'Okika Lani sits at the south end of Kealakekua Bay on a private road with spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, the Captain Cook Monument, and crescent shaped, white sand Ke'ei Beach.
Enter the gate at 'Okika Lani and walk into an inner courtyard of Bamboo Palms, orchids, and tropical landscaping. Follow the path to the main house. A reclining Buddha resides on the entry table and greets all visitors when they walk through the front door. High ceilings, an open floor plan, and the sound of waves breaking against the shoreline beckon visitors into this spectacular Hawaiian home.
A wall of glass and sliding doors opens from the central great room onto a tiled porch. It's just a few steps down to the patio, private pool, lawn, magnificent bay and ocean views. Watch the morning dive boats anchor across the Bay at the Captain Cook Monument while taking your local Kona coffee and fresh papaya by the pool. Or marvel at the resident pod of Spinner Dolphins leaping and cavorting in the pristine waters while no one else is around to see.
'Okika Lani was designed by an award winning architect in the traditional Hawaiian style of post and beam construction, vaulted ceilings, and a spacious, open floor plan. A large kitchen, great room, and beautiful master suite all grace this stunning home. Screened lanais on both ends of the house offer airy opportunities for private dining or simply relaxing out of the tropical sun. A substantial master bath boasts oversize shower, walk in closets, soaking tub, and skylights.
A separate guest cottage, accessed from the inner courtyard, also features two bedrooms (one bedroom with a king size bed the other bedroom with two ex long twin beds), shared bath, screened lanai, ceiling fans, and guest privacy.
'Okika Lani represents the epitome of elegance and seclusion amid the splendid tropical setting of Kealakekua Bay. The home's orientation to the sun and the sea make every sunset a picture perfect centerpiece for the perfect day. In the evening, try to catch the green flash of sunset, from the pool, lanai, or great room, and sip the perfect maitai at the end of a perfect day in paradise.
Aloha and Enjoy.

'Okika Lani was built by a U.S. corporate executive and his wife who found themselves in the unique situation of having to commute to Australia at least two times a month. Hawaii was a natural stopover. A dear friend referred them to the spot and recommended they build here as a place to rest from long travels. The rest of the story, as they say, is history.
Originally, 'Okika Lani was chosen for its seclusion and spectacular beauty. Kealakekua Bay provides an incredible opportunity to get away from the hustle of modern life. At the same time it is the essence of real living and an opportunity to reconnect with the soul. It has tremendous historical significance to the State of Hawaii and the Native Hawaiian Community, and for all who visit this special place, it has a life changing influence.
'Okika Lani provides an opportunity for seclusion amid the most spectacular tropic setting. Proximity to civilization maintains the security of modern services, while the sense of remoteness allows one to completely unwind from the tensions of modern society. The spectacular setting gives one a sense of peace, serenity, and complete relaxation.
This has been our third stay at Okika Lani and we keep coming back because it is so beautiful and easy. The house is well appointed and well taken care of. Easy access to kayaking over to Captain Cook's Monument and the best snorkeling around. The sunsets from the lanai are postcard worthy.
Our family of four enjoyed the wonderful sunsets each night. The teenagers loved the pools. the little beach about a 15 minute walk down the lava rocks was a great night relaxation spot, with great turtle sightings. The kitchen and linens were more than sufficient. We even used the boogie board one day. The space just feels relaxing and open. So glad we got to stay.
Goods: House, space, pool, ocean direct view, sunsets, walkable to kayak renting, beach down the way we walked to ( little road across from house and then road or lava rocks to the public access for small salt and pepper sand beach ), turtles, dolphins, Annie's burgers close by, donkey ball chocolate close by, rays bbq on sunday and monday, great snorkel near refuge, captain cook kayak so close- no guide needed, good internet, and no mosquitos.
Keep in mind: 15 minute drive to closest store, 45 to kona, 1:15 to Hapuna beach, no direct access to ocean in front of house due to large lava rocks( but my kids found a way), few restaurants or fish shops near by. Once we relaxed and decided Kona wasn't so great for food we starting grilling fish every night and ended up loving the location so much more.
Other reviews nail it. I now have stayed in the main house and the back bedroom. Both have benefits. Private pool and view. Best snorkeling very close.
I recommend this property to anyone looking for an idyllic out of the way location with top notch amenities. Very quiet area with spectacular views of Kealakekua Bay from the veranda, from where we saw a whale on our first morning. The property has two buildings, a main house with an expansive master suite and the living areas and kitchen, and second house with two bedrooms. The master suite looks over the yard and ocean. We enjoyed being off the beaten path; this would be less ideal for someone wanting to regularly be in Kona or other touristy towns as its about a 10-15 minute drive to the main highway. The kitchen was lavishly equipped, including cooking supplies (spices etc) and we enjoyed preparing our own meals and eating on the veranda two or three nights during our stay
What a beautiful location. Right next to both of the best snorkeling beaches. The home is lovely with a large kitchen and dining room and wonderful tables on the lanai to eat and read and create on. It's like being in a botanical garden and sleeping to the sound of waves is so soothing. Thank you so much for a perfect vacation.
We've stayed in this property before, so everything was very familiar to us. The view, peacefulness, and the lack of noise (other than the crashing waves) simply cannot be beat. This is why we love this property! If you feel like staying around the house, that's always an option. There are plenty of places to walk around, go swimming/snorkeling/kayaking locally if you don't want to get in the car. Although the weather was not the best for us during the stay, we were always content with just sitting and reading or looking out at the view from the back porch. We saw LOTS of dolphin passing to/from K-bay. All week we watched for whales - although it was a bit early in December, we finally saw a pair just before we left for the airport on our trip home - this was from the back yard! Just as before, we had a really relaxing time here - every morning we sipped our coffee and sat in chairs right at the back edge of the yard - looking at the ocean. Gosh, what a wonderful heavenly place! Thank you to Shelley and Steve for sharing this precious family treasure with us.
