A laid-back, artful Thanksgiving

  • 5 of 5

We booked Larkin's magical property for a family Thanksgiving this year. From our first steps inside we were fascinated by the artful, imaginative touches she has incorporated into the interior and exterior of the cabin. We were comfy and cozy immediately. Despite being rather tiny, the kitchen had everything we needed (except a portable mixer, which I brought) and was a pleasure to work in. We stayed from Tuesday until Saturday, and we could conveniently fill all our grocery and eating out needs at a shopping center four miles away. Big oven cooked our turkey beautifully, plus we made pies and a cake. What helps the kitchen support the creation of dinner for ten is a giant island. Because the weather was mild, we decided to eat at the over-sized picnic table outside in the sun, with the river sparkling 50 feet away. We used the round dining area table as a buffet. Later we enjoyed conversation by the outdoor fire pit. Friday was Christmas crafts with the kids, again at the picnic table. We had so much fun! The children were happy and the adults relaxed. Cabin is exactly as described, only more interesting. Very comfortable and clean. Loved the solitude of the setting in the woods, reached by a "driveway" that has to be a quarter mile in length. One caveat: highway 360 crosses the Mattaponi River very near the property. At first we noticed the traffic, and very quickly we forgot about it. It became part of the experience, one we hope to repeat ASAP. Our dogs had a great time too--they could be off-leash outside and they played, explored, chased each other and generally celebrated their freedom. If you want posh, go somewhere else. If you value creativity, design, art and comfort, I guess we'll be competing for reservations. Oh: Larkin was very responsive and helpful, as well as thoroughly informative about the property.

Perfect place to take a break from life

  • 5 of 5

Our family now comes yearly to this wonderful place to get a chance to rest and breathe a little bit after a busy spring. Our three young kids love the house and the river, and the freedom they have in the backyard, on the hammock, and with so many fun games to play inside. This is a rustic sort of house, and as such made us feel cozy without having constantly tell the kids that they couldn't touch anything. We had fires in the evening and enjoyed playing chess on the porch. We also took the canoe out daily, and even saw a river otter right across the river from the house.

Another thing that has surprised us on our multiple trips to Aylett was how close to Richmond we were. It was easy to take a day trip into the city, and each time we went we found different things to do. A children's theater, museums, free nature centers, and free parks with petting zoos have been some of the great gems we've stumbled upon. Needless to say- the combination of having many Richmond options close by and at the same time staying at a cozy house away from everything is a great combo. When we left, our kids actually said they wished we had spent even more time at the house. It was that enjoyable for them. Plus, tvs in the bedrooms were a special treat to be able to watch cartoons when they woke up!

This is a unique place. If you're adventurous, and looking for a getaway that is connected with nature and will refresh your soul, you will really enjoy your stay. Thanks Larkin!

Disappointed

  • 2 of 5

My husband & I booked this for a romantic Christmas getaway, our 1st ever. We were very disappointed & only stayed a total of about 3hours before repacking & driving 2 hours back home. Let me start by advising that the "driveway" into this location is 1/3 of a mile through the woods on a very narrow partial gravel driveway. It was & had been raining for a while when we arrived. If we had gone off the drive I'm sure we would have been stuck, the water was already encroaching the sides. The parking area & around the cabin were also becoming deep with water, ankle at least. The owner was there when we arrived, it to check for mice. Of which, several were found. This was a concern for obvious reasons & our dogs. We slowly became more concerned as we were advised of flood stages for the river, knowing how low we were. The owner sent me a text to access the info about the flood stages, but there is not internet & we could not access this. She mentioned in passing to my husband that we might flood. After she left & we continued to watch the river & the rain we became more & more concerned about the flooding. A mouse running across my head & hissing at my dog made our minds up for us. We packed up & left. Good thing we did because those mice were the smart ones, they were looking for the highest ground around. The next am, back at home, I checked the flood stages for the river via the link I was sent, if we had stayed we would have lost our truck & been completely stuck, possibly on the 2nd floor. I called the owner & advised her that we had left, at which time she stated it was probably a good thing since it did flood. I continued to watch the river over Christmas & it broke 11ft & was traveling at 1,740 cubic ft per second. Why wouldn't you tell some one about this ahead of time?

We were fortunate enough to receive a full refund for our stay & the owner was most apologetic for what happened.

I should mention a few other items. The canoe was crushed in, one of the kayaks was in 2 pieces, the fishing gear was all rusted & apart. The dock that is shown in the picture with the telescope on it is actually falling off into the river. I would not step on it & I certainly wouldn't let children play on it. The interior was pretty, but dark. I did think the kitchen was adorable. I was just disappointed that it did not live up to what was advertised.

Owner's Response: Well, I did everything they asked of me and offered them a free stay later on, but they were still unsatisfiable. Let me begin by saying that the safety of my guests is always my first concern. Had this couple been in any danger from the river I would have popped over and clearly informed them if their phone was not working. These poor guys drove up in torrential rain. It had been like that the day before to. When that much freaky rain falls all at once it's going to be puddly. The creek next to the driveway was doing its job removing rain water from the road, not overflowing onto the gravel. Had they stayed the night they would have found the driveway and yard back to normal the next day. The river crested well below flood stage. They were never in any danger at all. Nature abounds around this cabin in the woods. The tiny field mice who found their way into the attic during the freakishly heavy rain apparently left the next day too. According to the traps I set around. One last note: canoe, kayaks, and fishing gear are all in good working order. The fishing platform is a little sloped but solid. And yes my kitchen is super cute.

wonderful relaxing weekend

  • 4 of 5

My fiance, our two dogs and I needed a break from the hustle and bustle of Northern Virginia living and this hit the spot! We fished, and napped. We hiked, and napped. We cooked, and napped. We watched movies (vintage Star Wars, on VHS),and napped. We went wine tasting, and napped. Like I said everything we needed!

Plus side -comfy bed, plenty of games and movies, fully stocked kitchen, dog friendly, canoe (and kayaks), and two hammocks.

Down side - we couldn't get the woods stove to stay lit, I think the wood was wet. No biggie, house was warm and plenty of blankets to cuddle in.

We want to come back in the summer when we can enjoy the river more!

Graceland

  • 5 of 5

Scheduled this getaway because of the outstanding cabin, river, and activities and wasn't able to go, so gave the trip to my brother and some friends and heard nothing but rave reviews. Their only regret was that they didn't have more time to spend here. The property owner and her dog were incredibly pleasant and helpful, and the amenities left us wanting nothing. My brother, friends, and I would highly recommend this cabin for anyone looking for a quite getaway adjacent to a peaceful river in a beautiful part of the country

Relaxing Rustic Retreat on the River

  • 5 of 5

Had a great weekend getaway on the Mattaponi River. There were 4 adults with 1 German Shepherd Dog in our group and we had plenty of room inside and out to relax and play. The free use of the Kayaks and canoe made our stay even more enjoyable since we did not have to worry about taking them on and off our own cars. Larkin was very nice and easy to deal with. She made our stay very welcoming. If you are looking for a nice relaxing getaway for your Family and Friends, you should give this place a shot. It is very private without being difficult to reach while having rustic charm with modern amenities, the perfect blend for a relaxing retreat.

If you enjoy boating, fishing, swimming... the Mattaponi River is the place for you. This house sits about 50' from the edge of the river with 3 kayaks and a canoe for your convenience. Beautiful ZOAR STATE FOREST is just across the river so hiking and park activities are easy! There's a public boat ramp about 1000' away (but totally out of eye shot) but kayaks and canoes con launch from the floating dock here. The river is freshwater and tidal. At low tide its 10 or so feet deep near the shore (old channel) .about 4 or 5 in the middle, and even less on the other side. Bottom is mostly sandy! Currents are usually not very strong, and every12 hours stops completely and changes direction. Very user friendly!

. Aylett is close to Richmond (50 min.), DC (90 min) Willamsburg (60 min) with easy access to fast moving roads.

Other Activities: KINGS DOMINION Close!! 30 min -Bush Gardens and OUTLET stores are about40 min away. New badmitten set!
