Stay at one of the original summer estates on Indian Lake. This beautiful log cottage with lovely secondary white cottage, stand amidst towering pines, overlooking one of the prettiest views on the Rideau Canal system.
The lake frontage of 275 feet offers excellent swimming, sunbathing, diving right off the large dock, a sunny Western exposure and a stunning sunset view. This pair of cottages together makes this the perfect spot for large families, up to 12, or for two families holidaying together.
We rent the pair of cottages together, by the week, from Saturday to Saturday. The dock, boathouse, telephone, washer and dryer are common to the two cottages.
Indian Lake forms part of the Rideau Canal route (Kingston to Ottawa) and joins Chaffey's Lock with Clear Lake. The Rideau Canal is recognized as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and was rated #2 as an exceptional historic site destination by National Geographic.
This property is extremely private. The single lane roadway running behind the property comes to a dead end after a few more cottages. Woods and trails lie on the other side of the road. Trees on this two acre property offer excellent privacy including from the dock. Rock Island, which can be seen in one of the pictures, is uninhabited and can be reached by canoe for picnics swimming or exploring. As we are joint owners of this lovely island there is no problem for guests enjoying it.
The cottages are comfortable and efficient without sacrificing their charm. Every room has electric heaters for cool times and the bedrooms have quiet, overhead fans for air circulation. Wood floors, Persian carpets, leather furniture and antiques provide a unique flavour to the décor. Comfortable beds with fine cotton linens and quality towels help keep families well rested and happy.
The main log cottage has a 30 foot screened veranda across the south side and a 25 foot screened veranda along the west side overlooking the lake, a large log interior living / dining room with stone fireplace, expandable dining table, a full bathroom, three bedrooms, two with queen size bed, and one with a pair of double beds, all on the main floor. There is a fourth bedroom upstairs with a queen size bed and attached half bath. The newly renovated main kitchen has a new dishwasher, stove, refrigerator, microwave, utensils and table. Included are a large toaster, a blender, and a coffee maker.
The smaller white cottage has a 24 foot screened veranda looking west out over the lake plus a spacious living room with stone fireplace, bathroom with shower, and two bedrooms, one with queen size bed and the other with a double bed. The kitchen is well equipped with stove, refrigerator and cooking utensils.
Both cottages have easy access to the boat house, dock and lake. A stone outdoor wood fireplace with grill is close to both cottages with a picnic table for outdoor eating. A propane BBQ is also provided. The clothes washer and dryer are placed conveniently for access from both cottages. This handsome pair of cottages allows for comfortable accommodation for 12 in the six bedrooms. Our septic system is rated for a maximum occupation of 12, which limits the size of families.
The TV is a LCD wide screen hooked up to satellite and the DVD/CD player is an XBox 360 with a collection of games and movies. There is a wireless high speed internet connection for those who wish to bring a laptop and stay connected. The water in all taps is purified with an Ultra Violet (UV) system and the water has been tested pure for drinking by the county test facility. Two hot water tanks provide plenty of hot water. For swimming, there are large swimming towels in the cupboard. Please bring your own personal swimming gear such as flippers, masks and beach shoes.
The boathouse takes a 19 foot boat with up to a 8.5 foot beam. A pair of mooring whips on the dock provides mooring for a second boat. Canoe, paddles and life jackets (4 adult) are provided.
You will have access to five connecting lakes on the same level and the rest of the Rideau Lakes are accessible through the Locks. The area is known for its beauty, deep, clean water and excellent fishing, offering largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, pike and splake fishing in season. Loons, blue herons, osprey, wild turkey, rare songbirds and deer can be observed in their natural habitat.
Indian Lake is on the Rideau Canal system, near Chaffey's Lock. Groceries, bank (with ATM), drugstore, and post office are ten minutes away in the town of Elgin; pubs and shopping can be found in Newboro and Westport, about 20 minutes away. The nearest city is a 45 minute drive to Kingston, and Canada’s capital, Ottawa, is a 90 minute drive.
Your family will enjoy excellent swimming and water sports, colorful sunsets, and clear starlight nights. A holiday to remember.
My wife and I stayed two weeks, and had revolving visits of adult family members throughout. The two cottages were ideal for the combination of privacy and togetherness. The porch and the dock were great centres for socializing and soaking up the views, and the big dining room table was ideal for long dinners. The lakeshore and the lock system invite canoeing. We were blessed with good weather, but even had it rained, that porch and the fireplace would have been pleasant venues. Grocery shopping is close by, and the landlord's family is just up the road for any questions. I would highly recommend it for anyone contemplating a gathering of the clan.
What a great Vacation spot,we spent a week there this year and was fantastic. The cabins were well equipped wit everything needed. We have spent many weeks in Canada in the past 20 years, and this may have been the best. The name Sunset Lodge is very fitting and we spent every evening down on the dock at sunset.I have booked for next year already ,and will now make this our yearly retreat.
We spent a great week in mid-August, 12 of us in total, kids, teenagers, middle aged and seniors! The cottages were comfortable for all with lots of living space inside and out. Convenient to have washer/dryer and dishwasher! Large dock where we spent most afternoons swimming, relaxing and watching the boats go by. Beautiful sunsets! We have rented many cottages in various areas of Ontario over the last 10 years and this is one the best.
Chaffey's Lock was completed in 1832 as part of the military route from Kingston to Montreal via Ottawa. It is an historic waterway. Jones Falls, half an hour drive, has four locks and a stone dam that was an engineering feat in its day. Well worth a visit.
