To be in authentic and natural Hawaii, close to the ocean and untouched by tourists, hotels and resorts.
I love the ocean and the secluded beaches nearby with the wonderful trails leading to them. It feels like 'Old Hawaiiana'. The sounds of the birds, wildlife and whales singing at night in the winter makes you feel like you're in the great outdoors. The tropical garden and romantically furnished interior provide a unique comfort. Lots of wonderful wildlife to encounter.
We enjoyed our stay at Harry`s cottage very much. The place is cozy, comfortable and very romantic. At night you hear the loud mating songs of coqui-frogs and wake up to the chirping of birds. My husband, our 5 year old daughter and myself explored almost the whole island and had fantastic days of snorkeling with dolphins, turtles, moray eels and barracudas at Ho`okena Beach Park (20 minutes from the cottage). You definitely need a car and must be willing to drive and explore. Boogy boards, a noodle, beach chairs, snorkel gear and beach toys are available at the cottage. Thanks so much Harry!
Harry is a welcoming and knowledgeable host. The kitchen is well equipped and we loved the open air shower. We very much enjoyed the tropical flora and fauna, including the coqui frogs who provided a memorable serenade the night it rained! The separate "Mango hut" was a great place to meditate and to catch a little extra breeze. This location provides good access to the Island's southern beaches and other attractions, such as South Point and the new Kahuku unit of Volcano National Park.
I had such a wonderful relaxing time at Harry's cottage. The setting is so beautiful with the Pacific Ocean and the evening sunsets right in front of you. Gorgeous. The cottage had everything I needed to feel right at home. Coffee on the lanai listening to the sounds of Hawaii? Oh yes! The gardens are full of beautiful colors and smells. I love exploring, but makalani oceanview cottage is so relaxing you mite want to relax more and explore less. However, if your desire is the beach and ocean, then use the beach chairs, boogie boards and snorkel gear that's provided. Very nice. The cottage was super clean, and I love the bathroom and great shower. I definitely plan on returning to Harry Cottage. I highly recommend this property for those who want to get away from it all . Harry is very knowledgeable on the big island of Hawaii . He is always gracious with his time to tell you where to go for good snorkeling, sightseeing and exploring. One of my favorite places I went to was the Green Sand Beach. Never been? Must go. The Wednesday Night Market near the volcano was super cool, so glad Harry told us about it. The volcano itself was amazing. lava up to the brim very very cool at night. So thanks again too Harry for telling me about that. Aloha, and thanks for a great stay, I'll BE BACK.
Had a great stay at Harrys... the atmosphere is tranquil! Would recommend anyone to stay! Thank you so much!
This is a great place to stay, a little out of town, about 45 min, but well worth it, central to a lot of different places on the island, lots of privacy, close to many good beaches. the view and the surroundings are second to none!!

We had a delightful, 5-night stay here. The cottage is just as romantic and aesthetically pleasing as it appears in the pictures. I had been a little concerned that it was small and we might feel crowded, but in fact it is plenty spacious with distinct spaces for cooking, eating or otherwise using the kitchen table, lounging, and sleeping. The bathroom is separate but no farther away than it would be to walk down a hallway, and has its own charm (and geckos). I typically get up at least once in the night and didn't experience the few, lighted steps to get there as inconvenient.
As others have said, the setting is lovely, surrounded by lush, exotic plantings. We found Harry to be fun and personable to talk to, and he provided lots of helpful information to help us enjoy the area. He also outfitted the cottage with many amenities, including a DVD player, beach gear, and even two very cushy yoga mats.
This is a great location for getting away from the super-touristy parts of the island and having a more ‘local’ experience. We would love to stay here again!
