We are the owner-builders of Shearwater. We live where we want to vacation. Celeste has always wanted a home by the sea since she was a teenager.
Michael Lowes purchased this house in 2002
Front row seats are hard to find. When the right home site came available we took it.
This wonderful home is absolutely perfect for a multi-generation vacation. Everyone has room to spread out with a large common area when all want to be together. Very clean home! The kitchen is well equipped and lots of shelf space for food supplies for a large group. Beach access is perfect and the large decks are amazing. Might want to bring a flashlight for nighttime access. Our large family was so happy with this home and the owner was wonderful to work with.
This was our family's fourth time staying at Shearwater and we're already planning our next! We love that we can all (10 of us this time, but we've had as many as 14) sit around the table and eat a meal together...but there's room for everyone to have their own space as well. The owner has done several improvements in the last year including new furniture, tv, drapes and futons. Last winter the high waves took out the steps down to the beach, but they've already replaced the steps and we love wandering down the beach to the tide pools, building sandcastles and having a bonfire at the end of the day. We've always spotted whales and this time the seals were out (checking out the surfers we think!). The hot tub is perfect for the rainy/stormy days...we can't say enough about Shearwater! Last Christmas we had our 70+ parents join us, along with grandbabies as young as 1 and everyone had a super time! Michael was even kind enough to set up a Christmas tree for us to decorate. He's very easy to work with and so responsive to guests' needs. The location is perfect too...situated between Lincoln City and Newport and only a couple of miles from Depoe Bay. There's a little grocery store and coffee stand just a couple of blocks away, as well as Fishing Rock State Park within walking distance (a lovely walk/easy hike) with amazing views!
Our extended family has been taking a weekend trip to the Oregon coast for 16 years. This house was by far the biggest and most comfortable in terms of space. The furniture is very worn and could use more lounge chairs in the main living room. The pool table was great. The bedrooms were sort of dark, needed brighter lighting. The hardest part was we always go to a place with a hot tub, this house has one but it is in a steamy, drippy, gross shack on the side of the house that you can't see out of which is a bummer when at the beach. Great deck space and good amount of bathrooms and bedrooms. We are returning this year but hope for some new furniture and some updates because it truly is a beautiful house.
We had our kids and grandkids meet at this house. It was perfect for our family. It gave each family their own space. The location, whale watching and kite flying was amazing. The easy walk to the beach was just what we wanted with little ones. The hot tub was broken the week we stayed so that was disappointing. (only reason for 4 stars) The large dining table was awesome for meals and adult visiting at night. The pool table was so much fun. We look forward to doing this again in the future. I would recommend this place for family get togethers. (We brought baby gates to corral little ones and that worked well)
This home is right on the beach, that is the good news. Here is what we found during our week long stay. 1. Patio windows looking out at the ocean have lost their seals so the view is obscured. 2. The house is dirty and poorly cleaned. The ceiling fans edges have at least 4 years of dust accumulating. 3. The hot tub room is dilapidated and none of us ever went into it. 4. The workmanship in the house looks like a 5th grader built it. 5. The TV in the main floor bedroom has to be 30 years old and not hooked up to the satellite, make sure you bring all of your VHS tapes to watch. 6. Stairs accessing the beach were missing a tread, unsafe to try to get down. There is a safer access up the street. 7. Oven was filthy so ran the self clean mode and was rewarded with an oven that did not work on Thanksgiving morning. 8. Owner threatened to throw us out when I called him on the oven. 9. I got a note 3 weeks ago he was sending my deposit back, that is why I waited to write the review. I Did a stop payment instead since the relationship went down the tubes with his hysterical rant on Thanksgiving morning. It is a tired dirty house with an owner who can go hysterical on you. Other than that, did I mention it has a great view of the ocean. You can see it from the deck or open the patio doors to see it best.
Good access to the beach however be careful at night - there are no lights going down there. The house is multi leveled - 3 1/2 - which is good in ways but is chopped up if you want a group get together. The kitchen was clean but not so much everything else. The home does need maintenance. The first drawback was the owner was there when we arrived and was still cleaning, making beds and hadn't cleaned the hot tub (good that he empties it each time and refills it) but the hot tub wasn't warm enough to use until the next day. The weather was fantastic which allowed 1/2 of us to eat outside each day, otherwise would have been very crowed inside.
Shearwater is South of the Salishan Golf Course and Market Place; North of Depoe Bay, the World's Smallest Harbor and Whale Watching Capital of the World. A short drive to theYaquina Bay Light House and Yaquina Head Light House (Agate Beach). The Cascade Music Festival and Factory Outlet Shopping are located in and around Lincoln City, twenty minutes away. Miles and miles of sandy beach at your front door.
