This unique home, known as 'Granny's COTTAGE' , has been updated and modernized, retains WARMTH AND CHARM, and is ideal for someone seeking a short-term rental (1-6 months), or for a family coming to see the WASHINGTON, DC sites!
On an acre of lawn and gardens, the brick cottage has 2 cozy upstairs bedrooms and wide wood plank flooring. Downstairs is a modern kitchen, living room with flat screen TV, dining room, small den with pullout sofa, and bathroom. A favorite feature is Granny's screened in porch where one can enjoy breakfast while watching Virginia's beautiful birds.
The home is 4.5 miles north of Historic Mount Vernon, and 4.5 miles south of Old Town, Alexandria. Within walking distance of parks for hiking and biking; minutes from the Potomac River and the American Horticulture Society (George Washington's River Farm). There is easy access to Washington, DC: 11 miles ride by car or bike, or an easy commute by bus and/or metro. The expansive yard has plenty of room for outdoor games and cookouts.
My husband, three children and I moved next door to this property in 1984. The wonderful neighbor, who came to be known as 'Granny', maintained a lovely home, and we were fortunate to purchase it in 1999. We live next door to the property, and are available to renters for guidance. In the past several years, local families have rented the cottage while renovating their home, and international students have occupied it while in DC for a semester of study. When not working in the gardens, I work as a nurse, and my husband has his own business. Our Portuguese Water Dog keep us busy now that the kids are grown.
The Owner purchased this cottage in 1999
More than we expected. The owners were gracious hosts! Ideal spot to come home to after a long day sightseeing. Lovely Gardens to relax in. Grocery stores were close by and convenient. Downtown Alexandria has wonderful shops and restaurants. Convenient location to get into DC by car or Metro. Mount Vernon is just a few miles up the road easy and convenient to get to and a worthwhile stop on your trip. We traveled all the way from California and would gladly make the trip back just to stay at the cottage again.
We adored the Cottage & the yard was so beautiful. The weather was so lovely. The Cottage is furnished very comfortably. The kitchen is user friendly. We had our meals outside on the patio. The location is only 10 miles from DC & very near Alexandria. We would recommend this place for a couple, 2 couples, or a family of 4. Enjoy!!

This cottage is located on a beautiful property with well-manicured grounds; upon arrival we were also impressed with the cleanliness of the interior. The owners were very friendly and organized. They had set up the requested sleeping arrangements ahead of time and everything was exactly where they said it would be. We enjoyed a very relaxing long weekend; our favorite parts were the screened porch, outdoor seating and proximity to wonderful running paths and sites such as River Farm Park.
Who Knew? Who Knew? It is the question my wife and friends asked ourselves more than once. We had rented "Granny's cottage expecting a small older home that we would be slightly better than a hotel and just enough room for for a party of five.
This home was a treasurer sitting with its hammock, fire pit and swing tucked away on a beautiful property that is almost as well cared for as the house itself. A fully stocked kitchen with some spices already in hand made evening dinners easy. Each room in this house is comfortable and thought out. Our stay added to an exceptional vacation with Rolling Thunder in Washington DC. The owner ,Lisa Coakley was gracious and even offered the home for an additional day as we were expecting bad weather on the day we departed. And the family pet, a dog named bird, is a welcome visitor with a sweet disposition.
Lisa, Thank you for extending your rental to us. We enjoyed ever piece/peace of this and should we return to the area you will be the first person I contact.

Came to DC area for wedding and a little sightseeing. We arrived late in the evening during a down pour of rain and was greeted by the housekeeper with a very big, much needed umbrella. Thank You so much for the help! The cottage is charming and well furnished in all rooms (coffee, spices, bath soap etc.) Had the most comfortable bed we have ever slept in with a rental. Coffee on the porch reminded us of home. Would recommend cutting the bushes in front of porch to see the pretty landscaping better. The gardens and birds are pleasant to look at. Even with my very bad knees, was able to handle the stairs for the middle of the night run to the down stairs bathroom. A low light fixture at least at the bottom of the stairs would be helpful. We left a light on for my safety. We did enjoy the short visits with Jim and Lisa who where busy with their own weddings to attend. As they told us, Mt. Vernon is a must to see if you like history. Highly recommend this cozy, charming cottage for small groups. Metro Rail is surely the way into DC and very close to this cottage.
This property inside and out was beautiful. We had plenty of room for our family of four (three adults and one 16-year-old). Beds were super comfortable, kitchen had everything we needed. Screened in porch was perfect for drinking coffee in the morning. Beautiful backyard to relax in after a long day of sightseeing. Jim and Lisa were super friendly and helpful, the perfects hosts. Short, easy drive to Washington DC. I highly recommend Granny's Cottage!
