I sailed into Hanalei on a Full Moon night in 1976. It was the most beautiful place I had ever seen by moonlight & when I awakened the next morning to see the long stretch of white sand, the crescent shaped Bay, the Emerald Green Mountains I knew I had found the place I wanted to live for the rest of my life. I spent the next 4 summers there before I left my dear friends & home in Pt. Dume, Malibu in 1980. I was sad to leave my Yoga Students, family, & friends, but now I have my Kauai Yoga Students, family, friends. Kauai welcomed me with it's warm Aloha & a wonderfully rewarding job. I started teaching Tai Chi, Yoga, & Massage at Kauai Community College so that I was able to do what I love & feel able to serve the community, meeting people from all over the island from all walks of life.
I love Hanalei Sunsets so I walk, run, swim, surf, or Boogie Board every evening at Sunset. It is a 1 minute walk to Hanalei Bay & Beach, my favorite beach in the world. I have always loved being in the Ocean, but California was too cold for me so I spent time in other Tropical Paradises that were great for a vacation, but not places I could call home. This is home and I would love to share it with you.

I love the Beach & being in the warm ocean and I don't love driving. I can walk to the beach in 1 minute or to Hanalei Village in 10 minutes. Everything I need or want is in Hanalei.
This is a place to relax & enjoy the healthy Hanalei lifestyle. There is a Hanalei Farmer's Market twice a week where you can get great local produce. There are Fruit, Juice, & smoothie Bars, Harvest Health Food Store, all within a 10 minute walk from your Vacation Rental. Devaki is available for Hawaiian LomiLomi, Deep Tissue, & other forms of Massage. Devaki also teaches Massage if you want to learn. Devaki teaches Yoga & Yoga Teacher Training & was a student of Indra Devi, the First Lady of Yoga.
I'm happy it felt like you were "living here". That is the idea. I try to give you all the comforts of home but the freedom of a vacation. Many of my guests return every year & call it their "Home Away from Home". I hope you will come back.
Listing was as described save for two items: nowhere does it say that this is a downstairs suite in the owner's house. Also, the listing says "newly renovated" but I don't believe it to be so. The unit was adequately clean.
As a studio suite the unit was sizable and had a lovely view to the west. The owner was accommodating but gave us our privacy, which was great. I would rate this accommodation on the high side of 'middle-of-the-road'. Some of the things we found to be minor deficiencies could easily be a deal-breaker for other vacationers, but we enjoyed our stay overall.

- Great communication from owner before and during stay
- Superb location a stone's throw from the beach, shops, and restaurants
- Quiet unit with no noise from owner (upstairs) or outside. Very peaceful.
- Very good supply of various things we might need to enhance our stay - ie. beach chairs, umbrella, local restaurant info, towels, etc.
- Strange smell permeates entire unit. Mothballs maybe?
- Yard foliage is overgrown to the point that the cement path is completely covered halfway to the door, and the yard feels shadowy and closed-in.
- Lawn furniture has also been swallowed by the plants. It's obvious that attention has not been paid to the garden.
- Notes taped EVERYWHERE to explain all the broken and/or quirky things. Just fix it or renovate as needed so that there are no quirks!
Although it is nice now, I feel like this was a much nicer unit ten or fifteen years ago. Since then it seems like it has been cleaned but not updated. The fridge has a water dispenser that doesn't work; the washing machine only works on the permanent press setting; and the yard was very overgrown, for example. One other other notable deficiency was the cheap foam furniture in the living area. It was so obvious that the owner took great care in decorating the unit and making it look pleasantly Hawaiian (and does a great job of it!) that sitting down on furniture that seemed like it was meant either for a patio or a kid's room ruined the mood that was so carefully crafted. We sat on the very comfortable bed or kitchen chairs instead.
We were satisfied with our stay. The owner obviously wanted us to be happy but was also unobtrusive. With light renos this unit could easily jump into the 'superb' category. The location alone makes it worth it and we had a great time.
This is a great place for two - close to the beach, clean, everything you need to have a great stay in Hanalei. Plus - it's very quiet and secluded. Even has a beautiful view from the bed! Only things that weren't great were the grill didn't have any propane so we couldn't grill our fresh fish and the outdoor shower could use some cleaning/maintenance. But neither of these detracted from our fabulous 10 days with Devaki (who was a very gracious hostess and immediately accessible if you needed anything). We highly recommend this place and will be returning ourselves! Mahalo...

My husband and I visited Kauai to celebrate our anniversary. We wanted to stay someplace that would be an easy walk to town and the beach. This could not be in a better location to meet that criteria! Additional benefits included it being off the road (very private and quiet), had plenty of space, and a very sweet and helpful (but not at all invasive) hostess in Devaki. I would recommend this for you if you are, like us, looking for a good location, a place where you can easily make your own meals (or walk to town for meals!) and aren't looking for anything fancy. It was clean and had plenty of amenities, but it is a laid-back spot to enjoy Hanalei.

Quiet studio near the beach and near the center of town. Lots of room for a studio, full kitchen. Enjoyed walking to town for coffee and dinner. Definitely hoping to come back soon.
