and many other stores as well as Kahala Theaters and several restaurants.

Our family spent 5 nights at the Gingerbread House as part of our vacation (from Australia) and we did not want to leave. Our group ranged in age from 19 months to 65 years and the house was perfect for everyone. From the fantastic chef's kitchen, the beautifully landscaped gardens, the relaxing pool and lanai to the beach just across the road, we couldn't have asked for better. Not to mention the unique character of the property. We also appreciated all the small touches inside the property which helped to make our stay comfortable. Veronica and Sandy were great hosts and very accommodating to our needs. Thank you both. We would love to visit again in the future.

Located on Kahala Avenue, with access to Kahala Beach right across the street, the historic 'Gingerbread House' is a beautiful carefully maintained French Norman Tudor cottage by J Alvin Shadinger, built in the late 1920's. On the National Register of Historic Places since 1985. The Kahala Hotel & Resort, Waialae Country Club are less than a mile away. Our family had an amazing week at the Gingerbread House!

It exceeded expectations with a beautiful pool, hot tub and outdoor living area to grill and dine; beautifully stocked kitchen (we ended up eating in much more than I expected), and lots of private areas for our two children who had babies with them. Plenty of amenities including pool toys and towels. Sandy, the manager, was very accommodating and helpful. I’ve been to Hawaii three times and this was by far the best way to go!

Perfect location and fabulous tropical backyard oasis that accommodates multi-generational family

Our family was celebrating my California daughter's graduation from University of Hawaii. Veronica and Sandy were wonderful, the house is unique, and the backyard is spectacular (complete with a Koi/lily fountain and a very giving Mango tree)! We BBQ'd, walked the beach to the Kahala Hotel to watch the dolphin and walked to Waikiki while shaded by Diamond Head! I speak for the 8 of us who had the pleasure of enjoying this historic property, "We will be back!" This was one of our best family vacations.

A little piece of Paradise

This was our second stay at the Gingerbread and the only thing not to like is the fact that we had to eventually leave. The house is nice and has all the amenities you need but you could almost forget that because we spent most of our time in the spectacular garden. We never had a meal indoors - we enjoyed breakfast lunch and dinner outdoors on one of the two spacious outdoor tables. The neighborhood is quiet with everything you need - Whole Foods or the regular Times Supermarket just a short drive away. And of course the Pacific Ocean is across the street for morning and afternoon strolls. Thanks to Sandy for taking such good care of her guests. See you again soon!

Gingerbread House, Kahala: A Mixed Experience

We had a very mixed experience during our stay at The Gingerbread House. We have family in Honolulu and are regular visitors to the islands. We have admired this house for many years and looked forward to our gathering our family there. Although it is an attractive property, very well located on Kahala Avenue across from the beach access, we found the owner very difficult and confrontational. Upon arrival, she presented us with "House Rules" that contradicted the lease. She insisted we sign a second contract of "House Rules" and followed up with some very aggressively worded emails which was a very unpleasant start to our family holiday. The house itself is of historic significance, and as such, the French Norman/Tudor architecture makes the interior quite dark. The kitchen and dining room are not open to the living space, so this house does not lend itself to informal living. I would also add that some of the bedrooms are quite noisy if the air conditioning is not running. The highlight of this property was the outdoor space- the spacious lanai, the pool, and nicely landscaped garden are lovely for relaxation and family gatherings. I would advise future visitors to review the lease and discuss the house rules in advance to avoid having to deal with the antagonistic behaviour of the owner.

Owner's Response: We're so very thankful for all of the guests that have stayed with us over the past ten years, especially having received 24 Five Star reviews out of 26 of our guests that left reviews. ! I guess this just goes to prove you can't please everybody, but Sandy and I do try our best. Honestly we did try our best to accommodate these guests, even letting their son and girlfriend check in at 8am when they were scheduled at 10pm. When he would not sign our check in form saying his mother would sign it when she arrived later I began to wonder if this was a sign of some kind of problem ahead. I won't allow my staff to be verbally abused by anyone after the parents were very rude to my manager and I suggested they would be much happier somewhere else and offered them all of their money back if they would just leave. They chose to stay and did eventually sign our check in form. When they left we were absolutely astonished to find an antique lamp had been broken and they said nothing. We didn't charge them for the damage and we just racked it up as our first unhappy guests since we started renting in 2004. We encourage all our future guests to come stay with us and experience what so many other guests and repeat guests have been enjoying for years now. We look forward to 2017 and all the guests that are already booked to stay with us! We only have a few more dates available for the rest of 2017 and have booked two other guests for 2018 already!
