|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
Swanson House is ideally located on Gillam Bay and the Atlantic on the eastern shore of Green Turtle Cay, one of many beautiful islands in the Abacos archipelago in the northeastern Bahamas.
This spacious home sits high on a bluff on three quiet tropical acres complete with boat dock and private beach. Commanding views of the ocean and protected Black Sound provide both sunrise and sunset viewing.
The village of New Plymouth is just a short ride away, where shopping and casual dining are available. The Bluff House and The Green Turtle Club, on White Sound, are also close by and provide fine dining and night life activities.
Several experienced guides are locally available for fishing, snorkeling and scuba diving. Kayaks are available on site.
We also have a cottage to rent on the oceanfront (House on the Point; VRBO listing #310005). Please contact us for more details and rates.
Our family of four currently resides in Birmingham, Alabama. My mother co-owns the property and now lives in Punta Gorda, Florida, and is a well known island regular. Click 'satellite' on the map below and zoom in to see the property!
Mike Swanson purchased this house in 1984
This has been our vacation home for almost 30 years. We have rented the cottage to vacationers for many years, and have recently decided to share 'The Big House' as well.
Fishing, diving, and beach combing have been our great pleasure here for years, and there are experienced local guides for hire as well. Lately we are just as likely to enjoy relaxing on our three tropical acres, and the quaint village of New Plymouth is just a short walk or golf cart ride up the road. There one can find shops, a museum, and fine and casual dining. If you have a boat, or wish to rent one locally, our dock on Black Sound is available for your use.
Our family trip to Green Turtle Cay was excellent, and the largest part of that was our rental of the Swanson House. The location is perfect, with the beach on one side and the dock on the other. Being close enough to town to walk to restaurants and shops was ideal too. Patricia, the caretaker, and her family were so helpful during our stay. One highlight was when Patricia's son took us on his boat to visit the pigs on No Name Cay and the sharks and stingrays on Manjack Island. The house itself is a delight, not fancy and a little quirky, but completely comfortable and very roomy. Snorkeling off the beach near the cut was pretty good, although we had a little more luck up at Coco Bay. Renting a golf cart and exploring the whole island was awesome. People in town were always friendly, and we enjoyed trying different restaurants every day. We have been to several islands in the Caribbean, and Green Turtle Cay is probably our favorite in terms of overall experience. Without a doubt, staying at the Swanson House was an excellent decision.
Easy to get into town, great dock for rental boat, awesome caretakers. We rented the upstairs house and down stairs house as well for a guys only trip...... Worked great. Plenty of room for everyone. We are going to book again this year with the whole family!
This slice of paradise is THE PLACE! We have been here 3 times and are already booking our next stays. We love the property with its 3 - 4 different private beaches (although all beaches are public in BAHA) and the best access to crystal clear waters of beautiful Gillam Bay plus the Atlantic in front of the house and Pelican Cay across a small finger of the Atlantic. It is located on the only road to town plus has a deep water dock on Black Sound at the back, by the road, as one enters the property. One has incredible sunrises over the Atlantic, beautiful sunsets off the back porch or at the dock, and incredible star gazing and the Milky Way when not cloudy. We have had wonderful times with our family and friends. The property is well kept and maintained, the caretaker is wonderful and close by and the home has all the amenities one could dream of...we didn't even use the satellite tv or movies, there was just too much else to do on the island. It's close to New Plymouth, and shopping, dining and museums. Our cart (from Seaside Carts) is always waiting for us at the dock when we arrive, as is the care taker. During our last stay in July 2013 we observed numerous White Night Blooming Cereus over a naturally formed archway of plants and trees leading to the 'front' of the property (facing the Atlantic ocean side). An outdoor shower enables one to wash off sand and get feet clean to prevent tracking sand into this lovely estate home. Each trip we have brought friends with us and now Green Turtle Cay and Swanson House will have even more returning guests! We recommend menu planning and taking over what your carrier will allow (no fresh anything, must all be frozen or preserved) and fishing from the rocky point at the front on the Atlantic...or going on one of many fishing charters. As we are in central FL its maybe a 4 - 5 hour trip by air and water ferry from our front door to Swanson House...we feel very protective of this property and want to help keep it beautiful and all that's inside this lovely home in tip top shape. The owner is the epitome of graciousness in answering questions and giving advice. We almost don't want to write a review as now we're having trouble booking it when we want it, but it is a special place and worth every cent! ENJOY....this is a one of a kind vacay!
The week I spent at Swanson House with my family and boyfriend was perfect. The house has all of the amenities that I thought I would need/want when I arrived (internet, satellite, DVD, etc) but that I couldn't have cared less about after a couple days. It was wonderful to disconnect and enjoy the ocean breeze while sitting one of the balconies reading, or walking the beach, or exploring the island in a golf-cart. With the super helpful staff at Swanson house there was nothing to worry about and always a friendly face if we had any questions. Scuba diving out on the reefs was incredible and being able to snorkel and fish just off the beach at the house was so convenient. The week was amazing and I often find myself daydreaming about being back under the Green Turtle sun when I am bogged down with work. I can't wait to go back.
Our stay on Green Turtle Cay was everything I could have dreamed of! The island is just the way I remembered it and the Swanson House made the visit even better. It is on a secluded stretch of beach with snorkeling right of the beach. The photos don't do the house justice. The house has all the amenities you could possibly need and we had a great time creating meals in the 'chefs kitchen'. The fishing and diving were outstanding, and the boat dock makes all those activities so convenient. Patricia was a breath of fresh air. She was available for any questions or to help out finding things. I would return again as soon as I am able!
I spent a week here with my family this past summer. It is a beautiful house at a beautiful location. It is very comfortable and homey. The different accommodation options on the property gave us plenty of space. It is close to the little town of New Plymouth and the ferry will drop you off right at the private dock. Everyone around is very friendly and helpful. Right off the beach behind the house, there is a little good snorkeling and you can pick up a few conchs right there.
I'd recommend staying for a week to sink into island time while still having time for venturing out snorkeling, diving, and fishing.
