Robert Winquist has had extensive experience both as an educator and entrepreneur. He has a PhD in Higher Education from the University of Iowa and was a University Professor, Vice President and administrator for many years. From 1993-2007 he served as the President and CEO of Vending Supply Inc., a Nevada corporation that designed and printed and distributed one billion machine vended children's stickers and temporary tattoos. Robert is a Minister of the Universal Life church, who performs weddings on the beach. He has four beautiful sons and daughters and is an avid fisherman. Robert owns a ranch in the Sierra Laguna mountains, east of Pescadero, and enjoys taking guests on tours of the area.
Robert Winquist purchased this estate in 2004
Growing up in a family that loved camping on the Baja, I always knew I wanted to retire here. Somewhere that was easy to get to, natural and pristine. I drove the entire peninsula many times looking for the perfect spot. Whenever I drove through Pescadero I couldn't stop smiling because it felt so right. I honestly believe this is one of those powerful spots on the planet that attracts good energy. Robert's Place is a gathering spot for friends and family that we are happy to share with others.
Surprisingly, one of the daily benefits I enjoy is driving the single lane dirt farm road that leads 1 mile out to the highway. The experience of slowing way down to enjoy the lushness of the crops and the pace at which they grow is its own reward. The standard of courtesy and kindness exchanged between very different types of people as we pull over to make room for each other is a genuine old Mexico experience.
Another hidden benefit which reveals the relaxing approach to living here is Whale Watching - Pescadero Style. You can sit for hours watching whales breach and spout as they swim past in front of the house. On a calm day it is possible to kayak out and sit quietly as a pod of whales passes within a hundred feet of you. Sometimes they linger for days outside of the breaking waves near shore. If you are the adventurous type, borrow a mask and fins and swim out! Welcome to Whale Watching - Pescadero Style!
Vacationing here is like living in a nature sanctuary. Egrets feed in the tide pools. Fishermen cast from shore for Spanish Mackerel and Rooster fish at dawn. And bonfires on the beach are a tradition. This is the Baja I knew as a child.
If you need a place that will host a big group for a low price, this is the place you're looking for. We didn't have any problems, but Robert was always available. I really like the big room with the open kitchen. Everyone can hang out together while some cook and clean. It was great. And the sunsets every night were spectacular.
There is something for everyone at this super relaxed and happy place. The sound of the surf is ever-present, so sleep is deep and refreshing. Everyone in our family enjoyed our time together - even though for different reasons. The kids were in the water everyday, except when the wind was really blowing. Some of us enjoyed billiards in the big room of the main house, where we all shared many happy and delicious meals cooked on the gas stove. We all loved the hot tub under the stars. And the fire pit - oh, so great!!!! Robert has everything set up for maximum convenience without fuss. Everything's wonderfully clean - something I really, really care about. Driving past the acres and acres of basil and soon-to-blossom mango trees, on the 'authentically rural' roads just added to the pleasures of the week. If you go and get a craving for some special snacks, be sure to visit Mini Super Munchies - Robert can tell you how to get there on the maze of country roads. And, very definitely, have at least one meal at Hierba Buena... all organic, graciously served. Oh, and I mustn't forget to add that my brother was not really inclined to join us, because he generally stays at 5 Star hotels. After day 2 of our 5 day stay, he kept saying that no luxury hotel could equal the natural ease and comfort of Dr. Robert's. I completely agree. Sometimes you just gotta chill. We WILL return.
Really relaxing place. Pescadero is a cool community full of friendly people. Fun body surfing waves right out front of Roberts and a point break just up the beach two hundred yards. Robert is welcoming, friendly and full of local knowledge of the area. Also a great story teller and fun guy to chat with. There is a really cool garden restaurant near by and the funky little town of Todos Santos is just up the road about 10 minutes. Planning to head back soon. Thanks Robert!
Our last minute decision to take our 13 year old son to Baja for his first Mexico surf trip could not have worked out better. This fact is primarily due to Robert and his Oasis. Pescadero is of course a beautiful beach (almost private) with great surf breaks only (ranging from right in front to) minutes away. The community around Robert is great but what set the whole experience apart was Robert's Hospitality and the property itself. It was perfect for the three of us in one of the upstairs apartments but the main house also seemed perfect for a larger groups... you have to see it to believe it. The energy and thoughtfulness that Robert has put into the place really comes through. Robert really knows how to be a great host, available when you need him but not obtrusive in any way. We did have a day without the power (it is Baja after all) but Robert provided whatever we needed from water to flush the toilets to ice for refrigeration. I can't say enough good things about our entire week. If you are looking for a great getaway and want to experience authentic and rustic Baja life (plus a few comforts from home) this is the place for you.... Whether you are a family of three or a party of 20 (or anything in between) I would highly recommend Baja Robert's.
My first time in Baja, I was lucky to have been tipped off about Baja Robert's by friends.
Extremely relaxing. The surf lulls you to sleep and is a beautiful backdrop to one's entire vacation. I even recorded the surf on my iPhone and have created a sound-loop with it that I can listen to at night back at home here in the States.
While I was there, I got to experience a roof-top multi-media concert at sunset that attracted a remarkable collection of people from the surrounding community and featured a talented guitarist.
Trips to Todos Santos, Las Palmas beach, the Sierra Laguna mountains showed me the variety available in Baja. I'm definitely going back!
While I would rather keep this place secret, I feel like I really should write a review. We spent 7 days at Robert's at the end of Oct and early Nov. Even though it was post Odile, the place is in great shape. Wood burning Jacuzzi was cooking. Amazing views and rooms were really nice. We rented the apartment and it was perfect. If you are looking at something that is like Cabo, stay in Cabo. This is adventure land. You get a true Baja experience here. That's for sure. It's very quiet. Very peaceful. Yet, this is Baja so bring bug spray and flashlights if you want to be out at night. Robert usually stokes a big fire for the guests to hang around at night. You can get food in town to cook or just goto one of the many restaurants that are about 10 min away. You will need a rent car to get here. Really the things to do are surf, relax, hang around the beach, kayaks and Robert can hook you up with a local panga fisherman to go out for some serious fishing. We caught a Marlin!
Part of the greatness of this place is Robert himself. I feel like he is part of the package. You can spend hours with him listening to his stories about the area and his life. A very wise and interesting fellow that is very hospitable and super fun to hang out with. I just can't say enough about this place. I'm going back in several months!
