Bahía Ballena Villa Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 Bedrooms, 3 Baths (Sleeps 6-8)

This ocean-view villa has breathtaking views of the ocean to the front, and the lush rainforest to the rear and sides. Its name is Canto Del Mar (Song of the Sea, Ridge of the Sea) because you can hear the roar of the ocean every night as the waves rush in. It is located at the very end of a beautiful ridge jutting out into the sea, about 300 feet above the ocean, so the home is far cooler and breezier than anything below. Just minutes from the beach! Less than five-minute drive from beach access points to about five beautiful unspoiled beaches, each with its unique character, some with sea caves. This is a newly constructed, spacious two-story furnished home, where you and your friends/family can bask in the luxury of having your own PRIVATE swimming pool, large covered and uncovered patio areas, and covered balcony. No neighbors in sight! Beautiful ocean views from top and bottom floors and from pool. (home is nearly 3000 square feet, plus 1000 sf patio space).

Convenient and Secluded!: When you’re at the house, at the end of Los Loros ridge, surrounded by toucans, parrots, hawks, eagles and monkeys, you will be in the middle of secluded rainforest, with scarcely any civilization in view. As you watch the wildlife, and see and listen to the breaking surf, you will feel like you are hundreds of miles away from everything.

However, this is a great, convenient location, less than one km off of Costanera highway, very near lots of great gourmet international restaurants (French, Italian, German, Swiss, Indonesian, Estonian . . . ), just minutes from grocery stores and other shopping in Ojochal and Uvita, and a short drive away from the best surfing in Dominical, and many wildlife parks and attractions.

Local Property Manager Minutes From the House!: The local property manager, Moises Solano, is located just minutes away from the house. He will greet you, show you to the house, make sure that you are comfortable and familiar with your surroundings, then continue to do everything possible to make your stay a comfortable and enjoyable one. He can assist you with booking tours, rental cars, advance or forward travel arrangements, as well as handling any questions or problems that could arise during your stay.

This is sure to be an experience that you will never forget.

About Owner

I built this beautiful home with a talented local architect and general contractor, completing it in 2009. I'm from New Orleans, and completely fell in love with this part of Costa Rica about twenty years ago.

Owner purchased this villa in 2009

Why Owner chose Puntarenas

This villa is surrounded by jungle and ocean, so it's entirely peaceful and secluded, but also incredibly close and convenient to everything. The jungle hides the few nearby homes from view, so you feel like you're in the middle of nowhere. But it's only a five minute drive from the main thoroughfare, and close and convenient to all restaurants, attractions, amenities. It also offers luxury at a bargain price. Why stay in a cramped hotel room or little cabina for the same price when you can have this entire villa with its crystal-clear swimming pool all to yourselves?

Great Stay at Villa of our dreams

  • 5 of 5

Karen's home (Villa Canto del Mar) is where my husband and I stayed for 8 nights during our recent honeymoon in Costa Rica. The stay here was so memorable and beautiful. Mo the manager was so accommodating when we asked him if we could extend our stay a few extra nights, he was also so helpful and full of good ideas for us to do. When we left I nearly cried -- because the ocean views from our room and master bath were phenomenal, we could hear the sounds of the crashing waves whenever tide came in, there were toucans in a bunch of the trees right around the pool, and all the restaurants in the area were fun and memorable. There was even live music! When I have a bad day I think of this beautiful place and all the lovely people we met here. I hope we can return.

Owner's Response: I'm happy that it was a special and beautiful honeymoon for you. Many other couples have also had really memorable honeymoons and special anniversaries here! Your Ojochal trip was a great start to the beautiful and adventurous life that you two are going to have together! Best of luck, much love, and come back and see us -- maybe on your anniversaries? Stay in touch.

Ten Days of Solid Bliss!!!

  • 5 of 5

I can't even describe how amazing this place is. If you want people and traffic and high prices, head over to Manuel Antonio and Quepas... If you want peace... Blessed, wonderful, healing peace, this is the place. No honking cars, no traffic, no city noise, bathing suits/clothes optional. Just fragrant jungle flowers, the sounds of the rainforest, swimming in the pouring rain, reading in the hammock, sitting on the deck overlooking the ocean, listing in to the waves crash as you drink a coconut daiquiri. Sleeping under the ceiling fans, sipping wine in the hot tub, and jumping in the pool every time you get even a little bit hot. Shopping at a local market to get the best fresh caught fish, produce, delicious local pastries, and ice cream!!! This home has a beautiful kitchen, and we didn't feel bad having to get the basics for a few bucks at the local store. We knew everything was fresh.

I am disabled, and not able to walk far. (No wheelchair) I brought my service dog, and he also had a blast!

Watch out for reading while in the pool: You can and will still get sunburned, even 3 feet down! The pool was immaculately clean, and yet there was no chlorine smell. The pool man was the only visitor we had besides the property manager and hundreds of species of vocal birds.

We didn't eat out much, it just wasn't necessary, and we were too busy resting to get dressed to go out. Besides, we bought our own gourmet food to munch on and cook up, so it just wasn't worth it to leave.

We were supposed to stay at this house for 5 days, and switch to a luxury condo in Quepos for the next 5 days. After visiting the other place, in advance, we decided switching would be a terrible mistake! Even though it had an indoor pool, and a 180 degree view of the area there, we just couldn't see dealing with the parking, hundreds of cars, big city US prices, and the mentality of a city. We've got that at home.

So we extended our stay here to 10 days, and the longer we stayed, the more we loved it. In the end, we were talking about what it would take to buy it, and retire here. Mo is the property manager. He is a responsive, courteous, and caring person who took the time to sit with us and make sure we were comfy. He took care of everything we could possibly need, and gave us sage advice on which places to see. He's also got friends who can hook you up with local tours, etc.

We drove to Corcovado State Park easily in 90min, and there were lots of great beaches too.

Owner's Response: I am really glad that you guys had a great time here! We were very happy that you extended your stay. Yes, I agree that Mo is the greatest. And yes, I also agree that this is the part of the southern Pacific to be, whether for vacation or retirement. Ojochal and Playa Tortuga and Uvuta are so much nicer and more peaceful than either QUepos or anywhere up north in Guanacaste. Please come back soon.

Breathtaking villa

  • 5 of 5

It was an amazing trip! Your villa is breathtaking -- and it was absolute paradise for us. I couldn't have created a more perfect place in my imagination! We also fell in love with the area; the people were so kind and wonderful. One restaurant suggestion that wasn't on your list was Fiesta del Mar. It's right around the corner and the food was fantastic. Thank you for letting us stay in your beautiful home. We felt safe -- and in secluded luxury the entire time. With things at home a little rough right now, you could never know how restorative this trip was for us!

Best trip ever!

  • 5 of 5

Karen's house was beautiful and just as described. We loved cooking brunch in the kitchen every day, and the grilling out by the pool for dinner a couple nights. We went to the Uvita waterfall two of our days just to climb around and swim. The beaches were all fantastic. We went to Sierpe one day (the weather stayed perfect all day!) and did the boat tour down the Sierpe River into the Pacific, around and past Drake's Bay to Corcovado. Highly recommended! We saw several wild creatures, a flock of scarlet macaws, and swam at the waterfall there too. We ate at Exotica in Ojochal, and it was amazing! Those Canadians have a great and happy attitude, exotic artistic look and feel and the best cuisine we've had thus far, which is saying a LOT! The food at the various restaurants where we dined was all great. We all are hoping that we can come back here in the next year or two.

exeeded all expectations

  • 5 of 5

The description was accurate regarding location, layout and amenities but did not do justice to the amazing location and people of the area. It was so SAFE and given that we had never traveled to Costa Rica we were a bit concerned, the property was clean and beautifully private! Karen (the owner) gave us guide book that directed us to all the BEST places! the Food of this region was world class. We celebrated our 30 year anniversary and had a BLAST. we saw Toucans, monkeys, sloths. Iguanas and many types of birds. The beaches were seriously beautiful, and it was fun to watch the kids surf. We explored caves and a local fisherman taught me how to clean a shark, a feat given we did not speak each others language. We hiked in the mountains and the trees were spectacular. Don't bother to bring anything warm to wear and bring your hats and sunscreen. If Costa Rica is on your bucket list - GO! it was extremely reasonably priced and everything we hoped for. Thanks Karen! Cheers!

Bitter sweet experience.

  • 3 of 5

The house looked nice and is well constructed but in need of TLC. The gardens are very well tended. The beds are comfortable. The view from the balcony is beautiful as well as the forest.

We had good responses from Geiner the manager and Karen to a certain point.

After our trip we submitted a personal review directly to the owner Karen. With stated the minor issues and some major issues with had her rental. During our stay some issues were responded quickly and others where it seems treated as unimportant. The owner’s response to our review was that she was disappointed of our negative attitude about her rental and that in Costa Rica it is the norm to have water, electrical and pool issues.

We feel that the write up on HomeAway was misleading in a way to think that all would be as described and everything would be in good working condition. When things started breaking up, blender, coffee maker, bathroom pipes leaks, toilet leak, 2 big pool issues and stove not working at all etc. this was not what we where expecting and it was worry-some to us. We had to buy a few things for

the kitchen (juice glasses, utensils, wine glasses to make a set of 4 and buy a can opener and wine bottle opener). The outdoor’s furniture was consisting of an unstable table and 4 chairs where very old. The stove issued was adequately resolved in a couple of days. The pool issues where resolved too after a few days not being able to use it.

In her reply to our review the rental owner stated that she added extra requests at no charge. We requested only replacements or repairs of some items that where not in good working order as they where part of the rental for us to use: a blender, coffee maker, stove repair and pool repairs. We where in no way unreasonable.

The deficiencies of the rental did in no way ruin our holidays but things did not go smoothly. Costa Rica, is extremely beautiful. The beaches are stunning, the people very nice. We tried many restaurants and they where all excellent.

Owner's Response: We are glad that you enjoyed the area so much, the excellent beaches and restaurants, and that you appreciated our beautiful views and gardens and our comfortable beds. Since your stay, we have purchased 6 new wooden outdoor patio lounge chairs, in addition to the outdoor dining set, to make the pool area even nicer, I'm sorry that there were any inconveniences to you at all during your two-month stay, but for such a lengthy time period as you stayed, I don't think it is considered unusual to have one short electrical outage and one short water outage. Services were restored very promptly, as Costa Rica utility companies are improving all of the time. My property manager did put out extraordinary efforts to accommodate your extra requests throughout your stay, including doing your very detailed grocery shopping and bringing in catered prepared meals for you at no extra charge (for two nights in a row when you didn't arrive on the day you were expected), accommodating the needs of your little dog, replacing the "made in China" coffee maker and blender with more expensive European models, and bringing additional plateware so that there would be all-matching colors for a service for 8 (although there were just two of you). Unfortunately, the stove had an unexpected electrical problem one day, but the property manager was there the same day to fix it, and you did comment to us about how rapid his response was. We have taken advantage of all of your suggestions to improve the quality of a stay at Canto del Mar, and trust that if you return you will have a lovely stay.

I first started coming to this beautiful part of Costa Rica ten years ago, and fell in love with the natural secluded surroundings, the gorgeous beaches, and the teeming wildlife. I don't think that there is any part of Costa Rica that quite compares with the Southern Pacific. Ojochal is a charming rustic village containing gourmet European restaurants in the jungle. Uvitia is the nearest larger town, containing banks, grocery store, bars, restaurants and entertainment. Dominical is a surfers' paradise. Fun Hip village for surfers and those who like to watch them, Great beach!
