Amazing in every way

  • 5 of 5

The Ohage Mansion is exceptional in every way, one of the best house rentals I've ever done. Dirk was accommodating, responsive, and welcoming. The house is even better than the pictures. The garden in the summer was an oasis. Our company rented the house for some of us to stay during the conference, and everyone couldn't believe how remarkable the house was.

Not recommended for people renting this as a “home base” for a wedding or other occasion

  • 1 of 5

We rented this property as a gift for my sister’s wedding thinking it would be a “home base” for family on the wedding weekend. Although this is a beautiful property, I do not recommend renting it based on my experience. The rental agreement states “If there are more than the registered guests on the property there may be an event fee.” After reading this, I contacted the owners and explained my group’s idea for using the house in an effort to ensure our intentions aligned with their terms. Unfortunately the owners failed to indicate our intentions did not align with their idea of how the space should be used and allowed us to rent the property anyway. Instead they waited to confront me about how we used the space at checkout and charged me more money for violating terms of the rental agreement. I proactively sent a message to the owners six months before the wedding saying “To be open and make sure this is a good fit for us both, we do anticipate more than the registered guests stopping by throughout the weekend… Please let me know if and how this would work.” I respectfully paid an event fee after consulting with the owners for one scenario deemed an event, but was never told “no” to having family stop by throughout the weekend. Instead, I was told after checkout we “had an event every day of our stay” and was charged for this. What the owners are describing was chips and salsa on the porch with the groom’s aunt and cousins from California and family stopping by to say goodbye to the bride and groom/cleanup of the house. Rather than making me feel like a paying customer or guest throughout my stay, the owners were condescending and made me feel like a misbehaving teenager. I would not be writing this review had the owners communicated their concerns in a constructive and respectful way and had listened to/heard my side of the story. Hopefully this review illustrates the inflexibility of these owners. They admitted to watching us on video cameras placed in the driveway. If you are considering renting this property as a “home base” for a wedding or other occasion, I do not recommend it whatsoever. Obviously there are two sides to any story and I imagine the owners will respond to this review. Regardless of the owners’ side of the story and response, the reality is they made me feel insulted, belittled, confused, ashamed, upset and despondent after what could have been a very happy end to an important weekend for my sister and family.

Owner's Response: As per VRBO correspondence you were notified multiple times that if there were more than the registered overnight guests at our home it would be considered an event and additional costs would apply. We have had many guests use the property for a “home base” for weddings and family reunions but they were all upfront and honest about what kind of events they were going to have at the house. Yes, you said people may be “stopping by” but you had more than that, you had an event every day and night during your stay culminating with over 20 people gathering on Sunday morning at the house. We rightfully charged you for those events. I’m sorry you felt you were treated as a teenager, but you did not take on the responsibility you agreed to in the contract. When confronted with the facts you said, “it’s too late now” about one event and the others were “organic” as if that excused you from the contract. Had we known about the constant stream of people we wouldn’t have rented to you. You think it’s about money but it’s about the impact on our neighborhood. We live here and you were irresponsible about overseeing your events at our home.

Absolutely breathtaking!

  • 5 of 5

I rented this house for a girls weekend to celebrate my sisters wedding. The Ohage house had a tremendous part of making the weekend memorable. The home has so much history and charm, not to mention it is impeccably decorated. Dirk and Ruth were so accommodating and truly thought of everything to offer. Most of our time was spent gathered around the giant kitchen island while playing music through the sound system in the house. The beautiful dining room was perfect for games such as cranium and cards which were also available in the house. I cannot fail to mention the basement with a large bar complete with karaoke machine. We did at times, although we never had to leave the house to have a good time! The location is perfect for the St. Paul area. We were a short walk to all the attractions and restaurants downtown. I could go on and on about our experience, but I will say my best advice would be to rent the ohage house and experience it for yourself! We all would love and hope to visit again!

Unforgettable

  • 5 of 5

Our son who lives in the Twin cities, with his girlfriend, was unable to make it back home for Thanksgiving. On a whim, we decided to bring the entire family to Minnesota instead. There was a problem: His tiny kitchen and small apartment were not going to be able to accommodate our family of multiple generations... a family who enjoys hanging out in the kitchen and cooking together. Hotels were not an option. What would Thanksgiving be without a home cooked meal? And then we came across Ohage house. From the minute we entered the front door with expansive hallways, high ceilings, a dramatic staircase, we knew we were in for a treat. Elegant, yet homey. Two separate parlors allowing the comfort of curling up with a great book, or playing board games. A surprise lower level with bar, pool table, pinball games and cozy room for watching television made our grandchildren repeat over and over, "best vacation ever"The large dining room with it's round table, allowed for excellent conversation and plenty of platters of food. . Wonderful second floor with spacious bedrooms and very comfortable beds. The kitchen was amazing and beyond what we would have expected. well stocked with every tool needed to create and complete a wonderful dinner. We walked to the science museum, we played football in the park across the street, but mostly just enjoyed the precious time we were able to spend in this wonderful historic home, catching up with each other and listening to the most amazing play lists of eclectic music our hosts provided through a fantastic sound system through much of the house. The convenience of this location being within walking distance to everything, entertainment, great restaurants. The home itself is spotless and clean. We knew that our hosts were always a phone call away. We all had a hard time leaving this most magical home and would love to see it in summer.

Memories in the mansion on Irving Park

  • 4 of 5

The Mansion on Irving Park was perfect for our family reunion. Easy access via MSP, loved the riverwalk, plenty of room to enjoy the house and garden for all. Thanks for the memories. The Smith Family
