Overview

The Bay Area House Rental Photos and Description

House, 5 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 5.5 Baths, (Sleeps 11)

You will be amazed at how this conveniently located property feels so peaceful and remote. You can enjoy it with your family, as a romantic hideaway or well earned retreat. It is only 20 minutes from San Francisco, 1 mile from downtown Mill Valley, 30 minutes to the Beach or Muir Woods. An excursion to the wine country is just 45 minutes away.

The home offers 3 lovely guest rooms that are included in the basic rental rate. The master has wonderful views of Mount Tam, a private fireplace and Jacuzzi tub. The two other guest rooms also have great views and their own full bathrooms with bath tubs. All the rooms are spacious, bright and warm. The 3 guest rooms are all on the top floor with all day sun and maximum views, and are the primary rentals.

For larger groups additional 4th and 5th* equally lovely bedrooms and a guest cottage can be made available for an extra charge. The extra rooms are on the entry level with a separate entrance possibility. The guest cottage is bright and sunny and detached but shares the bathroom with the 5th bedroom. (see rates below)

*The 5th bedroom can be closed off from the main home with an accordion door and the owner occasionally keeps it for private use when the home is not fully rented and she is in residence. She makes it available for large groups upon request and when she is not in residence. The owner does not have access to the public areas of the primary residence during rentals.

You will want to cook up a storm in the gorgeous kitchen. Counters are granite, cabinets maple and the views, spectacular. The kitchen is open, airy and enjoys all day sun. There is a formal dining room with a gorgeous custom chenille mahogany wood table, living room with sunken fireplace, and cozy family room with a wood burning stove.

The home is spacious with high ceilings, views in every direction hardwood floors and plush carpets in the family room and bedrooms. It is casually elegant with the outside incorporated within. Pictures simply cannot capture the lovely and peaceful ambiance experienced immediately when you enter the front door.

This sun-drenched home offers world class hiking and mountain biking right from the front porch. There are so many day trips and outside adventures available, but you will have a hard time leaving the sun and tranquility of the many decks and pool. Many a day I have gazed at the fog far off in the distance horizon reminding me that my sun drenched home is a magical enclave of warm sunny skies.

In keeping with the gorgeous setting, the home itself is 'green'. The cleaning products are all natural with no artificial fragrances, the soaps are scented with all natural organic lavender essential oil and detergents are fragrance free. The pool is solar heated and cleaned with a silver mineral system instead of chlorine.

Treat your self, your family, your friends; come share my peace of heaven on earth.

"We are back from our wonderful holiday, which unforgettably began at your home in Mill Valley. Because of the specialness of our gathering there, and the wonderful setting, I know I won’t forget our time at your beautiful home. Thank you so much for letting our family use your beautiful house. Your home was the perfect setting for a special time together for remembering my mother and celebrating her life. Thank you again, and best wishes.

What a lovely time

  • 5 of 5

I'm just returning home from a restful two days at Susan's house. What a gem-- nestled in the trees, you feel so far from the city and yet you are only a half hour away. Our group really loved her home-- so many wonderful nooks to get away and relax. We lounged on the decks (which are not unsafe at all), soaked in the pool, hung out on the couches, napped in the bedrooms, and gathered for wonderful meals on the deck outside the kitchen. Susan was fantastic-- she was very responsive and extremely helpful in making our weekend as restful and special as she could. It is truly a home away from home!

AMAZING!!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family is very grateful to Susan!!!! She truly went above and beyond in working it out so we could stay in her lovely home with less that 12 hour notice. We had to move from the place we had actually signed up to stay at because it had wet carpet, mildew smell in the basement and was not cleaned in a manner we felt comfortable with. That is hole other story....

Susan's home provided us with a clean, well kept place that accommodated our family of 8 adults very nicely. The huge dining area is fantastic for playing games and our lazy morning breakfast. The kitchen was well stocked with cook items and basics. Lots of dishes for a big group like ours. Each night it was wonderful to get into her beds as the sheets felt clean and fresh. Yes, there is an RV out front, but it didn't interfere with our parking. Remember, you are staying in someone's home...

We enjoyed waking up to the quite peaceful setting in the woods. Downtown was close enough that our family took an afternoon walk there and back before going to the wedding we had come to Mill Valley. VRBO owes Susan a lot for her wiliness to open her lovely home to us so that we could get back to relaxing and enjoying the wedding activities. You will love working with her! Susan was easy to get ahold of and worked with us in a very polite and professional manager. It was our experience that Susan goes way out of her way to make your stay all that you want it to be!!! We highly recommend staying here.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind review. Your situation was the classic "making lemonade out of lemons"--my most gratifying yet. I got a distress call on your behalf from VRBO as I was boarding a plane. I texted housekeepers to come clean during the plane Captain's message. By the time I landed, you were happily ensconced in the clean home. I am sorry the place you initially rented was so horrible, but happy VRBO found me for you. You were a pleasure to host and work with, and I hope for the pleasure again under less dramatic circumstances.

Disappointed in property.

  • 3 of 5

(1) Though the owner did mention the scaffolding, might remain..due to recent damage caused by a fallen tree, she failed to mention the huge truck/camper(?) blocking the drive way nor that the garage was filled with construction junk She had assured me we could park 2 cars in the garage and 2 in the driveway. Further, the one space outside the driveway was blocked by a car during our visit.

(2)The directions for the heat/AC were such that we would have had to re-program the system...which we did not do. And, therefore the system was OFF during our visit. The temperature was quite hot during the day...and

cold at night.

(3) The directions for heating the spa were confusing at best. We were unable to get the heater to work. So, we were not able to us the spa. (My son-in-law is an engineer who is an expert at such programming, but gave up).

(4) The condition of the decks was very worrisome. Not only were splinters a hazard overall...the decks had apparently not been stained/painted in some time, and the boards gave when walked upon....they were NOT structurally sound.

(5)The wood on the lower 2 decks were in the same condition and were unswept, dark and overgrown with a disgustingly filthy upholstered sofa (NOTHING LIKE VRBO photos).

(6) Further, one bed was jammed into the laundry room.!

Because of the above conditions, 4 members of our family did not stay even one night in the house. AND we had to cancel a dinner we had planned for our family because the deck was unsafe.

We did everything requested, including "no shoes", and clean-up. Further we started a load of sheets...did not use beach towels...and recycled, etc.

The main level, living areas were lovely and the views spectacular. We hope the property will be restored to resemble the photos.

Owner's Response: This review is disappointing. I end almost every email with "Please feel free to email, call or text with any questions whatsoever that arise during your stay". A simple call or text could've solved many of her issues in minutes, and my cell is never more than inches away during rentals.1)She complained there were no directions for the A/C or heat. The home does not come with A/C, few Mill Valley homes do since we only have a handful of days when we need it.There are no directions on the heat panel because it is the most basic type. All she had to do was push an up arrow to desired temp, then push the hold button.2)She complained the spa instructions were too complicated so they were unable to use it. There are literally only 3 steps(buttons) to push, with directions consisting of 8 words on the panel--couldn't be more simple.3)She complained she could not park 2 cars in my garage because it was filled with construction stuff. She could not park there because I NEVER, EVER let people park in there. It is my private space for storage. I had assured her there was plenty of room for her 4 cars in the driveway, and there was.4) I agree the decks needed love, but they were safe and without the supposed splinters (redwood doesn't splinter). The deck stain was actually there where they could see it, waiting to be used when they left. I warned her the home, decks and garden didn't look as it should, as all energy went to making it usable in time for her rental. 5) She complained about a bed jammed in the laundry room. That is a futon available only upon request for overflow. (The laundry room used to be a bedrm so has a closet). I did not offer that room to her. 6)She complained about the "huge camper blocking the driveway." I park my small 19' camper in a corner of my driveway, leaving room for many cars. I don't feel it necessary to mention the camper parked in my driveway as it is irrelevant to a rental. 7)That her "family members chose not to stay in the home "because of the above conditions" makes no sense. Her family actually fully used the home, all beds, bathrooms & towels were used, incl the laundry room futon, which they made up from sheets taken from the linen closet, and without my permission(I charge extra) 8) It's a mystery why she "had to cancel her dinner because of the decks" which only needed refinishing.--irrelevant. There was a huge dining room and full kitchen for her use. I try so hard to be a great host, this was avoidable and sad.

Quintessential Mill Valley

  • 5 of 5

Our family of three generations - 10 in all - had a wonderful time at Susan's home. This lovely home is surrounded by beautiful redwoods that make it reminiscent of a luxury tree house. We spent the time hiking the Muir trail and Mount Tamilpias and felt like we never left the nature trail. Since it was December we didn't have a chance to experience the pool area but enjoyed just having it in the foreground of our view.

Many thanks to Susan for a great family getaway. She even had toys that she welcomed the little granddaughters to play with.

A Happy Family!

  • 5 of 5

Many thanks to Susan for allowing us to share her home. We came from the four corners of the US to be all together after two years. It was a perfect location for all the sightseeing we planned from going North to the Jelly Belly Factory and a tour at the Benziger Family winery(highly recommended) to Muir Woods and then to many of the sights in and around SF. We realized that we flew, bicycled, walked, drove by car and tour bus over the Golden Gate and boated under it. It was a busy time of year, so driving, parking and even using public trans in the city was challenging. So we were very happy to come "home" to Mill Valley in the forest at the end of the day. The pool was especially welcoming to our teen grandchildren who had a "blast" being together. Three of our group even hiked up to the ridge on two mornings and were greeted by beautiful views. The first floor was so roomy for all of us to have a meal together and an evening of games. The kitchen was well equipped for our needs(we even baked an EVERYBODY birthday cake since we don't see each other for those special days). The bedrooms were comfortable and very clean. Again, thank you for the hospitality.

Peaceful and Relaxing

  • 5 of 5

What wonderful place! The home is everything it was said to be and more. There is definitely great ju ju! My ex-husband and I decided to plan our 1st vacation together with our 4 children and both of our spouses and our older boys girlfriends. Our second son is off to join the Navy, so we wanted to all be able to put our differences aside and come together as one big family. What a wonderful time! The home was very spacious with 3 levels, a great dining room where we had an amazing dinner with everyone gathered around. The weather was perfect and allowed us to utilize the solar heated pool after a long day in the city and a strenuous hike in the Muir Woods. It is nestled in the woods and is so very private and peaceful. The layout and size of the home was accommodating to everyone's needs. The location was centered so that we could easily drive into downtown San Francisco, Sausalito, Point Bonitas and the Muir Woods. Mill Vally also has a very cute town that was fun to walk around a visit the shops. Susan was wonderful to work with and very responsive to any questions or concerns we had. We have added this to our favorites and look forward to staying again on the future!

Map

The home is unique in that it is surrounded by Redwoods yet has all day south facing sun. It is incredibly quiet and peaceful, with a private pool and wonderful views. Situated at the base of Mt. Tam, you can hike and then sun by the pool. Restaurants and shopping in Mill Valley are first class. Or, you can go on sightseeing adventures to Muir Woods, Stinson Beach or Napa. This is a fantastic vacation home or weekend get-a-way. (There is also a trampoline for the kids). Mill Valley offers several day camps for the kids so the entire family can enjoy a real summer vacation.

The home is situated on a peaceful canyon. Out of respect for my neighbors right to enjoy that peace, I agreed to impose a 10 pm rule. Guests need to plan their outside times on decks, in the spa and by the pool, to be inside by 10 p.m. Violations of this rule can result in forfeiting of the damage deposit. If there is any damage, in addition to outside noise after 10 p.m., guests will be billed.

Also note that the maximum allowed is 11 guests. Over that is by owner prior agreement and at a $20/person/night over the 11 max.

PLEASE NOTE RE RATE QUOTES: The VRBO website does not have the capacity to accurately reflect my rates. To accommodate large and small gatherings, I provide flexibility with how I quote the home. This way smaller groups do not have to pay the same rate as larger groups. The website accurately reflects that I charge $150/night extra for each of the 4th and 5th bedrooms and cottage if needed, but it cannot bill that accurately. This is why the website may give one quote and I another. I will always itemize my quotes which you can check against the details listed in the rate section of the website. So sorry for an confusion, it is out of my control
