About the property

Makalani (Heavenly View) Cottage is a delightfully romantic cottage surrounded by a tropical garden in South Kona's coffee-belt with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Pacific Ocean. For the adventurous traveler seeking authentic Hawaiian beauty and serenity, you can spend your whole vacation here gazing out over the endless ocean and its incredible sunsets. In the winter, you can spot whales breaching from your outdoor lanai or listen to them singing at night. Awaken to the music of colorful birdsong from papaya, mango and banana trees.

With a perfect year-round climate, perched at 1200 ft. above the sea on the side of Mauna Loa Volcano, Makalani Oceanview Cottage is authentic Hawai'i unspoiled by crowds and resorts. A great location that gives you many options for experiencing The Big Island's natural diversity. From your cottage you are just 4-minutes from the closest beach and 15-minutes to Ho'okena Beach State Park for sunbathing and swimming with dolphins. A 20-minute drive brings you to the famous Pu'uhonua o'Honaunau (Place of Refuge) National Historic Park and Kealakekua Bay where you can kayak to Captain Cook's monument and snorkel with an endless variety of tropical fish and sea turtles. And best of all, you're only 65-minutes from Madame Pele's live action at Volcanos National Park.

Your cottage is tastefully appointed with Indonesian teak furniture providing a romantic comfort reminiscent of Colonial British tropics. Your large open-room (studio) cottage sleeps two luxuriously with a romantic king-size canopy-bed with a memory-foam mattress fit for royalty. There is also a convertible couch-futon which can comfortably sleep two additional guests. You'll have a fully-equipped kitchen as well as dining area for four. A large outdoor lanai with barbeque gives you garden seating with a stunning ocean view. Your detached private bathroom with semi- outdoor shower will provide a refreshing Hawaiian experience with nature.

There is also a detached guestroom/meditation room available which is set in a grove of mango trees overlooking the ocean, called the 'Mango Grove Lookout'. It has a sofa-futon which can comfortably sleep one or two people. Serene and magical, this special extra-room provides daytime privacy as well as an intimate camp-like Hawaiian sleeping experience.

Managed with aloha spirit, Makalani Oceanview Cottage is the perfect vacation/retreat cottage where you'll find yourself surrounded by the natural beauty of Hawaii.

We hope your stay here will be the first of many happy vacations to South Kona and this beautiful island of Hawaii.

About The Owner

I love Hawaii and sharing it with friends and guests, especially those who appreciate the spirit and mana of the island.

The Owner purchased this cottage in 2005

Why The Owner chose Opihihale

To be in authentic and natural Hawaii, close to the ocean and untouched by tourists, hotels and resorts.

What makes this cottage unique

I love the ocean and the secluded beaches nearby with the wonderful trails leading to them. It feels like 'Old Hawaiiana'. The sounds of the birds, wildlife and whales singing at night in the winter makes you feel like you're in the great outdoors. The tropical garden and romantically furnished interior provide a unique comfort. Lots of wonderful wildlife to encounter.

BEAUTIFUL FACILITY IN AWESOME SETTING, PEACEFUL AND REFRESHING

  • 5 of 5

This was a vacation dream come true from the moment we turned on the lights. We arrived at night after a tiring day and our spirits were raised as soon as we threw the switch. Harry's pictures of the interior don't lie but in reality, the cottage is far better. And the beautiful setting is hard to describe with the lush tropical growth, the view towards the Pacific, and the nightly serenade of frogs. The meditation hut served as a private bedroom for one of our party and the cottage served as a gracious space of sharing for the couple. (romantic doesn't begin to describe the cottage) And, don't laugh, the detached bathroom is not an 'outhouse' but a convenient, well appointed, large bathroom with plenty of hot water for relaxing showers.

We found the kitchen well equipped with all the utensils needed, the bathroom with plenty of plush towels and wash cloths, and a chest of water gear kept in fine shape for the beach and snorkeling.

We were able to meet Harry before we left to thank him in person. He takes great pride in his place and sincerely wants each guest to have the best stay possible. From our very first email conversation, Harry was most courteous with helpful notes on things: directions to the cottage, suggestions on places to visit, locations of grocery stores and markets, and more.

All-in-all, our stay at Harry's Makalani Oceanview Cottage was superb, THE perfect place to end our trip to the Hawaiian Islands. It was hard to leave the cottage.

Mahalo, Thank you, Harry. Peace.

Enchanting place to come back to each day.

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely relaxing stay at Harry's cottage. We truly looked forward to getting "home" at the end of each day of activity, and winding down with the beautiful ocean view and breezes, and the peaceful setting of the gardens. Though the owner lives next door (which we found to be an advantage), it is very private, and feels secluded. It is fairly simple, but well provisioned. The Mango hut is a peaceful oasis (and the huge Mango trees are amazing). There were a few mosquitoes during the day outside (for mosquito magnets like me), but no issues inside. I am not sure when we will be back to the Big Island, but we will look forward to staying here again.

Private and beautiful cottage and gardens

  • 4 of 5

My wife and I stayed here for one week and had a wonderful time!! We wanted something away from the big crowds with privacy. This cottage satisfies both very well. A rental car is necessary to stay here and driving on the big island is pretty straight forward. I will say that driving at night to the cottage takes full concentration because of the winding roads. Harry is very good about answering questions and making your stay as pleasant as possible. It was so nice to have an arrangement of tropical flowers, fresh fruit and a hand written card welcoming us to the cottage. The cottage has screen windows on many sides and the view to the ocean and garden was very nice. At night there are many many coci frogs singing. This may bother some people (Harry provides earplugs) but it didn’t bother us at all. We slept so well after all of our activities on the island. There are also chickens in the area and the rooster did his thing in the early morning. It was like we were sleeping outside and that was ok! The kitchen was supplied with everything that we needed to prepare our breakfast. And of course there is a coffee pot for Kona coffee. I like that fact that Harry supplies containers for recycling and composting. The detached bathroom was unique and functioned well. The shower worked well with plenty of hot water. I would recommend this cottage for anyone who travels to the big island. It’s not on the water but a very short drive to some fabulous beaches. Make sure to explore all sides of the island because there is so much to see. We had great food and coffee everywhere we went. We took advantage of the gas grill on site and prepared fresh fish for dinner. So nice to have a glass of wine while taking in the scenery. Harry provides beach chairs and snorkeling equipment. We brought our own masks. Highlights were snorkeling at Captain Cook (2 mile hike from the highway). Hiking 9 miles to the active lava field in Volcano NP. The Hawaiian Botanical Garden bear Hilo. Ho’okena Beach, Pu’uhonua Park, Two Step snorkeling, Mahai’ula Beach, Akaka Falls. Too many things to mention. Beautiful property that provides privacy and comfort!!

Camping with style

  • 4 of 5

We wanted to get away from big hotels chains and corporate rentals for this trip and Harry's Cottage was just the ticket. We love camping in the Pacific NW and this place reminded us of a time when we lived in a Yurt of a different shape. I live with tinnitus and the island frogs at night allowed me to sleep like a baby. The back porch was my favorite place to read, looking up occasionally at the amazing blue ocean. It was really cool to watch a huge thunderstorm form out over the ocean with lightning and winds. I recommend you rent an AWD vehicle as the driveway is a bit steep. The only negative is the location as my wife wanted some solid beach time and this required that we drive for some distance to get to the good ones. A small price to pay to keep my vacation dollars out of the hands of the Hilton's. I would stay here again, my wife would most likely like to be closer to the beaches. Peace.

Beautiful sunset view with a country feel

  • 4 of 5

We really appreciated the “country feel” and privacy of Harry’s cottage, especially while having our drinks and watching the beautiful sunsets every evening.

The cottage is very comfortable and has everything one would need including snorkel gear and beach chairs. We stayed for 2 weeks and in that time we weren’t lacking for anything.

During the first week we heard a rooster at night and the second we heard coqui frogs as well but earplugs were provided. We believed these noises were a small price to pay for experiencing life in the country on the Big Island.

If you are looking for some privacy and a relaxing stay somewhere other than the busy areas of town, we would recommend staying at Harry’s cottage.

Great peaceful getaway from the crowds

  • 4 of 5

The Cottage was truly a wonderful place to relax and unwind. Morning coffee on the Mango hut deck was a great way to start the day. The outdoor bathroom was also a truly nice difference from the norm. The king size bed and satellite TV made for a very relaxing end to our days. The place was set up nicely and the kitchen was well stocked with all the amenities we needed. The outdoor plants were full of fruits of all kinds, and the colors were magnificent. The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars was the cleanliness of the Cottage. It could really use a good cleaning, but we were on vacation and could overlook some of the unclean kitchen cupboards and light fixtures. It certainly wasnt a big deal. Harry was a great guy and knew all the great beaches and sights to visit while we were there!
