A laid-back, artful Thanksgiving

  • 5 of 5

We booked Larkin's magical property for a family Thanksgiving this year. From our first steps inside we were fascinated by the artful, imaginative touches she has incorporated into the interior and exterior of the cabin. We were comfy and cozy immediately. Despite being rather tiny, the kitchen had everything we needed (except a portable mixer, which I brought) and was a pleasure to work in. We stayed from Tuesday until Saturday, and we could conveniently fill all our grocery and eating out needs at a shopping center four miles away. Big oven cooked our turkey beautifully, plus we made pies and a cake. What helps the kitchen support the creation of dinner for ten is a giant island. Because the weather was mild, we decided to eat at the over-sized picnic table outside in the sun, with the river sparkling 50 feet away. We used the round dining area table as a buffet. Later we enjoyed conversation by the outdoor fire pit. Friday was Christmas crafts with the kids, again at the picnic table. We had so much fun! The children were happy and the adults relaxed. Cabin is exactly as described, only more interesting. Very comfortable and clean. Loved the solitude of the setting in the woods, reached by a "driveway" that has to be a quarter mile in length. One caveat: highway 360 crosses the Mattaponi River very near the property. At first we noticed the traffic, and very quickly we forgot about it. It became part of the experience, one we hope to repeat ASAP. Our dogs had a great time too--they could be off-leash outside and they played, explored, chased each other and generally celebrated their freedom. If you want posh, go somewhere else. If you value creativity, design, art and comfort, I guess we'll be competing for reservations. Oh: Larkin was very responsive and helpful, as well as thoroughly informative about the property.

Unique house right beside the river

  • 5 of 5

This place is amazing. Every time we turned around we saw something we had not seen before. The owner has gone to great lengths to appoint this house with tons of personality. Large lot, perfect with dogs. River right behind the house, with several good fishing spots. We stayed here because my son was getting married nearby. If we ever have a need to stay in the area again we would definitely stay at Aylett River Paradise.

River front gem close to Richmond

  • 5 of 5

We came up from South Carolina with our two dogs and met our son and his girlfriend, students in Richmond, for a long weekend. The house was clean and comfortable and the river was a great backdrop. We fished, kayaked, and hiked in the nearby Zoar State forest and had a wonderful time enjoying nature! Larkin was terrific! She was so helpful, available and thoughtful. I really enjoyed meeting her! Hope to get back there again!

Wonderful getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My boyfriend and I loved our stay! We were looking for a peaceful escape from DC with our dog and this was perfect. The house is set back quite a ways from the road so when you're there you feel completely alone in the wilderness but you're still only 10 minutes from a supermarket and Richmond is an easy day trip. The yard is lovely with a hammock and fire pit and there are also several sitting areas right on the river and we loved taking our dog to sit with us in the morning with coffee watching the river go by - very relaxing! The house itself is a great mix of rustic cabin feel with modern conveniences. There are ac units, a dishwasher, and laundry machines. The kitchen is well stocked in terms of pots, pans, and kitchen utensils and I was able to make all our meals and do some baking with what was there. The house is big enough for larger groups but if you close the door to the upstairs and the second downstairs bedroom it felt cosy enough for two. Larkin is a very thoughtful host. She was there to meet us when we arrived and went over everything with us. She provides lots of amenities from all the paper goods and toiletries you might need to kayaks and fishing gear. She was also kind enough to check in on us via text to make sure we had everything we needed. We had a great time and highly recommend this rental!

Relaxing riverfront retreat to heal your soul

  • 5 of 5

We are so very thankful to have found this place! It was a perfect getaway for our family of 4 (an outdoorsy man, a love-to-relax woman, a constantly-on-the-move 10 year old, and a take-it-easy 12 year old) and our dog. There was a unified sigh of relief when we pulled up to the house, which continued upon exploring the area and inside.

It was a short 1 1/2 hour drive to Busch Gardens for a day of roller coaster fun, but most of our trip was enjoyably spent at the house. The river was perfect for swimming and kayaking all day, with vessels-a-plenty for us all, and a canoe fit for a dog. There are no other houses around, and while the main road can be seen and heard from the yard, it didn't bother us one bit.

Inside the house was well stocked with everything we needed and then some. We only needed clothes and food. The kitchen is stocked with spices, extra propane for the grill, and everything else a kitchen needs. The board game supply is ample, and provided us a wonderful family game night. And for those slow times where you may want to relax in front of a tv, there is one in every room with directTV and movies, although we didn't take advantage of that much for the call of the river.

All in all it was the most perfect place for us and we hated to leave. We will surely be back again, hopefully very soon. Thank you Larkin!!

A wonderful rustic retreat with plenty of creature comforts.

  • 4 of 5

Our family had a great experience at the Aylett River Paradise. Larkin was a wonderful genuine hostess; she takes good care of her guests. It's a wonderful rustic retreat, but with plenty of creature comforts. A very scenic location with complete privacy. A little road noise in the background, but not constant and easy to get used to. A great place to relax overall. The access to the river for canoeing and kayaking is a real treat and one of the reasons we chose it. So much better than staying at a hotel. You can't have a campfire and lounge in a hammock at a hotel. Would definitely come back if vacationing in that area of VA again.

If you enjoy boating, fishing, swimming... the Mattaponi River is the place for you. This house sits about 50' from the edge of the river with 3 kayaks and a canoe for your convenience. Beautiful ZOAR STATE FOREST is just across the river so hiking and park activities are easy! There's a public boat ramp about 1000' away (but totally out of eye shot) but kayaks and canoes con launch from the floating dock here. The river is freshwater and tidal. At low tide its 10 or so feet deep near the shore (old channel) .about 4 or 5 in the middle, and even less on the other side. Bottom is mostly sandy! Currents are usually not very strong, and every12 hours stops completely and changes direction. Very user friendly!

. Aylett is close to Richmond (50 min.), DC (90 min) Willamsburg (60 min) with easy access to fast moving roads.

Other Activities: KINGS DOMINION Close!! 30 min -Bush Gardens and OUTLET stores are about40 min away. New badmitten set!
