California Desert House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + 2 Detached Units, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2-5)

*** Our 2 bedroom house comfortably sleeps 4. The vintage trailers can accommodate an additional 6 people and rent only in conjunction with the house for an additional nightly fee. (Rates are below). You can find a diagram of the sleeping areas in our photo section to help you plan your groups accommodations. ***

You probably already know what you want to do out here in the desert... well, this is the place to do it! Whether you want to wake up early to head out for some biking or world-class rock climbing, or if you want to stay up late and enjoy the stunning night skies, we're sure you'll enjoy your stay at the Sweet 'P' Ranch. We are centrally located at about 3100 ft. elevation on the Mesa in the middle of the Holy Trinity of the High Desert: Joshua Tree, Pioneertown and the Integratron/Giant Rock area. The property offers a particularly gorgeous southwestern view of Mt. San Jacinto and Mt. San Gorgonio's peak, while giving you a front row seat for the sunset every night.

Our 1000 square foot home was hand built with love and a sharp architectural eye in 1952 by the original homesteader of the 5-acre property. The vaulted pine ceiling, large local stone fire place and open floor plan all set the tone for a warm, inviting and relaxing vibe. We are the second owners and have modernized the amenities and spread out on the property while trying to maintain the handcrafted charm that first attracted us.

Patios flow out from the house's 12-foot sliding glass doors to your 5-acre back yard where the fun begins. Relax in the hammock, practice your shot with the Red Ryder, or hit the links on our 2-hole 'All-Terrain' golf course (clubs included). The organic free-form concrete patio is flanked by our guest quarters: a 32' Airstream to the south and a 16' classic Shasta trailer to the north, both of which are available as additional sleeping areas (details below). Amidst all of this, you can enjoy a meal by the 32' arced bottle wall and sculptural pergola and then cozy up to a campfire in the ample fire pit. All the while you'll be surrounded by our growing collection of native cacti and plant species. If it gets a little warm outside you can just turn on the misters and create a curtain of cool around the patio.

Inside you'll be kept cool all summer by a large evaporative cooling system, and warm in the winter by the beautiful fireplace, space and wall gas heaters. There's plenty of seating to enjoy a movie or your favorite program. We have satellite TV and DVR's with a full premium channel selection and NFL Sunday Ticket for the football fans. The round antique dinner table is perfect for a game of cards, dice, jigsaw puzzles, or any of our huge selection of board games. There are also 2 desks if you need to setup your laptop and get down to business.

Love cooking? So do we! The kitchen is fully stocked and ready to feed 20 or more for the holidays and gatherings. If you run out of room on the stove you can fire up the Weber or get the Cajun turkey fryer going. The Sweet 'P' Ranch is set up to convert to whatever you may need. There is a solid stock of spices, dry staples and condiments on hand to share. Foodies will appreciate that we stock organic goods when possible, and there's some good cookware and sharp knives!

For those of you who are trying to live greener, we're proud to say that we are too. The house is cleaned with non-toxic and natural products, compact fluorescent bulbs are mixed in with the low-wattage mood lighting, and the landscape lighting is low-voltage and gradually being converted to LED bulbs as they become available. Water use is conserved with high efficiency sprinklers on trees and plants that are being established while we practice xeriscaping by planting only drought tolerant native plants. The evaporative water cooling system, or 'swamp cooler', uses very little water and is 10-20 times more efficient than an air conditioner. (It's also more effective and cooler in dry climates). Gray water from our clothes washer waters a garden of yucca, ocotillo, and cacti. Yeah, we have a big fireplace, but it's just too gorgeous to do without it once in a while.

We could go on about all the amazing activities in the area, but if you've gotten this far you probably already know! Just in case though, we have a great selection of guide books and info on the High Desert area that can point you in the right direction anywhere from nature to nightlife. Drive 15 minutes southeast to Joshua Tree and the Park for the day, regroup at the Sweet 'P', then drive 15 minutes west to Pappy & Harriet's and honky-tonk the night away. Wake up the next day and get your chakras aligned with a 'sound bath' at the Integratron and you're good to go. You're gonna love it.

Sweet P Ranch: Simply Magical!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Sweet P Ranch for 3 nights and it was an absolute DREAM!

The grounds surrounding the property are beautiful. The show-stopper of the backyard is the sculptural pergola which resembles a Phoenix. It's over 30 feet long and we've never seen anything like it. It's truly an original and very special any time of the day... but especially at night when the sun goes down and the bottle wall is backlit.

There is a comfortable hammock that was constantly enjoyed by our group, and a fire pit that was used non-stop as well. It was so lovely to sit around the fire with our family and friends to gaze up at the stars. The whole backyard set up with the patio is the perfect place to entertain and enjoy.

Inside the house there is just as much to see and appreciate. There is an eclectic mix of furnishings and decorations. We felt like every corner I turned at the ranch should be photographed. It was so lovely. Also, I really appreciated the large restroom that had a fantastic shower with excellent water-pressure. The sky light is also beautiful in there. As other reviewers have mentioned, the wifi, stereo and TV upgrades are all fantastic! It's nice that you can be plugged in if you need to be.

The location of the ranch is ideal. It is close enough to enjoy the National Park, but also go into Pioneertown for Pappy's & Harriets (which I suggest you make a reservation well in advance for). Integratron/Giant Rock are also very close by and we really enjoyed our visit there.

The owner, David, is beyond friendly and happy to help with questions and to give recommendations. To say he went over and beyond to help us with our stay is the understatement of the year.

We will most definitely stay at Sweet P Ranch again whenever we're back in the area. Thank you for a great stay!

Fun and funky, quiet location

  • 4 of 5

This is a fun place to stay in the desert. Very mid-century and very funky! Almost everything was original in this place. The kitchen was very well-stocked--we made all of our meals there and didn't lack any supplies. Our three young boys (8,5 and 2) loved the location. The desert landscaping is so fun and the expansive patio was great, even for an Easter egg hunt! You can tell the house is loved. The only complaint that we had was that the bed in one room was uncomfortable and some of the vintage furniture was coming apart, so it wasn't that comfy. Otherwise cool place to stay in the country outside the cute town of Yucca Valley. The owner was very responsive and helpful.

Good Vibes, Great Views

  • 5 of 5

The Sweet 'P' Ranch was perfect for our annual friends reunion. There were ten of us all together so we rented the main property plus both the trailers and it worked great with room to spare. The place has a great cozy, desert bohemian vibe and really good energy. Great stereo, comfy couch, and neat decor. The fire pit with sweeping views of the back of the San Bernardino mountains and the valley at sunset was appreciated and inspiring to all. And David, the landlord, was very responsive and a pleasure to work with. The only negative I can think of is that is is a little far to the park (Joshua Tree), but it makes up for it with it's quietness, space, and solitude. We will likely be back again next year.

Cozy and adorable desert swelling

  • 5 of 5

Loved this place! Had a ton of character and felt very warm and homey. The fireplace is beautiful and comes in handy on those cold desert nights. The kitchen had everything we needed for meals. Speaker system was great for music. The views from outside were awesome and the firepit a great place to watch the sunset. Friends stayed in the airstreams as well and were happy and cozy. And David is totally on the ball and a sweetheart!

Great winter getaway at Sweet P!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at Sweet P. We were 4 adults and a (well-behaved!) 3yr old. We had plenty of space, with privacy in the bedrooms and plenty of comfy hang out space in the main room for everyone. We loved the fireplace and all the heating options, and stayed toasty even during a very cold spell. We spent a lot of time preparing tasty meals and found the kitchen was *awesomely* stocked with cook and bakeware - there were even plenty of spices, dry goods, condiments that we took advantage of from past guests. Close to the park and lots of other fun ideas for activities in the comprehensive renters manual. Would definitely return and recommend this to others!

Wonderful Thanksgiving @ Sweet P

  • 5 of 5

Really enjoyed this place. Away from it all , but, close enough. For a change, instead of camping it was a luxury to stay at Sweet P. The kitchen had everything you could want to make a big Thanksgiving feast. The views of the mountains, the views of the bottle wall and structure were very peaceful. We spent our days, cooking and I enjoyed that the kitchen is open and you can enjoy folks at the dining table, in the living room while having a great view of the mountains, the structure and the fireplace. After Thanksgiving, a day enjoying the park was great. The next days were spent seeing the sites outside of the park. The Integratron - can't recommend enough. The Giant Rock and Pappy and Harriet's for great BBQ , atmosphere and music. Loved the stay - could have stayed easily for a week.
