About Duncan McPhee

Originally from Michigan.

Santa Barbara & Laguna Beach, Calif. for schools, then 7 colleges. MFA in Photography

Since 1970, I lived in upcountry Maui with horses for 32 years,

1971 to 1979 had a retail clothing shop in Makawao often riding horseback to work.

1979 to 2004 serving clients as an active Maui Realtor.

2002-2007 I spent 6-8 months at a time traveling in underdeveloped Asian & African countries.

Since 2008 my time is mostly Whistler B.C. Canada, Maui, Hi., Whidbey Island, Wa., & LaQuinta, Ca .

I’m an active, nomadic, spontaneous flexible, outdoors kinda gal. Under developed countries spark my interest as they change so fast, visiting for extended time engaging with local folks in their community & country, hiking & horse trips, reading books, investigating culture, history & politics of the country I'm traveling.

My enjoyments in no particular order: Hiking in the Himalayas, Kayaking, biking, camping, sailing, cooking, outdoor lifestyle, long Horseback camp trips, yummy wine, dancing, supporting local business, organic gardening, listening to NPR, CNBC attending interesting film, theatre, dance, art, music. Oh, and paperwork:

I love my family & friends. I’m social, love language, delight meeting, engaging with strangers, especially young travelers. Spas & massage, film documentaries, biographies, beautifully written books no matter the subject.

I delight in: amusing my self, telling the truth, travel by public transport, river/horseback and cheese. I rarely hurry yet can get ready to go in a heartbeat, love doing anything I’ve never done before. I have a penchant for funny one liners.

Duncan McPhee purchased this house in 2010

Why Duncan McPhee chose Whidbey Island

I love the beach and neighborhood, a great place to walk shady tree lined streets away from busy traffic. It is private, friendly and so close to anything you might want or enjoy. No franchises in South Whidbey so you can shop supporting small businesses. Wine tasting, wonderful farmers markets, studio art tours, great unique music at local coffee houses.

What makes this house unique

Viewing nature on a pristine beach, enjoy organic garden veggies, dig shellfish from the besach. I love to kayak, paddle board, crab, swim, boat and bicycle from my front door Free public buses into Freeland on weekdays. A huge variety of quiet forested walking trails and an even bigger selection of beaches to walk along. The ferry ride is a 12 minute ride from Mukilteo to Clinton, no reservations departs on 1/2 hour. Go upstairs in the ferry to enjoy the 360 degree views of the islands and Cascade Mountain range on the trip.

Just what we hoped for! Seashell House

  • 4 of 5

House is steps from its own shoreline. Low tide walks for shells, seals in the bay, lots of birds, even an eagle! Great sunsets. Upstairs bedroom has incredible view of bay, as does the living area on the main floor. Kids and parents had a relaxed and fun time here. Recommend to anyone seeking a quiet island getaway! Wish we could have stayed twice as long at least. Owner provided a good value well described. Want to come back here.

Great Whidbey spring getaway!

  • 5 of 5

We booked this as a very last-minute getaway without any of the usual due diligence and research that I do when booking VRBO properties. Boy, did we luck out! This is a great little house centrally located on Whidbey--easy drive to both ferries, Langley, and up to Deception Pass. We loved the private access to the beach and the house is beautifully set up for babies/toddlers, with a high chair, Pack 'n' Play, toys, a monitor, and lots of children's dishes. The one note I'd offer to prospective renters is that the two bedrooms are very different in size--the upstairs is huge and light-filled, while the downstairs room is small and a bit hard to maneuver in with the twin-sized bed that's been added to the queen. This worked out fine for our group (a family with young children and a couple) but might not be as ideal for two couples or two small families looking to share the space. The only other small issue was that although there were knives galore in the kitchen, none were sharp enough to cut things like bread (not an uncommon challenge in rental homes, but frustrating nonetheless). If you're local, I'd suggest bringing along a few of your own. The kitchen is otherwise well equipped and a pleasure to cook in. All in all, a great experience, and although we booked the property just two days beforehand, everything was processed promptly with no problems at all.

A really cute place.

We had a very nice time at the Sea Shell house. The beds are so comfortable and it was nice to come "home" to such a cozy place. Thank you very much.

Beautiful and peaceful island getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My two adult sons and I spent five days over Christmas here at this property. The owners are very kind and were very helpful--including very precise and easy directions to the house from Seattle on the ferry and once we drove onto the Whidbey.

The house is cozy with wonderful picture windows looking out on Puget Sound. Since it is December, we knew it would be cold and probably rainy...but there were opportunities to stroll the shell laden beach between raindrops. So quiet and lovely.

The house is equipped with everything one would need in the kitchen. There is also a Blue Ray/DVD player which we loved having.

It's a quick 15 minute ferry ride into Seattle, and we spent a few days exploring the "big city."

If you want to really feel like you are "getting away"--this is such a perfect choice. I will definitely be returning--maybe this summer!

A special thank you to Duncan and Kathy for your hospitality.

Peaceful and Serene

  • 4 of 5

My wife and 2 year old son and I stayed for a week and loved it. It was so peaceful. The tides coming and going and back country roads with the windows were wonderful. They set up all the gates for our little guy and it made it really easy and he loved playing with all the trucks and pre-stocked toys. Big bonus for parents. We only ate out one night and cooked there most nights and they had everything needed down to a blender for the homemade salmon chowder we made. My only suggestion would be a humidifier. We ended buying one as the heat really can dry out the space. Freeland is a quick drive away. We felt secluded but close enough to Freeland and there's a great back road to Langley. The shopping centers have all that you need and there's a good playground down in Freeland. See you again soon.

We enjoyed our stay at this great house on the water! The neighborhood is beautifully wooded, the garden full of herbs and vegetables and the bay very quiet and serene. The view from the living room window and the master bedroom was amazing!
