Accessability: As with many idyllic locations, the house is off of the main road a bit. Being literally right on Lake Oscawana, there is a hill behind the house that provides access from the parking area to the house itself. There is a path that is about 100 feet long that takes visitors down the hill, with newly constructed stone steps, and pathway lighting for evenings. It is why we classify our home as not suitable for elderly or disabled individuals.
My husband and I rented the cottage for a September getaway. We found the listing on a site for people who like to travel with their dogs. When we arranged the rental with Artie we had one dog. Unexpectedly the week before our arrival we had a second, a three month puppy in need of a home. When I explained the situation, Artie was very welcoming and we had a wonderful time at the cottage with both dogs.
The cottage is beautiful, overlooking the lake, very clean and thoughtfully appointed with everything we could need for our visit: there are two single kayaks and a double kayak, life jackets, a kitchen filled with pans and cooking utensils, a microwave, television and much more. The cottage's large porch was our favorite spot and there are additional comfortable places to sit and relax outside under the trees or on the private dock. We had two days warm enough for swimming and the water was clear and very refreshing. As noted, the property is very hilly but we got used to the path up and down which is very well maintained and lit at night. We hope to come back next summer and explore the nearby hiking and farmer's market. For this first visit we were content to relax by the water.
Not even a downpour could dampen my enthusiasm for this lovely lake home. Comfortable, cozy, clean. Owner very kind and helpful. Easy access to local farmers' markets and surrounding towns. Porch and dock afford ample outdoor living space.
We have rented on Lake Oscawana for the past 3 summers. This summer we decided to change to another house that had more privacy and it's own private dock. We rented this house for 6 weeks, and spent the entire time up there (we live in NYC). July 15th through Labor Day.
The house is on an incredible lot, on the good side of the lake overlooking the sunset each night. We were greeted by Artie when we arrived and explained everything we needed to know about the house. The house was very clean and simply decorated. Everything was included (linens, towels, fully stocked kitchen). It was just the two of us, and our French Bulldog, so there was plenty of room. We loved that they are dog friendly!
We spent a lot of time on the porch, most meals, and most mornings before the sun was out on the dock. Even into the evening I would sit out there (bugs not a problem for me, they provided many citronella candles and bug spray). There is a TV with cable, stereo, but we actually didn't even turn it on during the entire time we were there! The beds were very comfortable, and it was very convenient to have a washer/dryer just below the house. We had some friends come up a few weekends, and it was great house for entertaining!
The dock and beach are simply incredible. One of the best on the lake. We also enjoyed the large, flat lawn to play fetch with our dog, and the firepit for night smores. This side of the lake is perfect for diving off the dock and deep water swimming. We purchased a paddle board which we enjoyed, as well as the provided kayaks.
I would highly recommend this house to rent! We will definitely be returning!
Places in the area to see:
Vera's Marketplace, Cold Spring
Amazing small market with great produce, meats, garden items, and homemade donuts
The Pantry, Cold Spring
Next door to Vera's… this is a great coffee shop where you can also buy artisanal beers from all over. We purchased a growler of cold brew coffee we would refill each week.
Cold Spring Farmer's Market
Every Saturday. Don't miss!
Cold Spring Apothecary
On Main Street in Cold Spring. They have wonderful bath oils and skin products. Recently expanded to include spa services.
We spend 4 wonderful days in this pristine house on a lovely lake. The house is so clean, spacious and comfortable and the owner was so informative. The nature was so serene that we did not leave once.....
We can't say enough about this beautiful home on this pristine lake! It was definitely a hidden gem, tucked away on a peaceful lake, on a quiet road. The property itself was so well taken care of that we immediately felt at home. Not to mention, the owner met us at the home when we arrived to take us through all of the home's amenities so we weren't left with any additional questions or left spending time trying to locate anything we needed for the weekend. He also took time to explain to us where the closest stores (grocery store, etc) were, just in case we need anything during our stay. Though we only stayed for a weekend, it was one of the best rental experiences we've ever had and we'll definitely be back!
The house is immaculate and fully stocked, didn't need to bring anything but food and drinks. It's so beautiful, all white inside and out. Lovely. A short walk down a few steps to this gorgeous lake where the sunsets are magnificent. Absolutely peaceful and serene, just what I needed. My kids loved it when they came to visit, a little oasis so close to the city. Wish I could have stayed longer. It is some hike from the car down to the house down beautiful steps, the younger people had no problem, I'm almost 70 so it was slow going but doable. The water is so clean. The owner is very helpful and lives nearby. I couldn't have asked for anything better, it was just what I needed for a respite from the maddening crowds. Highly recommend, you won't be disappointed.
