About Howard Search

I am a retired pharmacist now a photographer and my wife is a registered oncology nurse. We fell in love with the outer banks and its beautiful beaches. We welcome you and hope you will enjoy our beach home as much as we do.

Howard Search purchased this house in 2005

Why Howard Search chose Outer Banks

Our area, in particular, is uncrowded and inviting. The famous wild mustangs are frequently seen just north of our location. Villages at Ocean Hill is a beautiful, residential neighborhood but is close to all conveniences.

What makes this house unique

See the wild horses on the beach just minutes away - Rent a Jeep or take a guided tour. Fly a kite, surf (lessons and rentals available), swim in our beautiful ocean or in the community pools. Relax on the decks or front porch swing. Moments spent here are meant to be savored and remembered forever.

Great Beach Vacation House & Location Compromised By Neglectful Upkeep

  • 3 of 5

Overall we enjoyed our stay. The house and location with close, easy access to the beach, the beach side community swimming pool, the Currituck Light House and the end of the paved road / entry to 4 wheel drive beach where the horses roam was exactly as advertised. Adding to the experience we had not noticed that the property is in a nature preserve until after we arrived which helped to exceed our expectations. Behind the house one evening a coyote was spotted passing by and deer were spotted grazing in the same area on a couple mornings.

The compromising elements of the experience were soiled linens from previous week(s) that were there when we arrived and remained there all week and evidence of neglectful upkeep of the structure itself.

The whole house would benefit from new paint on both the exterior and interior surfaces.

Before painting the exterior there are numerous pieces of siding and trim that are in a state of decay needing to be replaced.

The roof needs attention as there are numerous water stains on the 3rd Floor ceiling. There was a substantial amount of rain the final day and a half of our vacation. There were fresh water spots on the 3rd floor ceiling and the lens on the Master Bath exhaust fan / light filled with rain water and dripped on the floor. Water also dripped from the ceiling ventilation grille in the Ground Floor "game room" while it was raining. That room also had a very strong moldy, musty odor.

The wi-fi was a source for frustration to those who wanted to use it for various reasons. Data moved very slow and people frequently got kicked off and had to log back on.

The water heater was a little undersized for the demand, but it worked. The air conditioning and ceiling fans worked well to keep us comfortable.

We were there to enjoy each other and the outdoor environment of Currituck and Corolla and rest our minds from every day life back home, not to hang out in and around the house all day every day. Those goals were accomplished.

Great location!

  • 4 of 5

We enjoyed the close proximity to the beach access, the roomy upstairs, the comfortable bed rooms on the top two floors, and our ability to have our pets with us. The ground level was spacious but very musty smelling, and the outdoor shower could not be locked from the inside while in useOverall, we would stay at the house again for the advantages, but wish the whole home had been in as fins shape as the upper two levels.

Spacious and close to everything

  • 5 of 5

This place made really made our vacation. There were only 4 of us with 3 dogs but there was room for so many more. However, the location is so close to everything in the Corolla area that you'll find yourself frequently away while you explore OBX. The proximity to the beach is fantastic and with a very short walk you can find sand between your toes. Also with a short drive you can find a number of restaurants, groceries, markets, and family activities. One of the best things is that just around the corner is a nature preserve with a beautiful view of the sound.

This is a great place for a casual getaway with family and/or friends. I've seen other reviews mention the musty smell on the ground level, sand in the hot tub, and other worn out/outdated aspects of the location. To those "issues" I say this:

1. It's the ground level of a beach house, it's going to smell musty. Besides it's a small area in between the carports with a couch, foosball table, and half-bath so you won't be spending a lot of time down there anyway.

2. It's a near-beach property in OBX, if you have an issue with sand you probably should pick another vacation spot. You'll track sand everywhere you go. We didn't have an issue with the tiny amount of sand in the hot tub, it didn't ruin the experience.

3. The property could probably use new carpeting and an update in decor. But in no way do those things deter from an overall positive experience. Once again, this is a casual place for a casual getaway. If you want something fancier you're going to have to pay more for somewhere else that will provide the same access to the surrounding restaurants and activities.

Pick this place if you are looking for a relaxing vacation with proximity to everything and space to move about.

Less than impressed.

  • 1 of 5

The house itself, structurally, was is good enough shape. Although, outdated, and worn in many areas. But I understand that weekly rentals get a certain about of wear and tear. You must also understand that this was my first weekly rental of this type. I was expecting a better experience, and was over all disappointed. I would also have to say that I was negatively surprised that we either had to rent bath towels, or bring our own. Also, none of the beds were made. Although the bed linens were supplied, they were in a plastic garbage bag, thrown on the floor, of the 1st landing.

Although a water cooler was advertised, there was none. The local water literally stank of chlorine, so we had to purchase enough bottled water so that all in our party had drinking water for the week.

The first floor was musty smelling, and reeked of mold. The outside of the house was grimy, especially around the window frames, sashes, and panes. ALL of the windows were exceedingly dirty, and nasty. Immediately surrounding the house was derbies ( Old hot tub cover, broken and worn out patio furniture, roof shingles... etc...).

Although there were 5 televisions provided (one in the living room, and 4 bedrooms) only two worked on the cable system. Both in bedrooms. The one in the living room did not.

When we first arrived, there was an overflowed toilet, and we had to hunt for the only plunger in a three story house.

We'll probably return to the area for vacationing, as we enjoyed the general amenities of the islands. I highly doubt we'll ever return to that particular property.... I DO know this, we'll do a lot better vetting the properties.
