The Casco Bay Cottage: The location of the Caso Bay Cottage in West Point makes an ideal “home base” for any vacation you choose. For those who “need to get away from it all” you can spend your entire vacation in West Point. Guests can lazily relax on our decks overlooking the ocean, or perhaps take a short stroll to Cat Cove for swimming and shell collecting. Cat Cove is a great location to launch your kayaks for a day of exploring nearby harbors and islands. A short trail through the piney woods leads to a secluded rocky area that is fun to explore. Among the rocks are tide pools where some of the locals learned to swim. Look for sea creatures that are trapped in the pools! Bring your fishing poles for an early morning of fishing. The rocks are a good place to cast your line in. Be sure to keep a look out for eagles, loons, cormorants and seals! A Maine vacation must is fresh seafood for a lobster or clam bake. You can take a leisurely stroll down to the local lobster pound for the fresh catch of the day.

History: For those of you who enjoy more history and more activity, West Point and its surrounding areas provide just that. West Point is one of the oldest and scenic fishing villages in Maine. Many of the locals are descendants of the original fishermen who settled here. Close to West Point is historic Popham. Popham is one of the earliest English settlements during Colonial America being settled in 1607. Though it was unsuccessful it led to later settlement along the Maine coast. Popham State Beach is a beautiful 500 acre beach of white sand. It is definitely worth a visit. When the tide is out, you can walk across the beach to a nearby island. Fort Popham, from the Civil War years is close by and is ready to be explored.

The nearest city to West Point is Bath, “the City of Ships”. Maine’s first ships were built here in this area around 1607-1608. If you are interested in shipbuilding the Maritime Museum offers a glimpse into Maine’s boat building past.

Shopping and exploring: Quaint shops and restaurants make Bath a fun day trip. Boat rentals can be found in Bath for touring or fishing the Kennebec River. Golf courses are also in the area. To the north of Bath is Boothbay Harbor. It is another excellent day trip for vacationers! It has shops, restaurants and antiques. Whale watching, Puffin watching and lighthouse boating excursions are available at the wharf. Brunswick, another historic town nearby offers shopping, restaurants, Bowdoin College and the Joshua L. Chamberlain Museum. L.L.Bean’s flagship store is located south in Freeport. It is opened 24 hours a day and is a good place to go on rainy days. Freeport also has many name brand outlets. Portland is about an hour away and has many historic sites, shopping and great restaurants as well.

After many request we now offer sea kayak rentals on site for exploring the coast and harbors. Both singles and tandems.

Casco Bay Cottage

  • 5 of 5

The house was just the right size for our family. The view from the deck was so pretty and the surrounding areas are so pretty. The mosquitoes, black flies, and spiders were horrible. But that is to be expected. Thank you for sharing with us.

Typical Maine Cottage in a charming fishing village

  • 4 of 5

Great stay, great location. Rooms are small, stairs to the upstairs are very steep. One of the lightbulbs were out in the main upstairs hallway. Gas stove less than desiderable, more of a fan of gas for cooking. Charcoal grill painful to cook on but does the job. Says it sleeps 10 but that is very tight, most people need their space if traveling with two families with lots of kids. Rented kayaks and had trouble finding the equipment (life jackets) which was across the road in a small shed. Overall great value for your money.

Beautiful and peaceful

  • 5 of 5

The house was beautiful and roomy, plenty of space for my family during our reunion, and very clean and well maintained. We especially enjoyed walking down to Cat Cove and climbing on the rocks, and sitting next to the outdoor fire pit in the evening. The property manager, who lives right across the street, was very friendly and helpful, and we experienced no problems while we were there. Would highly recommend for families looking for a peaceful retreat on the water.

Charming cottage, even on a rainy off-season weekend

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Casco Bay Cottage during our high school student's college visits to Bowdoin and Bates. Our host's directions and suggestions were a big help, and he was accommodating to our request for a later checkout time. (I'm sure he can't do that during the high season.) The cottage is extremely comfortable and well kept. We slept soundly in cozy beds, listening to the sea winds. We were a small clan, but I could imagine a big meal with family and friends, inside at the long table or outdoors on the spacious deck. The stairs to the second floor are a little steep, but that goes with the territory in a century-old place. The house is in the West Point historic fishing village, near Popham Fort and two lighthouses. It's a short drive to Bath, where we enjoyed the Maine Maritime Museum, historic homes and shipbuilding in action. We can't urge visitors strongly enough to find a way to have breakfast at the Winnegance General Store on Route 209, just beyond the bridge before you reach Bath. They leverage lobster and other fresh seafood without leaving the joys of eggs, bacon and pancakes behind. Scrumptious. We got fresh-baked cupcakes for the long drive home. And hearing the local chatter is fully entertaining. (A fallen tree just next door had cut out power in the region Saturday night to Sunday morning.) Back at the cottage, we longed to park ourselves on the lovely upper level porch that has views of ocean on three sides, but, alas, it rained the first two days and was very windy the Sunday we left. So, we'll just have to return for a warm weather getaway, if that's in the cards, and get our scenic deck time in then. I'm sure Casco Bay Cottage and the wonderful Maine culture will be calling to us to get back there for a longer stay.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review, I am sorry the weather didn't cooperate for you. But I am glad you all had a good time despite the weather. Neat thing about those stairs, there use to be a hatch /door going upstairs. In the early years they use to keep it closed during the winter to keep the living area warm during the day. When we remodeled the house and opened up all of the walls and there was no insulation except for some newspaper lining the outside walls. I can't imagine how cold it must have been. I don't know if you saw an elderly lady walking around the point (she is in her 90s), well she use to live in the Casco Bay Cottage as a little girl and she told us the story about the hatch going upstairs. I hope you all can come back again soon and look really close as you go down the stairs you can still see where the hatch closed and sealed. Thanks Again for the review and we hope to have you all back again soon.
