Green Head Forge is on 3.5 beautiful acres on the outskirts of Stonington in a comfortable family neighborhood.
It's nestled in the woods among granite ledges and lichen-covered boulders -- there is even an old quarry on the property! There's lots of privacy and winding paths to explore.
Green Head Cove is at the end of the street, and you'd be hard-pressed to find a more picturesque spot than this for launching your kayaks, swimming (brrrr!), or picnicking on the rocks while watching the lobster boats come and go.
Walk a little farther along the cove to Green Head Lobster Company for live lobsters right off the boat! We're just a short walk through the woods to the Farmers' Market on Fridays at the Island Community Center, or head into the village for shopping, art galleries, friendly restaurants and the ice cream parlor, or the Opera House for movies and live shows.
Visit the library or the Community Center for internet access. And don't miss the mail boat to Isle au Haut, or take another scenic boat tour!
The original owners of The Forge were dear family friends, Jack and Harriet Hemenway, who ran the forge and studio. Many examples of Jack's fine iron work remain in the cabin and around the grounds.
We have remodeled the studio into a rustic yet very comfortable two-bedroom cabin featuring a modern kitchen with soaring ceiling and large windows overlooking the trees and gardens.
A microwave oven and coffee pot are included, along with all the cooking equipment you'll need for your stay. The living room has a lobster-trap coffee table, cozy seating, and lots of light from more tall windows.
The bedrooms and bathroom with shower are upstairs. The master bedroom also has a cathedral ceiling and tall windows that make you feel part of the outdoors -- you'll catch glimpses of the harbor and houses along Green Head Cove.
The second large bedroom has a double and a twin bed plus a real treat: a back door that opens onto a little bridge to the yard, where you can sit among the granite boulders and listen to the birds.
In addition to the two bedrooms, we have a cot and an aero-bed available, as well as a port-a-crib and highchair on request.
Our property is a rustic oasis, a peaceful get-away in the fragrant woods.

We are Richard and Wilda Eaton, lifelong residents of Stonington. Richard is a direct descendant of the first settler of Deer Isle, William Eaton, in the 1700' s. Wilda's family have been fishermen on the island for generations. Richard loves to play golf and enjoys the summer tournament at the Island Country Club. We have a son, Chris, and daughter-in-law, Morgan, who have three children. Our daughter Pam and her husband Andrew have two children. Wilda loves gardening, tending both vegetables and flowers. We are active volunteers on Deer Isle's Memorial Ambulance Corps and the American Legion. And, of course, we always enjoy spending time with our family and friends.
Wilda Eaton purchased this cottage in 2009
The Forge is on a beautiful 3.5-acre site on the outskirts of Stonington. It's nestled in the woods among granite outcroppings and paths to explore. My husband was one of its builders back in 1972, and the owners were dear family friends, who ran the forge and studio. Many examples of the fine iron work remain in the cottage and around the grounds.
Our property is an oasis, a peaceful get-away in the fragrant woods. It's just a short walk to the village and the waterfront, a picturesque cove filled with lobster boats and pleasure craft.
thank you so much for the wonderful review, I look forward to seeing you again next summer.
We loved our stay at the Forge. Being "off the grid" was just what we needed. Have been to Stonington many times before but really loved being close to town and the beach. We hiked the Island Heritage Trust trails and enjoyed packing a lunch and finding a beautiful spot to have it. Did our mailboat trip to Isle Au Haut to hike. One of my favorite days of our trip. We had perfect weather. My most favorite of all were the stars!!!! We could watch them outside and then again while lying in bed. Try to plan your time there around a new moon. Thank you Wilda for sharing your place with us. Thanks for letting us have our black lab Kiva . The home is private and comfy. At first I didn't know about the no tv or cell phone but I loved it. Should happen more often!!!! Hope to be back again.
We had a restful time unplugging in beautiful Stonington, ME with our two young children at the Greanhead Forge. Wilda was super friendly and helpful. The Forge is conveniently located near Brooklin, ME and Acadia National Park. We could easily walk to town, enjoyed "Mini Village," the Penobscot Bay Resource Center touch tank and informative staff, and felt like locals at Harbor Cafe. It's a quick drive over to Sand Beach and Burnt Cove Market. The Master bedroom's corner windows give a breath-taking view of the stars at night. Beautiful.
We highly recommend taking a private guided tour with Walter Reed on The Gael--we learned about the lobster business and saw bald eagles, harbor seals and much more. One of the highlights from our trip.
We had a wonderful stay this past week visiting our daughter. Three generations had a relaxing time staying at Green Head Forge. The location was so convenient for a walk or short drive to town, and yet had a very private feeling. We were all very comfortable, and found everything we needed for our week in Stonington.
We had a wonderful time here with our three small children. They loved exploring the woods in the garden, picking wild blueberries for breakfast pancakes, and playing on the rocks and exploring the tide pools just over the road from the cottage. We also enjoyed the peaceful sand beach which is lovely for swimming, a boat trip from stonington harbour and we drove to Acadia National Park one day which was amazing. The cottage is rustic and cosy, and is set right in the woodland with lovely big windows. It had everything we needed for a comfortable stay.
We stayed in August with our 3 year old daughter and had a wonderful vacation. Our daughter could have spent the entire week happily picking the berries on the property. The house is secluded and private, but conveniently located. We walked to town and the farmers' market, and made short drives to Sand Beach, Red Barn Farm, and the wonderful trails throughout the island maintained by Island Heritage Trust. Our daughter loved the model of the quarry operations at the Granite Museum, and we enjoyed cooking in the Forge's kitchen as well as eating out in town. Wilda is a wonderful caretaker of the property. She has great information about Stonington and the island, and she generously gifted us with fresh vegetables from her garden. We will stay at the forge again the next time we visit Maine!
This cottage in the heart of Stonington is an amazing find. It is charmingly rustic in the best sense. Our daughter thought it was a fairy cottage when she first saw it through the trees. Inside though, its magic really unfolds; the architect who designed it was both clever and aesthetic. The master bedroom has great slanting windows that provide you with that "Outside In" effect. We were lucky enough to stay there during a full moon, and the view was incredible. The children's room is cozy and well-appointed with toys and games. If you have older children, they can take a back path through the woods and quickly emerge at a cafe that has not only yummy treats, but (wait for it)- reliable WiFi!! And also a playground across the way. The sense of peace and privacy was wonderful considering that you are almost in the heart of Stonington. We were able to walk everywhere enjoyably, but always felt on our own in nature. And Wilda is a kind and thoughtful hostess. She was available without ever being intrusive, and patiently answered our many questions. Our children really loved it here, and we will try to visit again.
