I am a descendent of one of the founding families of Sandwich. Sandwich staged a re-enactment of the 1600s in the historic village and my daughter and I joined the fun pictured here with an actress portraying my ancestor Deborah Wing who is on the original list of founding families and the only female head of household. My grandparents had the original beach house built on land that was in the family. At that time there was no running water or electricity in the house. We had a pump at the sink and an outhouse when I was a child. Part of the outhouse still stands near the road and used as a shed now. I am very active in the community and a strong advocate for beach replenishment and historic preservation.
Laura Wing and/or Jen Falk purchased this house in 1920
The property certainly has been modified over the years and is now a modern home while retaining much of the character of old. The fir floors in the center of the house are the original floors of the cottage and after sanding and polishing are still lovely.
The rest of the house is basically new as of 2011. I spend time myself there in the winter and enjoy the solitude, wildlife, and open skies.
The house is situated on Springhill Beach, a private beach close to the Cape Cod canal. You can walk down the beach towards the canal for about a half mile and pass all the homes on this beach and enter into the undeveloped salt marsh of the town. You will have to turn around at the Old Harbor inlet where you will see the well-known boardwalk that crosses over the salt marsh open to the public. The quaint downtown Main street of Sandwich is about 3 miles from the house with easy access to the mid-cape highway to takes you into Boston about 60 miles north of Cape Cod. On week-ends there is train service from Hyannis (20 minute drive) to Boston and back. We are hoping that soon that train will stop at the Sandwich train station. The train travels over the canal in Bourne on its way to Boston. Cape cod is a vibrant summer community as a whole with lots to do and see in easy reach from the beach house.
PS, I almost forgot that the whole reason we picked this house is that my husband used to vacation on this beach during the 60's. His memories were very positive and I can say he relived so many of them during our vacation. From bird and boat watching to beach combing and kite flying, to just wiggling our toes in the sand...we enjoyed it all.
Sitting here in the after glow of our perfect beach vacation we are a bit sad that it is over. We always thought living in the mountains was wonderful, but there is nothing that compares to the restfulness and peace of the ocean/beach. And the Wing House made it all the more special. We set up our annual jigsaw puzzle on the table in front of the "wall of windows" where we could keep an eye on the ocean's happenings while fitting in a few pieces off and on through out the day. Each day started with coffee on the deck overlooking the ocean and the nearly vacant beach! Then down to the sands with our kite, chairs and books. It was like our own slice of heaven. The wind blew a constant breeze keeping the house cool, and the bugs away - making beach combing comfortable as well.
We tore ourselves away from the beach one evening for a seafood dinner at Sams, and a second day just for some sight seeing, adventuring and lunch in Barnstable.
The kitchen made meal prep a breeze. It's the first vacation rental I've had where the knives could actually cut something. The fridge was huge and even had an ice maker (critical for a summer vacation). Every room had a view of the marsh or the ocean....I'm pretty sure my blood pressure dropped 10 points while there! We all agreed that it was perfect. Laura, you and Jen were wonderfully responsive to all of our questions and we couldn't have been happier. Of course, nature did help out as well, as we had only one night of rain -- all the rest was perfect sun and wispy clouds. Since we were prepared with our water shoes, even the rocks couldn't stop us from enjoying ourselves.
If you are looking for a relaxing, rejuvenating beach experience this is it. Wish we were back there now!
Thank you Laura and Jen for sharing your great escape!
Thank you - your house and our vacation week were wonderful! We spent a lot of time at the house and on the beach because it was so comfortable and met our needs perfectly. It is nice to stay in a home that is well cared for, lived in and loved; we like all the art and knick knacks around! Plus the history of it all... we enjoyed visiting the Wing Fort house and learning about all (I presume) your ancestors.
We’ve been coming to the Cape for 5 years but this is the first year where we’ve rented a home that has both the salt marsh and ocean. This combination is truly special! And because we were visiting during a new moon, the star gazing was out of this world!
A special thanks for letting us bring our dog who was in heaven being on the beach when it's usually off limits to her during the summer.
Thanks again and we can't wait to visit again.
We've just spent an amazing week in mid-August in this house! Our family loves beach vacations and tropical destinations all over the world are our usual spots. Once in a while we come to the east coast, Cape Cod in particular, to this location in Sandwich and I'm so happy I've found my ideal dream beach house over here!
I agree with other guests that it's clean, renovated, very comfortable, with all amenities and cooking utensils and multiple other supplies you might need in a house. But even though functionality is very important it's not what makes this house so special. The best of it is its unique ambiance, homey and relaxed mood, organic feel inside and out. All of it with salty breezes and serenity of the beach and marshes around create an unforgettable experience!
I hope we'll come back soon and I miss the house already!
My family of four (and small
dog) just came back from a weeks rental. The house, beach, and everything about our stay was outstanding! The pictures do not due this place justice. Everything in the house was super modern, updated, and clean and the beach, although a bit rocky, was perfect for our needs. We already asked abour booking the same week next year!
My sister and I spent a glorious five days at Cape Cod this May. It was even more special than we expected; not just four nights at the beach, but also the experience of this wonderful beach house.
We got a taste of Laura and Jen’s hospitality from several correspondences before we went and there was a lovely note from Laura at the house when we arrived. From the moment we walked in the door we felt “at home”. Even my sister’s dog was so relaxed!
The house is beautiful. The ocean can be seen from three sides. Sunsets and rises were breathtaking. I slept in the bedroom downstairs and my sister in the queen upstairs (she woke to a view of the ocean each morning). Both of us have back issues, but not at this beach house. The beds were very comfortable. The bathrooms were not only remodeled but also had special touches, the kitchen well equipped with wonderful appliances and everything you could possibly need to prepare a meal. There is even a new washer and dryer so we were able to pack light.
When I looked for a place on the water that would let us bring a dog I feared that the house wouldn’t be clean. That wasn’t the case here; everything was spotless and there were no signs (smells, destruction, dog hairs) that dogs stay there. There was even a dog bed which our “Molly” enjoyed using as much as her own.
The deck was so peaceful and we christened a new gas grill.
The most interesting part of our stay was finding little treasures and surprises throughout the home. Artwork, little knick knacks, special treasures from the ocean, a fantastic tub upstairs and great shower down, books and games. You can feel the rich history and what seems like mementos of people who have stayed.
If you are looking for a place where you can bring your family and dog, this is it! Not only do Laura and Jen go out of their way to make you feel comfortable, but it’s a unique beach house which will linger in your mind long after you have stayed there. What a place to make beach memories!
Thank you for sharing your home with us, Laura and Jen.
The town of Sandwich is a quaint, authentic, New England town originally established a few years after the landing of the Mayflower. It has retained most of that character. Downtown has the oldest house on Cape Cod, restored, and accepts visitors. There is also a tea house, working grist mill, the famous Sandwich Glass Museum and the Daniel Webster Inn, a wonderful place for breakfast. Sandwich has a movie theatre, access to the Cape Cod Canal bike path, large grocery store, hardware store and other shops. It is a 20 minute drive from Hyannis and an hour to Province Town.
Other Activities: The house is situated on a private beach. If you walk on that beach for less than a mile you will come to a bird sanctuary and a wonderful view of the well known Sandwich boardwalk. The large salt marsh on the other side of the house is fed by the creek opening at the end of this walk. People fish here all the time and watch the large ships go in and out of the Cape Cod Canal.
