About the property

Cottage-Studio w/King bed & Queen futon + addtl.BR, 1 Bath (Sleeps 1-4))

Makalani (Heavenly View) Cottage is a delightfully romantic cottage surrounded by a tropical garden in South Kona's coffee-belt with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. For the adventurous traveler seeking authentic Hawaiian beauty and serenity, you can spend your whole vacation here gazing out over the endless ocean and its incredible sunsets. In the winter, you can spot whales breaching from your outdoor lanai or listen to them singing at night. Awaken to the music of colorful birdsong from papaya, mango and banana trees.

With a perfect year-round climate, perched at 1200 ft. above the sea on the side of Mauna Loa Volcano, Makalani Oceanview Cottage is authentic Hawai'i unspoiled by crowds and resorts. A great location that gives you many options for experiencing The Big Island's natural diversity. From your cottage you are just 4-minutes from the closest beach and 15-minutes to Ho'okena Beach State Park for sunbathing and swimming with dolphins. A 20-minute drive brings you to the famous Pu'uhonua o'Honaunau (Place of Refuge) National Historic Park and Kealakekua Bay where you can kayak to Captain Cook's monument and snorkel with an endless variety of tropical fish and sea turtles. And best of all, you're only 65-minutes from Madame Pele's live action at Volcanos National Park.

Your cottage is tastefully appointed with Indonesian teak furniture providing a romantic comfort reminiscent of Colonial British tropics. Your large open-room (studio) cottage sleeps two luxuriously with a romantic king-size canopy-bed with a memory-foam mattress fit for royalty. There is also a convertible couch-futon which can comfortably sleep two additional guests. You'll have a fully-equipped kitchen as well as dining area for four. A large outdoor lanai with barbeque gives you garden seating with a stunning ocean view. Your detached private bathroom with semi- outdoor shower will provide a refreshing Hawaiian experience with nature.

There is also a detached guestroom/meditation room available which is set in a grove of mango trees overlooking the ocean, called the 'Mango Grove Lookout'. It has a sofa-futon which can comfortably sleep one or two people. Serene and magical, this special extra-room provides daytime privacy as well as an intimate camp-like Hawaiian sleeping experience.

Managed with aloha spirit, Makalani Oceanview Cottage is the perfect vacation/retreat cottage where you'll find yourself surrounded by the natural beauty of Hawaii.

We hope your stay here will be the first of many happy vacations to South Kona and this beautiful island of Hawaii.

About The Owner

I love Hawaii and sharing it with friends and guests, especially those who appreciate the spirit and mana of the island.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2005

Why The Owner chose Opihihale

To be in authentic and natural Hawaii, close to the ocean and untouched by tourists, hotels and resorts.

What makes this cottage unique

I love the ocean and the secluded beaches nearby with the wonderful trails leading to them. It feels like 'Old Hawaiiana'. The sounds of the birds, wildlife and whales singing at night in the winter makes you feel like you're in the great outdoors. The tropical garden and romantically furnished interior provide a unique comfort. Lots of wonderful wildlife to encounter.

Camping with style

  • 4 of 5

We wanted to get away from big hotels chains and corporate rentals for this trip and Harry's Cottage was just the ticket. We love camping in the Pacific NW and this place reminded us of a time when we lived in a Yurt of a different shape. I live with tinnitus and the island frogs at night allowed me to sleep like a baby. The back porch was my favorite place to read, looking up occasionally at the amazing blue ocean. It was really cool to watch a huge thunderstorm form out over the ocean with lightning and winds. I recommend you rent an AWD vehicle as the driveway is a bit steep. The only negative is the location as my wife wanted some solid beach time and this required that we drive for some distance to get to the good ones. A small price to pay to keep my vacation dollars out of the hands of the Hilton's. I would stay here again, my wife would most likely like to be closer to the beaches. Peace.

Beautiful sunset view with a country feel

  • 4 of 5

We really appreciated the “country feel” and privacy of Harry’s cottage, especially while having our drinks and watching the beautiful sunsets every evening.

The cottage is very comfortable and has everything one would need including snorkel gear and beach chairs. We stayed for 2 weeks and in that time we weren’t lacking for anything.

During the first week we heard a rooster at night and the second we heard coqui frogs as well but earplugs were provided. We believed these noises were a small price to pay for experiencing life in the country on the Big Island.

If you are looking for some privacy and a relaxing stay somewhere other than the busy areas of town, we would recommend staying at Harry’s cottage.

Great peaceful getaway from the crowds

  • 4 of 5

The Cottage was truly a wonderful place to relax and unwind. Morning coffee on the Mango hut deck was a great way to start the day. The outdoor bathroom was also a truly nice difference from the norm. The king size bed and satellite TV made for a very relaxing end to our days. The place was set up nicely and the kitchen was well stocked with all the amenities we needed. The outdoor plants were full of fruits of all kinds, and the colors were magnificent. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars was the cleanliness of the Cottage. It could really use a good cleaning, but we were on vacation and could overlook some of the unclean kitchen cupboards and light fixtures. It certainly wasnt a big deal. Harry was a great guy and knew all the great beaches and sights to visit while we were there!

Tropical Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

This was our second time staying at Makalani Cottage, and we will be back again! If finding a little piece of tropical paradise is your thing, this is the place to be. Surrounded by nature, with a gorgeous view of the ocean, away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist scene in town, it provides a serenity like no other. Harry has thought of everything to make your stay incredibly comfortable. Fresh fruit, flowers and a lovely note written in Harry's beautiful calligraphy welcomed us to this beautiful, romantic cottage. We spent every evening sitting on the lanai watching the sunset and listening to nature around us. Our morning coffee was sipped on the lanai or the deck of the little meditation hut in front of the cottage. The location and Harry's great advice led us to many wonderful adventures around the island. Having a well appointed kitchen and gas barbecue allowed us to enjoy many meals in the comfort and beauty of our surroundings. Traveling from Canada we so appreciate Harry's hospitality and the tropical paradise his cottage provides. I have recommended Makalani Cottage, and gushed about it’s beauty, to anyone thinking of going to The Big Island.

Tropical Hidden Treasure with Ocean View

  • 5 of 5

This house was the perfect place for our stay on the Kona side of the Big Island. Harry provided detailed directions that made it easy to find the property. It's a bit of a drive South of the town of Kona which is nice if you're okay being away from where many tourists stay. Staying at Harry's place allowed us to experience more of a local feel of the island. Since we arrived after dark, we were floored when we woke up and saw the beauty of the property itself. The house is set in a tropical paradise! Beautiful plants, flora, and a view of the Ocean. It was like living in a tropical paradise. Private, and the house is tastefully furnished and very comfortable. I was impressed at how clean it was, and had everything we needed. It is clear that Harry is meticulous about taking care of his property and making sure his guests feel like they walk into a little romantic paradise. When we arrived at the house, a light was on, fresh cut flowers were on the kitchen table, and on a side table, along with a note written in calligraphy welcoming us to our temporary home. Nice touch, Harry! Being a little outside of the high tourist area of Kona, it was cool and comfortable both day and night. If you want a great breakfast with a beautiful view, check out the Coffee Shack. It was delicious! This was the perfect place to have as a home base and experience the Kona side of the Big Island. We will definitely stay here again if we visit the Big Island in the future! Thanks, Harry for sharing your paradise with us.
