This spacious beach house, known as 'W2', has been in the same family since it was built in the early 1930s. Its 4th generation owners have preserved the traditional character of the house while keeping the amenities contemporary.
The large front porch, with dining table and views up and down the beach, features modern casement windows that allow for solar-heated mornings and ocean breeze evenings. The open-concept living and dining areas are large and comfortable. The upstairs features one full bath (stand up shower) and one half bath. There is another half bath on the first floor and a second stand up shower on the back 'bath house' porch.
The outdoor shower and hose are perfect for a quick rinse after a fishing trip or a jump in the ocean! The cottage sits in the center of Hawks Nest Beach, a family resort with tennis courts a gift/convenience store, recreational activities for the kids and movies on the beach for the families. The town of Old Lyme has a shopping center, a variety of restaurants, art galleries, museums and scenic roads and trails for running or cycling. Most appealing are the miles of shoreline at the front door for those who enjoy hiking or searching for sea shells and sea glass.

The sandy beachfront is right off the front porch. The cottage is located in the heart of Hawks Nest Beach where there are plenty of activities for the kids as well as privacy for your own family. The large enclosed front porch offers beautiful sun rises over the water while having your morning coffee and a gorgeous setting for candlelight dinners. One can walk or jog for miles along the shore while collecting sea glass and shells. If fishing or crabbing is your passion, there is plenty of that as well. The house is nicely furnished and full of beach character. The atmosphere at Hawks Nest Beach is welcoming and friendly and the neighboring area has beautiful sights and museums to visit.
I rented this home for a week with my sister-in-law. We stayed here with our six boys below the age of 8 and my mother. We all LOVED our week in Hawks Nest and wished we could have stayed there for the whole month. This house is the perfect summer cottage - right on the water, easy to keep clean and live in with both older people and a lot of little kids, the great picnic table dining area overlooking the water provided a space for relaxing meals and fun board game competitions, the beds were very comfortable and the sound of the waves outside the windows was divine. The house had all the utensils we needed for making delicious summer meals.
The Hawks Nest community is friendly, welcoming and fun. We met many other families who were also there for the week and everyone had a great time playing together, sharing stories and exploring the beach. The little country store across the street from this home provides daily activities for kids organized by a local college student. The college student who organized the activities the week we were there was GREAT with our kids. She took the kids crabbing and then organized crab races on the beach, organized a morning of making tie-dye t-shirts, taught the kids how to make bubble wands out of pipe cleaners, set up shell painting and arranged for a scientist from Mystic to come teach the kids about ocean life. The scientist brought about 10 different marine animals with him which the kids got to touch. There is also a beach movie night on Thursdays. None of the activities needed to be signed up for in advance so everything was very relaxing. We could just show up when/if we wanted to join the activities and all of the activities were free, so it was like having a summer camp without the hassle of planning and paying huge fees. At the end of the week, the college student organized a talent show for the kids. This was a HUGE highlight for the kids and comical for the parents to watch.
The street is a dead end street. Our kids rode their bikes all around the neighborhood without having to worry about cars.
The beach is rocky so some people might prefer to have water shoes for swimming or wading out into the water. We played in our bare feet and our kids did not use water shoes but I noticed a lot of other people wore water shoes.
Thank you for a wonderful week in Old Lyme!
Our extended family rented this house again and truly had a fantastic time! The house fits all of us perfectly and the proximity to the beach is perfect! We even brought our jet skis this time and all the people at Hawk's Nest Beach were so helpful getting them into the water. We are really hoping to vacation here again in 2015.
This is our third year staying at the same cottage, and as always had a wonderful time. So much to do for the kids. Many activities. Planning on the same for next year. Nothing better than listening to the waves at night. Everyone is so friendly, we vacation at the same time every year as our kids have met and hang out with the same kids that do the same. Can't wait til next year. Highly recommend to others.
After numerous attempts to return our security deposit for this house, I have no response from the owner and as a last resort am reporting this to any future renters of this Hawk's Nest Beach house WE2.
Entire family gathered from around the world for a week on the beach. Cottage was comfortable for all 8 adults and 3 kids. Beach time was fabulous. Accomodations were just right, not too fancy, not too rustic. Recommend this spot for any family gathering. Owners are very helpful and accomodating.
Our family enjoyed a super vacation at this beach house! Mom, Dad, Kids, Grandma and Auntie had the time of our life. The house was beautifully decorated and the beach was peaceful. Our boys found endless things to do and met so many new friends at Hawks Nest Beach! The house is everything you would expect and more of an oceanfront beach house! The bedrooms were a great size so everyone had their own space. The house was clean and well equipped and we quickly felt like we were at home. We were very sad to leave. We will be back next year!
