The cabin was the perfect place to get some much needed change of scenery from the Arizona desert. The property was beautiful and peaceful as it was completely snow covered and the lake was frozen and also snow covered. The cabin was cozy and warm from the wood stove. There was also a lot to explore in the area with a relatively short drive. The views on the drives alone are amazing, so you may just keep driving and driving!
Would definitely recommend for a winter vacation!!
Peaceful, one-of-a-kind place
A friend and I had the good fortune to stay for 5 weeks at this beautiful, peaceful, one-of-a-kind place. The log cabin was clean, roomy, well appointed, offering a comfortable and cozy place for rest and relaxation. We enjoyed walking, canoeing, swimming, and some nearby hikes as well. The hike to the nearby waterfall was well worth the effort - it was stunning! The owners were wonderful - friendly, and responsive to our questions, and when they came to stay at their cabin on the lake, were respectful of our privacy and space. It was a great stay - highly recommended! (Note: The nearest store is in Pemberton so you need to bring all your supplies with you.)
Quiet and Private
Our group of 5 enjoyed a comfortable and relaxing Labour Day long weekend getaway at Mike's Gates Lake Log Cabin. With so much private outdoor space there is lots to do; we enjoyed time at the private beach area, canoeing on the lake, swimming, hiking to a beautiful waterfall, and watching the family of deer come feed on the apples from the trees in the yard. The cabin is well equipped with all the cooking utensils you may need - the only thing we were missing was coffee filters, which Mike was kind enough to supply for us. A reusable basket filter for the coffee machine would be a good addition to the kitchen.
Fantastic log cottage near the lake
We had a bit of a job finding the turn off for this, as our 'directions' email was not seen - but for future guests, travel towards D'Arcy and when you see the Birken sign, take the next immediate left (a few feet away) over the railway line and down into the field and the log cottage.
The cottage is in the photo, and the one you rent is this cottage - there is another that the owner uses on occasions by the lake which is a five minute walk away. You have full access to the lake, and he kindly leaves an assortment of boats (canoe/ 2 * pedalos / larger 'tinny' etc. Plus a boat dock / chairs/ paddles etc etc. )
We found the cottage to be a good six - it would easily accommodate 5 - 6, especially as most activity is outside, This is a very large property - I believe over 100 acres, so there is plenty of room to explore with kids - hunting butterflies and the like. We took along a bow and arrows and a target for archery practice, plus our own fishing boat (electric kota and not too big) , and could launch it by the water. There is no real slip as such, but we could lift it in.
The house itself was very clean, BBQ worked ok, and shower was fine. As other people have said there are NO condiments at all there - bring your own.
The train does go by a couple of times a day - however, we liked it - apart from the one that went by at 1am one night, blowing it's horn. All part of the fun.
There is no phone signal, but you can log onto the cabins wi fi, and use skype etc. Internet was good - cable TV a bot sporadic and often lost signal. Maybe it just needs realigning.
Overall a great cottage that we will use again.
A great place to feel the nature
I stayed at this property along with my wife and 7 others plus a toddler. We had a great time enjoying the log house and the green surrounding around. The house by itself was very interesting and kept in great shape. The utensils, washrooms, kitchen etc were clean and in perfect working order. Mike had shared every possible detail we should know . The kid had his best time venturing the house , fireplace and the various other props he found in the house. We had done pedal boating and hiking around the property . there is an apple tree just in front of the house where deers came in the evening to feed . it was such a nice experience. There are options for hikers who wish to explore waterfall and mountains. Wifi is available along with TV and music system equipped with Apple TV. I recommend this for groups who wish to get away from the routine city life and enjoy the serenity of a beautiful lakeside place.
A little slice of paradise
A charming and peaceful location with a cozy log cottage. Stunning scenery. Very unique experience. The property and lake are gorgeous. Beautiful fields surrounded by snow capped mountains. The cottage was well equipped with a kitchen , BBQ, and dock by the lake. The location has alot to offer. We enjoyed hiking and mountain biking in nearby Pemberton and Birkenhead Lake Park. Our favorite moments were at the cottage, sitting by the orchard and swimming in Gates Lake. I can't wait to return.
