The 'Gingerbread House' was designed in the late 1920's by J. Alvin Shadinger and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It is a Tudor-French Norman cottage completed in 1931 during the times he was designing similar cottages in the Diamond Head area and was Mr. Shadinger's home for many years. The house has been a location for several movies and television series. It has recently been remodeled and is located just across the street from Kahala Beach, although this July 2016 we had our salt water pool installed and we love it as much as the ocean across the street!
The Gingerbread house is built on 3 levels with split A/C and has 4 bedrooms, all with queen size luxury pillow-top mattresses adorned with Italian bedding. Tasteful art and accessories compliment each bedroom as well as flat screen televisions with built in DVD. The downstairs bedroom has a lovely view of the backyard fountain and pool. The hardwood floors throughout the home have been refinished and the living area is appointed with modern furnishings which give a clean, understated look letting the beauty of this one-of-a-kind cottage and it's natural surroundings sparkle. The kitchen is designed with professional appliances featuring a Viking gas range, Sub-Zero refrigerator, separate ice-maker and wine cooler, and dishwasher. The dining room seats 8 and is located just a few steps above the living room and indoor bar area.
The beautifully landscaped back yard features a pool, black tiled spa, covered lanai and a separate gazebo to make this a great home away from home in Hawaii. Just minutes away from Kahala Mall, Hanauma Bay, Ala Moana Shopping Center, and fine dining. Complimentary wireless internet service.

Just 20 minutes from Honolulu International Airport we are in one of the most affluent neighborhoods in the State, just minutes from Kahala Mall, home to Whole Foods, Macy's and Long's Drug store and many other stores as well as Kahala Theaters and several restaurants.
Our family spent 5 nights at the Gingerbread House as part of our vacation (from Australia) and we did not want to leave. Our group ranged in age from 19 months to 65 years and the house was perfect for everyone. From the fantastic chef's kitchen, the beautifully landscaped gardens, the relaxing pool and lanai to the beach just across the road, we couldn't have asked for better. Not to mention the unique character of the property. We also appreciated all the small touches inside the property which helped to make our stay comfortable. Veronica and Sandy were great hosts and very accommodating to our needs. Thank you both. We would love to visit again in the future.
This is a true gem of a house in the best neighborhood in Oahu... we have 9 people from a big family joining the vacation (including three kids) and everyone had a blast. Lots of time we just hanged around at the pool and jacuzzi since it's so relaxing, with a few very colorful birds and an occasional frog stopping by. The rooms upstairs are of good size and very comfortable, although the basement room is a bit of a squeeze. The kitchen is excellent (did i mention the wine storage area?) and has everything we need to cook (just about all the dinners) during our 8 day stay. The manager (Sandy) was super responsive when I had some questions about the grill.
Thank you Veronica for sharing your great house with us -- we look forward to coming back!
A truly fabulous house and very accommodating owner and manager. We were a group of 7: 3 young children, parents and grandparents. Plenty of room for all of us. The beds were incredibly comfortable - our daughter called it her princess bed. The kitchen was well equipped and suited our needs. Wonderful pool and spa with water toys for the kids.
Can't recommend this house more highly. We'll definitely be back.
We rented this home for a family reunion/vacation. The house was very comfortable and the outdoor areas were perfect for relaxing with the family. The neighborhood is excellent. I would suggest visitors rent a car while staying there. We rented one and were able to drive to several beaches on the island and could make several runs to the Safeway for groceries. Also, it was good to be able to drive into Waikiki some evenings for dinner/walking around. While there is a bus stop in front of the house, the limited schedule can impact your planning. Whole Foods is about a 30 min walk from the house. The store has great food but is expensive for basics.
Would highly recommend this property to visitors. We would love to return to this house.
Our extended family of 10 stayed in this beautifully kept historic home in Kahala, Oahu. Close to all amenities, beach, and town, we felt that it was the perfect location to stay in during our vacation. The owner, Veronica, and property manager, Sandy, welcomed us in grand style with fresh flowers and Hawaiian treats. Sandy was quickly responsive to our inquiries during our stay. Truly a lovely place to create wonderful family vacation memories.
My husband and I had kept our family vacation rental a secret. When we arrived at the Gingerbread House, our children and grandchildren were amazed. As we walked in, we were speechless. This was the perfect house for us. Each family had their own space and the common areas gave us a place to come together. Enjoying morning coffee on the patio, watching the many birds, and the view of the mist over the mountains....what a way to start the day! With the beach just a short walk away and the pool and hot tub at the house, we were not without choices. The location was only a short distance from shopping and sightseeing. Sandy was so helpful and available if needed. I could go on and on. In short...this was the perfect house for our family's memories of a lifetime. Thank you Veronica, Sandy, and the Gingerbread House.
I want to compliment the owner, Veronica Worth, and her property manager, Sandy. It is obvious they both take a lot of pride in providing their clients a very good experience while staying at The Gingerbread House. Both Veronica and Sandy are responsive and behave professionally. It was a pleasure dealing with both of them. This property is in excellent condition and provides all of the comforts of home. The house is well appointed and the kitchen is fully stocked with every item a family needs. The backyard is fantastic, as it has a great pool, nice outdoor furniture, and is meticulously landscaped. The pictures are accurate. The house is on famous Kahala Drive and is close to Kahala Mall, where there is a Whole Foods. It is just minutes from The Kahala Hotel. Great location. My ONLY criticism is the downstairs bedroom and bathroom. That bedroom and bathroom are more like a beach bungalow and are not as nice as the other three bedrooms and bathrooms. It's adequate for a few small children (or teenagers) that don't care about 'nice'. (The other bedrooms and bathrooms are 'nice', as they are fully updated.) I challenge the claim that this house can sleep 10. In my opinion, that's a stretch, as the only way it can sleep 10 is if you put 2 people in every queen (or double bed). There are no twin beds. That being said, the property worked PERFECTLY for my family of 5. We had plenty of room, as every adult child had their own bedroom and bath, and my wife and I had ours. This property is a solid 5 Star property and we look forward to staying there again.
Hanauma Bay only minutes away as is Waikiki Beach if you care for a beach with more tourists!! Otherwise, you'll love the secluded and more private beach we have just across the street!
Waikiki is approximately 3 1/2 miles away as is Kapiolani Park.
Less than a mile away is The Kahala Hotel & Resort, home to fine dining, cocktails, dolphin encounters and local entertainment. Formerly known as The Kahala Hilton.
Also less than a mile away and on the way to The Kahala Hotel & Resort is world famous Waialae Country Club, home of the Sony Open Golf Tournament
