About the property

5 Bedrooms, 4 baths, sleeps 10 adults. Crib and highchair available.

This spacious historic home was built by the owner's grandfather in 1904 and retains its casual, beach home ambiance while offering WIFI and a brand new gourmet kitchen with 48' Wolf range and SubZero fridge. Located 100 steps from the sand of a private beach, the property is situated on a private lane off Craigville Beach. The house accommodates 10 adults comfortably in its 5 bedrooms with both private beach and tennis court (open Memorial Day - Columbus Day). Spacious rooms allow your family to spread out and relax. Massive trees shade the property and provide habitat for chickadees, cardinals, goldfinches, hairy woodpeckers, chipmunks and fireflies, while the screened porches and ocean view deck and shady boardwalk catch the sea breeze and a large yard provides plenty of space for play. If you are looking for a quiet retreat with character and charm that is steps away from beach and tennis, this is one of very few of its kind on the rental market.

History: 'The Blue Shutters' was built in the era when houses were named rather than numbered, so street addresses were irrelevant. The owner's grandfather and great grandfather arrived on Cape Cod for the summer in horse drawn carriages and the property at one time included a barn for the horses, carriage and driver. In the early part of the 1900's this area was called 'Lonelyville' and a windmill stood across the lane that provided water for the handful of houses that stood on this beach - the 'Lonelyville Water Company.' This is unspoiled, historic Cape Cod.

Ambience: This property has stayed in the owner's family since its construction in 1904 and retains the 'away from it all' character that was so important to Victorian era sensibilities: peace, quiet, fresh air and leisure pursuits such as reading, card games, jigsaw puzzles and arts and crafts. The house includes WIFI/Printer-Fax/iPod dock/flat screen TV/cable, but guests are encouraged to 'tune out' and enjoy the board games, cards, art materials, books and beach toys they'll find around the house. Cooks will appreciate the fully quipped kitchen with 48' Wolf range, SubZero fridge and extensive cook books and magazines. Furnished with a mix of antiques and casual beach furniture, the Blue Shutters features all modern amenities but is as casual and reminiscent of a turn-of-the-century get-away as possible. Creaky floorboards included free of charge. The sleeping porch has cots for overnights in the fresh air.

Tennis: Tennis court open Memorial Day through Columbus Day. This clay court is one of the few of its type still remaining. Steps away through the woods, the court belongs to the family but is shared with neighbors and reservations are made to ensure everyone's convenience. The court gets only light use and has lots of availability. 2 child's tennis rackets are available but serious players should bring their rackets.

This house was everything listed and then some. I have never rented a house so stocked with amenities, it was so inviting and nice to know the renters are looking to create such a nice, inviting experience for their renters. From the laundry soap provided to a kitchen stocked with spices, waffle mix, professional waffle iron, assortments of Tupperware, dishes, glasses, kitchen gadgets, incredible wolf stove the linens and all towels provided, it was just a dream. Downstairs was very roomy with plenty of space for a group of 9 adults and 4 kids under the age of 5. Short walk to the beach path, great beach, warm clear water. We used the tennis court frequently. Early on in our stay we had an issue with the wifi, owner was there within 10 minutes to troubleshot and left us with wifi and a bottle of wine. Very pleased with our stay, I think we found a perfect fit.

Sad to leave

  • 5 of 5

Had a wonderful week in your beautiful house. Everything was perfect and we have never seen a more stocked vacation house. The beach was amazing, and the house was spacious and charming. Was great to gather with the whole family. I think the only convenience missing would be a beach box to store beach chairs etc... Thanks again for opening your home to us. We couldn't have asked for a better week.

Owner's Response: We were delighted to have you as our guests! We have been looking for the right beach box and I think it will make a great addition to the deck area to keep things from flying away. Thanks and come see us again soon!

Fun, Steps to the Beach, & Fond Memories Await

  • 5 of 5

Each year our family travels to the Cape and this lovely home. Kids just love the grounds, the house, and the ocean which is just a minute down the path. Private beach, terrific setting - what's not to like? Great fishing, lovely sand beach, and terrific sunsets are all there for you and your Loved Ones. Perfect for trips into town, over to the many ballparks for Cape Cod League baseball, and just minutes down the road to Four Seas Ice Cream! The house was re-modeled with a gourmet kitchen and new interior with lots of additional storage. You'll just need your bathing suit and a cool cocktail is all one needs to enjoy this lovely place. Charming neighborhood, off the main road, so it is quiet with nothing but the birds in the trees to revive your spirit. Highly recommended.

Owner's Response: We're so glad you enjoy The Blue Shutters and that your kids are developing those fond summer memories they will treasure for a lifetime. Glad you mentioned the Cape Cod League - it's one of the oldest baseball leagues in the US I think and a great summer pastime. This coming summer you'll be enjoying that cool cocktail on our new ocean-view deck. Look forward to seeing you!

Perfect space for a family gathering

  • 5 of 5

Our family has rented this spacious and comfortable house for our vacations for several years. We come from different states to enjoy the privacy, space and familiar feeling of the house. The five bathrooms, well equipped kitchen, and large dining room make it easy to be together without feeling crowded. With the private beach just a short walk away, we could come and go throughout the day. The small children can play endlessly in the sand and go in and out of the water as they like Several of us have enjoyed early morning swims in the clear, quiet water. The beach is most inviting for walks and sunsets in the early evening. We were relaxed and refreshed by week's end, due in large part to the space and relaxed feel of the house. We look forward to our return!

Owner's Response: Thanks for this nice note, Elly. This winter we're finishing up a "family nook" to provide another spacious gathering place to birdwatch, play cards or leave a jigsaw puzzle undisturbed. Please come back and tell us how you liked the nook and other updates we've made to make The Blue Shutters more comfortable without changing its vintage feel.

Craigville Beach is considered one of the finest bathing beaches in the region for its wide, white sands, warm Gulf Stream water and calm surf. Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard are visible on clear days and may be reached in a couple of hours from the nearby ferry in Hyannis. Fishing off the beach for striped bass and bluefish can be very productive in season, shells and sea life are plentiful and whale watching is excellent from nearby Barnstable Harbor. Cape Cod has a rich history from the 1600's and local museums are plentiful. The Cape Cod Melody Tent - just 10 minutes away - is a major entertainment venue.
