My wife and I share a mutual love of scuba diving which has fueled our passion for travel and that's how we first discovered the beautiful island of Utila.
We'd been visiting the island regularly for a couple of years, when in 2005 we purchased several pieces of beachfront land at Treasure Beach. Our first home, the Coral House, was completed in 2007 and our second, the Pineapple House, was finished in early 2009.
We love helping our guests get the most (or least) from their time here and of course diving whenever we get the chance.
Laurence Hegarty purchased this house in 2009
I used to love to visit Ambergris Caye Belize in the early nineties and had always wanted to buy property there but somehow never did. When i first visited Utila in 2003 it reminded me of what Ambergris Caye used to be like (but sadly no longer is), quiet, no cruise ships, no chains, no golf courses, no roads and unaffected friendly locals. So this time i took the plunge, determined to enjoy a Caribbean island before it was spoiled by the 21st century.
Treasure Beach is three miles from town and can only be reached by boat, this makes it perfect for those seeking to leave the tourist hoards behind and find peace and privacy. If you're looking for discos, buffets and hard rock t-shirts, you'll hate it. Those seeking warm water, snorkeling, shell collecting, an empty beach, star gazing, diving and boat trips to little cays inhabited by fisherman will love it.
Heaven on Earth
We spent one of the best weeks ever at Pineapple House. The house was perfect for my family of six (four children 8-15). The property manager was beyond helpful and the owner was a tremendous asset. We did nothing but relax in the sun everyday and eat fresh seafood. Pictures could not describe the beauty of the house, water and island. The people of the island were friendly and despite the State department Honduras warnings we felt perfectly safe. Perfect get away if you want to get off the grid and have no outside influences in your life. One of the most relaxing vacation in years. We travel six weeks a year to the islands and this is by far one of the best. The trip was an adventure worth repeating. No significant negatives except you must remember to have enough cash to pay the Honduras departure tax (about $40 us per person) and the fee to have the groundskeeper run you into town I felt was overpriced considering people from the island 50yds away went back and forth all day and I am sure do not pay $60. Other than these two issues, I can't say enough positives.
The Pineapple House is the perfect place for people who want to get away from the commercialized vacation and get to know the locals in a safe, comfortable environment. This was our second trip to the Pineapple House and certainly not our last. What we love about this place is the ability to be by ourselves on our own private beach, reading books, and relaxing. What we really love about this place is if we want to interact with people, we call Herman, who comes over in his boat and picks us up and brings us to town or restaurants on the Cays. If your own private beach isn't quiet enough, Herman will bring you to an undeveloped island for a few hours where you can rest in hammocks. Don't want to cook, call Trish or Dave and they will have Christy and Melvin come over and cook you dinner with fresh fish that Melvin caught earlier in the day. If scuba diving is your escape, Bogan from Utila Cays Diving will pick you up on your dock. More than likely there will be less than five divers including dive master Mike. It doesn't get much better than this at the Pineapple House!!
Dave and Trish are wonderful host. They took care of all our needs. The pineapple house is the perfect beach front home to get away from it all. The reef right outside the door was outstanding for snorkeling. The valet diving service was a plus, just walk out on your own private pier and a short boat ride to the best diving in the world. We can't wait to return.
Thanks to anyone that made Utila a unforgettable experience.
We just returned from a fantastic week at the Pineapple House. Dave and Trish were very helpful, as was everyone we encountered. The house is beautiful and had everything we needed. We were pleasantly surprised to find a stash of board and card games which we enjoyed in the evenings after dinner. The bathrooms are spacious and the living room sofa was frequently covered by five large napping teenagers. Very comfortable! We were able to manage without AC until bedtime but it was warm when we were using the gas stove for dinner.
The snorkeling off the beach and nearby dock were the best we have ever experienced and we've been to many places. The beach is a combination of sand and coral, so shoes (flip flops) are needed. The only drawback was the trash and garbage along the beach. One day after the wind changed direction refuse (including baby diapers) drifted in from the Keys on the beach in front of the house. Orlando cleaned it up late in the day. I also missed the pads on the lounge chairs. And yes, the sand flies are present. The best defense is baby oil. The sun decks on top of the dock made for beautiful sunrise and sunset viewing!
Chef John prepared two excellent meals for our family that made our stay especially memorable. It was a treat to walk into the house upon our arrival to see Chef John ready to serve us. We also enjoyed a family-style meal made the house for us by Christy and Melvan from the fishing village on the Keys.
Our trip to Water Cay was also a highlight. There were a few other people there when we arrived and it was peaceful. Then the party boats arrived with blaring music. My suggestion if you want a quite island experience - go early and leave before noon.
Utila is a safe and beautiful island. Our family would stay at the Pineapple House again.
Eight of us just returned from a fabulous week at Treasure Beach on Utila, staying at the Pineapple House and its sister property, the neighboring Coral House. (http://www.vrbo.com/430429)
The properties are extremely well equipped, and maintained by an excellent property management team, who see to your every need, from provisioning the houses with food and drinks of your choice before arrival, to making sure you can get to places you want to visit during your stay. A team like this is vital at a vacation property of this type, located a 20-minute boat trip from Utila Town. The houses are nicely decorated and feature spacious bedrooms and baths, as well as a massive wrap-around porch where you're likely to spend a lot of your time. Each house has its own private stretch of beach, and they share a nice dock, complete with a great rooftop sitting area perfect for drinks at sunset.
The properties couldn't be more perfect for water lovers. Snorkelers will find a reef teaming with life right off the beach, with an easy entry and exit by ladder from the end of your own dock. Scuba divers and snorkelers alike can enjoy the amazing services provided by Utila Cays Diving. They will pick you up at your own dock each morning, for a mix of diving the nearby reefs, and those a short ride away on the north side. They take care of all your gear from the beginning to the end of your trip, even rinsing and hanging it to dry right at your house at the end of your stay.
It'd be easy to have breakfast, lunch and dinner at your own house each day, but other options include a short boat ride over to the Utila Cays for lunch or dinner, or a longer ride to Neptunes for lunch, followed by drinks on their nice stretch of beach. Boat trips into Utila Town can be arranged as well, and it's worth at least one trip to explore the eclectic village. Other adventure options include kayaks, included at the houses, and stand up paddle boards from Utila Cays Diving. It's an easy and fun 15-minute kayak trip to get over to the Utila Cays for a look around. For a day trip, consider arranging a boat ride to Cayos Cochinos, where you can have lunch at a Garifuna fishing village, and snorkel and dive in the marine park there.
In short, if you want to get away from it all for awhile, and don't want to go to an all-inclusive resort or big hotel, the Pineapple and Coral houses of Treasure Beach are just right for you.
We rented the Pineapple house in Jan 2015. Our group was two families. My family was 2 adults and 3 small children (5, 2, 1) and the other family was 2 Adults and 1 small children (6, 4).
The boat ride from Utila is in a dorry (about a 20' boat with bench seats). Be prepared to arrive wet depending on the size of the seas (they were very high when we left for the house, luckily we had life jackets for the kids with us).
The house shares a dock with three other houses (the coral house and lavendar house). These three houses are fairly close together but while we were there they were empty. The beach was full of coral rock and garbage. The palapa umbrellas were dilapidated and the chairs had no cushions on them like in the pictures. See my pictures. The beach has been left unkempt and is basically unusable for lounging. If you want to walk on the beach bring sandals (like some tevas) or water shoes. The coral starts very close to the beach with some sea grass and scattered rocks in the space between the shore and the coral. The snorkeling was excellent and we were able to snorkel everyday with our boys (the highlight of this rental).
The rental house is nice. It is 4 bedrooms but the two downstairs rooms are separate from the main living quarters (you have to go outside to get to them) and they have a full bathroom and the washer and dryer. The upstairs kitchen was adequate and it had a large table that held our large group easily. The beds were all very firm to the point of being uncomfortable. The AC units are all wall units with the exception of one room being a mini split. The wall units are very loud especially the one in the main room. All the rooms have ceiling fans. Both bedrooms up stairs have large bathrooms.
The sand flies are there. The first couple of days they weren't too bad because there was a good breeze. The last few days the wind died and the flies came out. The flies are on the veranda in the evenings and we had to close the windows because they come in through the screens.
The boat ride out is the same as in and when we left it was raining. Again be prepared to get wet and change before you get on the plane.
Dave and Trish and the others that they use to manage this rental were very friendly and helpful. I wish we could say we were going back but it is unlikely. Not a good destination for families with kids.
When you stay at Pineapple House, you will experience the best Utila has to offer!!! With its spacious, tall cathedral ceiling in the great room, modern appliances, spacious bedrooms, sumptuous bathrooms, incredible wrap-around deck; Pineapple House has everything that a family or couple needs!!! It is perfectly described in the ad; Pineapple House is a perfect home! It is spotlessly clean, with warm, wood floors, and lovely furniture! The water is only steps away from the house! You can snorkel for hours right in front of your home in near privacy on pristine reefs that are filled with an array of fish and marine life. Every morning, my husband and I had our coffee on the lovely dock, and saw a myriad of fish from a moral eel to a small squid to a spotted sting ray swim by! You can enter the water from the beach, and step into a world of blue, illuminated by the sun, and perfect coral heads! Dozens of juvenile and adult angels, parrot fish, bait fish, puffers and so many more varieties of tropical fish will greet you just seconds away from the wrap around porch!!! Every morning we were greeted with the singing of the birds, and the sound of the surf! At night, you can look up and see a myriad of stars in the sky! Utila is reknown for its snorkeling; but we found the people of Utila to be its true treasure!! The people we met started out as vacation friends; but now are family, in our hearts! Dave and Trish Steffan were the perfect hosts; attentive to our every need, and always ready to schedule any activity that we wanted. They not only served as our guide to Utila; but also treated us as family. They were perfect!! Our boat captain, Mr. Herman, was incredible!!!! With his warm smile and perfect skill at piloting a boat; he made every trip special and beautiful. Mr. Herman made our trips to town, snorkeling at Water Cay and Turtle Harbor, our day at Neptune Beach, and our fishing trip the highlights of our stay!!! He is not only a one of a kind captain; but also a unique, warm, and caring one of a kind person. He, to us, symbolizes the beauty of Utila, with his warm laugh, great smile, and great perspective about life on Utila. If you go to Utila, you must meet Mr. Herman. He is very special!!! Native Utilians Alexander and Orlando, showed us the real beauty of Utila with their attentiveness, sense of humor, and story telling. You will never forget this special island or his beautiful vacation getaway, the Pineapple House!!!
