Our names are Bill & Tricia Meier and we are the proud owners of these beautiful Cowlitz River Cabins & Tipi. Each is named appropriately, starting with the RAINIER LOG HOUSE, THE ADAMS CHALET, THE ST HELEN’S COTTAGE. And last but not least is our beautiful TATOOSH TIPI.
As far back as our dating years, we had dreamed of moving out of the city of Olympia and building a log house somewhere high in a mountainous area. About 10 years ago, we got serious and started our search throughout Washington and Oregon for land that would be just the right fit for us. Within a year we stumbled onto this piece of ground and it was love at first site. Finding these 8 acres of land was the beginning of making our dreams come true. Within 2-years of our purchase, we packed up our belongings and moved out to our 8 acre piece of Packwood Heaven.
The first of our cabins to be built was the Rainier Log House. Our plan had always been to purchase a log house kit, but Bill decided he desired an AUTHENTIC log house and he wanted to master the construction himself from top to bottom. So after purchasing a used boom truck and enough logs from a neighbor logging who was logging his property, Bill was on his way. The Rainier Log House was his first masterpiece. Next came THE ST. HELENS COTTAGE and THE MT. ADAMS CHALET soon followed. Then about a year ago, we decided to offer our guest another unique experience by erecting an authentic 22' Tipi complete with all the comforts of home.
It has all been an adventurous labor of love. We hope, whichever of our beauties you choose, you will make memories to last forever.
Another relaxing stay. Snowed real hard at Mt. Rainier. We hall had a wonderful time. Will be back again soon.
Just back from a 7-night stay. I was overwhelmed by the natural beauty of the environment and the great shape and general cleanliness of the chalet. The kitchen is incredibly well stocked, just add food! It's a place I would have recommended to nearly anyone. There's a huge vegetable garden there for the picking--wonderful!
BUT, there was one really important issue that is now a deal-breaker for me in terms of ever going back, and that was the horrendous shape of the bed in the master bedroom! It had a visible sag that was super magnified when one person laid down, let alone two! We had to cling to the edge to prevent being buried in the pit. Moreover, every single move inspired a chorus of noisy springs that repeatedly woke us both up. Mornings meant such relief to get out of that bed, but such a disappointment because of the poor sleep quality that prevented a feeling of rest from the day before. I chose this particular rental because it had a first-floor bedroom--I've got a physical disability that prevents stair climbing, besides there's no bathroom upstairs to serve those two bedrooms. Stuck with that terrible bed, I highly recommend that anyone who thinks they might want to stay on the first floor (adjacent to a wonderful hot tub!) first make sure that the bed has been replaced. Yes, it's a major drawback to staying here, yet everything else about it seemed almost idyllic! I was also disappointed to find there was only iron patio furniture--no comfortable place to sit outside for longer than a cup of coffee.
The town of Packwood held a few interesting places to visit, but the height of our trip was a slow drive from Packwood toward Mt. Ranier via Forest Highway 52. What a delightful drive! Unfortunately, there aren't any handicap-accessible sites on Mt. Adams to visit, although there are at Mts. St. Helens & Ranier. We just found MSH to be too far to drive for a day trip. As I said, the beauty around the property and the general quiet made simply sitting in the recliner, looking out the open window, and reading to be a real satisfying past-time for me. I'm not so sure young kids would agree, but there's a new wide-screen TV upstairs for them. The echo in the chalet would probably make any quiet activity impossible if the TV was on, but I don't go to the mountains to watch TV. If you can find enjoyment listening to the wind in the evergreens, the birds busy chirping, and nightly soaks in the hot tub under the stars, you'd love this place.
I stayed here with my 6 year old son over a weekend and it was wonderful. The cabin is very spacious, everything is super clean, and there is everything you could need. It rained all weekend so we cooked inside and the kitchen was very accommodating. There were pots, pans, all cooking utensils, foil, oven mitts, etc. The cabin is really cozy, the fireplace works well, and the area is very private. There is another cabin on the same lot, but the trees block it really well so it's like it isn't even there. John, the owner, was really easy to work with. This spot is great for small or large groups, and I hope to come back with a group of friends next time. The jacuzzi was clean and functioned well too. Overall we had a great time here and cannot wait to come back!
Spacious and beautifully crafted, the "luxury" Adams chalet is designed for families looking for relaxation, fun and adventures! The cabin itself is remote, quiet and private considering there were other cabins nearby. The main floor features a master bedroom with ensuite bath consisting of a toilet and stall shower separated from the bedroom by a pocket door. A pedestal sink area is open to the bedroom. We found the faucet handle not screwed on properly, coming off in our hands, and the pedestal sink itself is separated/pulled from the wall and not sealed properly. There is no counter space for toiletries. Plenty of fresh towels. The shower provided hot and or cold water and pressure at its own discretion. The queen sized bed in the master room was very uncomfortable for our taste and made a loud squeaky creaking racket at every movement. The kitchen and living areas are an open concept and there is a gas heater as well as a wall heater for warmth. Some pots and pans could use replacing...no waffle iron or griddle or baking sheets. Plenty of drink and flat ware and dishes to be found. There is a large dining table however we were quite concerned as to the sturdiness of the kitchen chairs as they were a little rickety to feel safe to sit in.
Living room furniture was a bit dated, (a sunken couch which we discovered was a hideabed and a worn rocker recliner) although decor was charming. It would be helpful to note the location of the board games mentioned on the Note that the one television is upstairs in a sitting area. One suggestion would be to install a flat screen TV downstairs for those mobility challenged with stairs or, for those who wish to watch an alternate program. There is a perfect spot for one.
The floor is not carpeted and made of uneven, and in many places, cracked stone which is rather chilly afoot, so slippers or socks in the cooler months are highly recommended. We washed all the pot and pans we needed prior to using them as they were sticky and the microwave was dirty inside and out which we opted not to use leaving it as we found it. The grounds were tidy and well groomed. Although the issues we found during our stay were minor to some degree, they distracted from the description of "luxury cabin " somewhat and certainly seem an easy and affordable fix and improvement to bring it up to that level. We enjoyed our time here. Website photos of the cabin interior need updating to reflect current provisions.
We arrived at the cabin and found it ready for us to enjoy. Everything we needed to cook our meals was provided and we even got fresh veggies out of the garden, which is BEAUTIFUL by the way!!
Plenty of towels and the washer/dryer came in handy as well.
Relaxing in the hot tub with the kids while my Husband BBQ'd may have been my favorite part:)
This cabin was everything we hoped for and more. Clean, well equipped, and cozy. The children's play area was a nice touch!
